Moonroof Leaking...Normal?

Recommended Posts

I have less than 1K miles on a new 2019 MKZh.  By chance, from the driver's seat, I looked up at the right rear corner of the closed moonroof while it was raining outside.  I saw a small droplet of water coming in every once in a while.  I went the the dealer and they closely inspected the moonroof's seal condition and glass position and told me there's absolutely nothing wrong.  They stated that the moonroof has four drain hoses and four troughs to catch any water that gets through the seal.  They told me the roof never fully seals 100% and not to worry.  I have the repair manual and indeed there are four drain hoses and four troughs.  And I can't see anything wrong with the seal.  The moonroof seems adjusted properly, the front glass is pretty much even with the roof-line if not ever so slightly lower and the rear glass sits about 0.5mm above the rear roof line, all as per the service manual.  So maybe the dealership is correct.  No water actually dripped into the cabin, the trough's did their job.  However, it is still a bit unnerving.

Does your MKZ moonroof's leak?  Before you say no way, you might not be looking for it.  If you're out in the rain one day (or a car wash) please open the sunshade and take a look or run your finger or a tissue inside the black troughs to check for water.  I'd be curious to hear any feedback as to whether water was present, or not.  Thanks.

Shouldn't be leaking this early your cars life cycle. More proof of Fords recent poor quality control.

Watch this video of our cars being made at MKZ Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly Plant. About 2:47 minutes into the video, you'll see them leak inspecting the MKZ.

You might be able to simply armor-all the rubber seal around the moon roof to get it to seal better. Wipe down the paint surface around the parameter too. Perhaps it's dusty, dirty or just dry. Dealer prep doubtfully cleaned that area.

@TomV Thanks, I did lube the seal with weatherstrip lubricant (dielectric grease) and cleaned the paint surface after the dealer said all was good.  It did help a bit.  Actually, whenever I buy a car I lube all the weatherstrip in an attempt to ward off squeaks!

@R2D2 When you go through the car wash with the sun shade open, you won't see a drop unless you looking for it.  The drips are in the quite hidden unless you're looking for them.

Well I guess the bright side is that it really only leaks when it rains or I wash the car. ?  I get drips coming in that exit via the rain gutters that surround the roof, mainly at both rear corners.  Nothing ever drips into the passenger compartment.  I don't like it but as far as I can tell, the roof is aligned properly as per the service manual and other new MKZs on the lot.  Dealer says it is normal and why they have the rain gutters and four drain tubes.  Not really sure what if anything else I can do except keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get worse, that and perhaps get them to look at it again before the four year warranty expires.
