2017 MKZ 3.0TT AWD squeaking

Hi bbf2530. I got the can of spray, but it has been pretty cold here so I haven't go that done yet. However, I was by a Lincoln body shop and stopped in and asked them about the noise and our theory on the sail panel noise. He checked it out and didn't think it was from there. He then checked around and found that the rear of the rocker panel seemed loose. He found that a push/pull pin was missing. It is an odd square looking pin, not like one you would expect. Fortunately, they had one in the shop and he put it on for me. I am not sure if this was my problem, but it couldn't hurt. Time will tell, and mine seems to pop up  in certain times. I attached a pic for reference. You might want to see if your is missing too. He had no idea why it was missing.

HI Scott. Thanks for the information. You did describe your noise as more of a vibration/rattle, as opposed to my creaking noise, so that may make sense.

It is hard for me to get an idea of the perspective of the photo. It does look like the pinch weld in the photo has some damage. Also looks like the painted area to the left of the pinch weld damage is slightly scratched. Almost like a jack or something similar was used in the wrong spot .Perhaps whatever caused the pinch weld damage also knocked loose the push-pin? Or maybe not. Just a wild Internet guess.

Just to save others from reading the entire thread to find out what we are talking about: In my case, the right rear door, window frame piece being the source of the noise (a creaking noise, in my case) was not a theory. It was the actual culprit.

My car was bank vault solid and quiet for 6 months, then when the weather began to turn cold, it developed an annoying and sometimes quite present creak/sound from the right rear door/headliner area. I lived with it for awhile, hoping it would go away.  It did not. Brought my car in for it's first oil change and the creak, in April of 2019. At that time, my Lincoln Dealer's Body Shop diagnosed it as the rear window frame, plastic exterior trim piece and replaced it. Sound was gone for ~3-4 months, then returned. About 3 1/2 months ago I sprayed that area with a Dry Teflon Lubricant spray (along with the window trim of the other three doors, for good measure). My noise instantly went away and has not returned for 3 1/2 months so far.  For anyone with a similar issue, read back in the thread for more information, where I sprayed, how, etc.

I hope the push pin is the cause of your noise. Then it will be problem solved and you won't need to worry about spraying the window trim areas.

Please continue to keep us updated and good luck.

HI gang. Just an update on the fix for my particular creak/squeak problem, for those who may be interested: My last update was 2/6. As of today, the right rear door frame trim is still creak/squeak free. So it looks as though the dry teflon spray is a good solution for those who had the same issue as my car. My how-to is on the first page of this thread.

Good luck.

I have forgotten to update my situation.

Approximately a month ago, I started cleaning my weatherstrips with a plain damp microfiber cloth. When I drove the car the following day, both rear doors started squeaking the same manner as what I originally described. Upon closer investigation, the plastic trim was actually rubbing with the weatherstripping and the cleaning I did the day before, I suppose, induced more friction between the plastic and the rubber. I have a Leather/Vinyl/Rubber conditioner which I initially bought for the purpose of cleaning the leather seats of my vehicles. I applied it to the w-strips - just like that, squeaking is gone. I'm hoping that was it.

@bbf2530 @kramf411

Thanks for the precision on this topic and the specifics of the noise you heard, as it helped me diagnose & conclude my noise was coming from the same plastic part on the rear doors of my '19. It was a simple fix with the teflon spray, just applied it to the contact area where that piece meets the metal frame of each passenger door. I could tell immediately by pushing on the piece, as the sound was gone. A quick test drive confirmed it. Completely silent.

This had been become a real irritant, as I enjoy this car because it is so quiet and I don't always have on music.

Again, a big thank you for sharing all this info.

Hi ajs. I am happy to hear it also solved your noise issue, and you are very welcome! And thank you for posting back to let us know it helped you, since that information may help others in the future.

And as an update. My car is still squeak/creak free after all this time, without any further Teflon spray applications.

Hope you can now enjoy your super quiet MKZ as much as I do mine, and good luck.

Hi gang. Another update on the right rear door frame trim/squeak issue a few of us encountered: It is now approximately a year after I used the dry Teflon spray on the trim pieces in question, and the squeak/creak is still gone. So the dry teflon spray has turned out to be a simple and viable long-term solution.

As I had previously mentioned, I will just add treating this area with the Teflon spray to my usual winter preparations of lubricating the door/trunk seals with silicone gel rubber lubricant etc.

If anyone has this squeak/creak issue, just take a look at my detailed explanation above as to where and how to apply the spray.

Good luck.

I just picked up a 2018 3.0T with 20,000 miles on it and I think I may be having this problem as well. There is no TSB for this issue and the more people that have the problem and bring the car in for service for the problem the better. Lincoln may redesign the part or at the very least issue a TSB for the problem and a way to fix it. My wife has the vehicle and when she gets home if the problem is still occurring I will get a video/audio recording of the sound and where it is located while it is making the sound. This will be proof to the dealership so i don't get the "can't reproduce" answer from them. Then I will push on the panel and see if that stops it again videoing me doing that to prove that it stops the sound.

I am then going to direct them to look at this forum thread so they will know it is not an isolated incident and perhaps they will fix it without having to spray lubricant as part of a yearly ritual.

H kg. If the cause of the squeak you are experiencing is the same as the one I described in the second post of this thread (the right rear passenger door, rearward exterior pillar trim), and cured with a dry Teflon spray, there will be no redesigned part and no TSB in the future. Unfortunately it just does not work that way.

Yes, I would recommend bringing your car in for service if it is still under warranty. Your car's squeak may even have a different cause, which they can hopefully diagnose and repair. But if the issue with your car is the same as mine, and a Dealer visit does not help, then save yourself a lot of grief and use the cure I detailed. It will not be a "yearly ritual", as I did it once, now almost two years ago, and my car is solid and silent as a bank vault. And the squeak/creak never returned.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

While I did check for that squeak and I do have it, it is not the sound that is occurring. When I spoke to my wife on the phone she called it a squeak and it turn out it is a weee bit more then a squeak. I posted a thread and there is a video clip so you can hear it.

Hi kg. I watched and listened to the video you posted in your other thread (and replied). Considering the number of issues your cars seem to suddenly have when your wife drives them, perhaps driving lessons may save you a lot of money in the long run? ?

Keep us updated and good luck.

Don't get me started on that subject. The first words out of my mouth were "what did you hit this time". I swear she tries to run over as many pot holes as she can. The 2010 MKS we have we got when it had 50,000  on the clock. It was 3 years old so it was mostly highway driving. That car treated us well even with all of the crap my wife ran over with it that is why we decided to get another Lincoln. picked that guy up for 15,000.00 8 years ago and was worth every penny.  I told the wife we needed a new car because the MKS was getting up there in age and I wanted her to have a vehicle that was a lower chance of dying on her. The real reason why is because she rear ended an SUV with my winter beater (93 Subaru Legacy). she claims she was going less then 40 but you don't get 25 foot skid marks from 40mph. Needed to get something that would stomp on the brakes for her if needs be.

I just took a quick peek at the dust shield on the brakes. It is really close on the top and has a much larger gap on the bottom but it doesn't look like it was hitting. hard to tell without pulling the tire. I drove it and couldn't get it to make the sound. There are only 2 things that I know of that would make a sound similiar to that. one is the dust shield and the other is a power steering pump, tho I have only heard mechanical ones go bad and the sound has a lower tone to it, maybe the electric ones have a higher tone. IDK.

I will pull the tire out in the morning and take a peek at the back of the rotor on the drivers side. It could have been a rock that found it's way between the shield and the rotor. I am going to check the rotor for scoring.
