NEW SYNC3 NAV map update!

Hi gang. There is now a new map update for SYNC3. WoooHooo! It is available here, from the Lincoln/ALOM Technologies site for Lincoln vehicles equipped with SYNC3: https://syncnavigation.com/lincoln/home/

Once I input my vehicle information, the site states the NAV map update is complementary for 2018-2019 MKZ's (not sure about 2017 MKZ's).  There is no charge for the update for 2018-2019 vehicles, if you download the files yourself onto your computer and create your own USB drive to perform the NAV update. Or you can opt to have them mail you a USB drive containing the files, for a $40 fee. I opted to download for free.

It is a large file, >13Gb so it is downloading onto my computer as I write this. After that, you unzip and transfer the files to a USB drive in a manner similar to a regular SYNC update, for those who are familiar with that process. They provide detailed downloadable instructions.

The instructions also state to plan on a 1 hour install, during which time the car/engine must be kept running, so I will install it tomorrow during a 2 1/2 drive I have to Penn State.

I will post back tomorrow night or Sunday and let everyone know how the install went on tomorrows drive.

You will need your VIN# and  "SYNC ESN Serial Number". To get your SYNC ESN serial number, go to "Settings" on your SYNC screen. Then scroll down the screen and click on "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom of the next screen to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)", which is listed first. You will understand why I gave those instructions when you go to the website and look at your SYNC settings screen.

FYI: My current NAV Map file in my 2018 MKZ is "NA 1 16". I am assuming the update will be "NA 1 17"? I will post back with that information too.

EDIT - Ira states below that it updates to "NA 1 18". Even better!  I will update on that tomorrow or Sunday after my install.

Good luck.

I have a 2017 mkz hybrid so I entered my vin and esn  and was informed that for downloading the mapupdate  the cost would be $109 and $149 if you want to receive usb via mail. I opted for the download which consisted of a zip file, a license file and the instructions on how to use the files. A USB formatted in EXFAT and at least 32GB. After d/l zip file extract to usb and name the label SyncMyRide. Also extract the other two files to usb and make sure you insert the license file into SyncMyRide.

Installation will take about 1hr and after 30minutes the first part was done and one was told to leave the usb in car still connected and the system rebooted . About an 30 minutes later the second part was done would take effect next time you start the car.  Map went from 116 to 118.

One beneficial thing that came out of this for me which I hadn't had for a while was when you clicked on steering wheel and said NAVIGATION, she would come back and say "SORRY I DON'T UNDERSTAND"  GOT THAT BACK AGAIN, But i'm sure there will be limitations while driving.

Hi gang. Here is my SYNC 3, NAV maps install update. ?

The install went smoothly. First however, a few things to mention. In my initial post above, I left out one step on how to find your "SYNC ESN Serial Number" on the SYNC settings screen. Click on the gear icon/Settings button on your SYNC  screen. Then click "General" (forgot that step earlier). Scroll down and click "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom of the next screen to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)".

Okay, to the install. Just a few things to mention/warn about. My  install began as the instructions detailed. So I settled in for my 2 1/2  hour drive, expecting the installation to take about an hour, as per the instructions. However, after about 5 minutes, the Installation Complete screen popped up for about 10 seconds stating that the install had been successful, I could remove the USB and the update would be complete once I performed a restart cycle of the  car (as per the instructions). However, it disappeared before I could click "Okay".

I felt that was far too quick, so I left the USB in, kept driving and did not turn off the car. Then after a few minutes, SYNC rebooted and showed it was still performing System Updates. It would reboot occasionally. Show information screens, etc. About 30 minutes into the drive, the same thing happened. Stated install was complete, remove the USB, stop and restart the car etc., but once again the screen disappeared after ~10 seconds, before I could click "Okay".

I still felt that was too quick, so I left the USB in and kept driving.  Same result, reboot, and System Updating began again. Occasional  reboots, Information screens etc.

At about the 1 hour mark, the System Update successful screen popped up again, stating the install would be completed once I performed an  engine stop and restart. I kept driving for several minutes, and this time the screen stayed visible and did not disappear. So this time, i was able to click "Okay".

I then pulled over and performed the required restart cycle of...engine/ignition off (I also opened my door to turn off Accessory  power), wait at least 15 seconds (I waited a minute), then restart.

After restarting, I went into SYNC settings to check my NAV maps  version. It was successfully updated from version "NA 1 16" to "NA 1 18". WoooHooo!

So if there  is a moral to this story, I guess it would be: Despite some early/false Install Complete screens, the install does seem to take ~1 hour. So don't rush it, be patient, and ensure the install is actually complete.

Hope this information helps and good luck. ?

I'll admit I'm minorly irritated that my 2017 MKZ, still under factory warranty AND freshly purchased as certified preowned, isn't eligible for a free update.

Hi N0P0WER. I agree. My personal opinion is...any SYNC 3 equipped vehicle still within the Bumper to Bumper Warranty period should get free, downloadable NAV map updates for manual installation.  If they want to charge for Dealer installation, that is acceptable, as long as the free manual download/update option for the vehicle owner is available.

I'm wondering if I can create enough of a stink on social media regarding this...

Do we know the reason for this?  IIRC, they 2018+ have more memory, but why should that matter?

In my own case,  my lease is up in 6 months. I'm certainly not going to spend $150 for the update so the next owner can benefit.  If I get a 2020 MKZ, it'll have the latest update.?

Hi Art. I know of no reason for an arbitrary 2018 model year cutoff, other than it being a random corporate decision. And in my opinion, a foolish one at that. As you stated, early unit SYNC 3 memory limitations can not be the issue, since they are happy to sell it to 2017 owners for $109/$149.

Since SYNC 3 was only introduced for the 2017 model year, Lincoln could have made for happy customers and good will by simply including the 2017 models still within the Bumper to Bumper Warranty.   ?

My brand-new2017 was delivered with badly out of date maps, and they want $109 to update them now? Sounds like a Ford bean-counter decision.

When I entered my info on the site it said I needed to call a number to order.

Hi MKZMark.  Did it give an error code? If yes, you may have made the common mistake of entering your MKZ 's "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)" instead of the required "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)".  You need to scroll down further in your SYNC settings to get the "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)".

Just a thought on what may have happened and why it is requiring you to call. Good luck.

EDIT - N0P0WER beat me to it. Thanks for helping, N0P0WER.?

I would too, though sometimes I don't want to use Android Auto and my entire neighborhood is missing from the Lincoln's map, which is just irritating.

I got a vent-mount magnetic cell phone holder which I put on the left side. Works great and lets me stay in Sync instead of AA.

Can someone with the new map update see if I-95 turns right onto the PA turnpike, I-276, near Bristol, PA, then crosses onto the Jersey Turnpike? This was a change in the last several months.

Hi MKZ. The release notes for the latest SYNC 3 NAV map version (NA 1 18) state that it incorporates updates through 1st quarter 2018. So if that roadway just changed in the last several months, it will probably not be on the latest map update.

I would hope that it included it based in the planned opening date of the new interchange. That's a major miss if it's not there.

Hi MKZ. I can not swear it is not included in the newest update (NA 1 18), at least not until I have a need to drive through that area to see the actual route.  I am only hypothesizing that it would probably not be there, due to when the new interchange was opened versus what the release notes state.

If you get a chance please just scroll over there with your finger - thanks!

That's pretty lame that the latest update doesn't know where frickin' I-95 is.

Hi MKZ. Just curious, since I don't drive that route.  Referring to the actual roads: Was there really no entries/exits connecting those two major highways for all these years previously?

Correct. I-95 and the turnpike did not intersect until recently. 95 used to continue north to the river at Yardley PA. Compare the image below to what's in the Lincoln nav.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi fusionff. Found this in a quick google search: "INSTL_ERR14 - Error is ACTIVATION_PENDING_ERROR"

So I am only wild-guessing here: Did you properly place the tiny authentication code file into the large SYNC update file on your USB when you downloaded them? Seems as though it may not be authenticating.

Again, only a wild guess. Let us know how you make out and good luck.
