Car Has Developed a Vibration/Shake at Certain Speeds

I dropped off my car at the dealer this morning, 10-10-17.

 

They took seriously my complaint of "vibration, shimmy at 45 MPH". They gave me a loaner which is a 2016 MKX. They anticipate that it may take more than one day to correct.

 

If I were a SUV person I would probably have a MKX. It is nicely appointed and rides very nice.

I will keep adding information as it occurs.

 

Got a call from the dealer today (10-11-17). He wanted me to come in and go on a road test with the mechanic.

 

The mechanic told me that he had replaced a bearing (can't remember where) and wanted to determine if the problem still exists, before he returned it to me. I drove and we got on Interstate 87. Right on Que at 45 MPH the problem became evident. He could feel if just like I could. He also had me accelerate to see at what speed it stopped. He said now he has a good idea of what to correct. He told me it may take another couple of days. Since I have a loaner and this is being done under the warranty I told him that's just fine. :)

I received a call from the Service Writer today (10-16-2017). He advised that the technician was still working on my car. He expects it to take a few more days for completion.

 

The reason I'm posting these "progress reports" is to demonstrate that there are good dealers out there who do the right thing. This should embolden you to demand good treatment from your dealership.

 

My dealer sells and services Lincoln, Ford, Mazda and Subaru. It is a large dealership, but still takes the time to provide "personal" one-on-one service.

I received a call from the Service Writer today (10-17-2017). He advised that my car was ready for pickup. Picked up the car and checked it out on the way home. The problem is no more.

 

The write up on the repair order was "Customer states check for vibration felt in driver seat when driving at 45 MPH without brakes applied. Customer indicated front wheel balance is OK. If necessary balance wheels."

 

They replaced the R/F wheel hub bearing - Part # DG9Z*1104*E - Hub Asy Wheel x 2

 

Replaced the Power Takeoff Unit - Part # DT4Z*7251*G - Power Take Off Asy

 

Parts cost $941.09. My cost along with the use of a 2016 MKX loaner and car wash was $0.00.

 

Just for your information my car is a 2014 MKz AWD with the 3.7L 300HP engine. Elapsed time for repair 5 working days.

This is the final update. I was mistaken above in that the problem had not been resolved. I took it back to the dealer.

 

This time they replaced the drive shaft. Part # DP5Z-4R602-A, Shaft Asy - Drive, It shows the cost as $404.46.

 

This time the problem was really corrected.

 

Again, all of this was covered under my warranty at no cost to me. I was also provided with a 2017 Lincoln MKX loaner. It only had 134 miles on it. :)

Thanks for the update, Joe.  I'm surprised that they warranteed all those parts it they were damaged by a pothole, but who's to argue? ;)

 

 

 

While I admire the dealer's persistence in solving the problem, I am not impressed that they continued to throw parts at it which it likely didn't need.  Not sure why they couldn't have diagnosed the driveshaft issue to begin with.  

Happens all the time.  I complained about a brief vibration at 40mph/1500rpm in my 2010 MKZ AWD.  At the behest of Ford Engineering, they replaced the torque converter, rear differential and TCM and then finally decided that it was an inherent condition with this driveline configuration.  It was caused by the rear diff disengaging and the TC locking up at the same time.  They said they would work on a recalibration but it would have to be approved by the EPA.  I'm still waiting, 7 years and 4 cars later. :lol: Turns out, they all do it to some degree. My 2012 and 2014 did it and even this 2017 occasionally does it.  There's a thread on it on the Ford Fusion Forum.  It's gotten less noticeable with each successive model, so I guess they have tried to mitigate it.

Artie when I had the pot hole encounter I went to the dealer, driving on the temporary spare. So, they saw how the tire had been destroyed.

 

I told them to check everything to determine if there was any other damage. They did and said that everything looked good.

 

Later on when I developed the problem with the shimmy and vibration these issues were not connected to the pot hole.

Today I heard a noticeable "humming" sound, although no vibration, at exactly 64 mph. It wasn't there at either 63 or 65! I simply avoided going 64 to solve the problem but I tried it several times and the results were consistent, :headscratch:

Hey guys, 

 

First post here. Want to add to this thread since it just happened to me this morning. 

 

I have a 2013 MKZ 3.7 AWD with 68K miles. 

 

Started the first 10 minutes of a 5 hour road trip with the 'shimmy' occurring around 50-60mph down the highway. It almost feels like the back end of the car is sliding around and all 3 other passengers felt the same thing in the car. It got to the point of us pulling off on the first exit and making sure all the tires were intact and visually inspecting the underside to see if there was anything hanging. It happened again for the next 10-20 miles doing 60mph on a 75mph road. It finally went away about 20-30 minutes later and it never came back after driving the remainder of the trip. 

 

I purchased the car used about 4 months ago and this never occurred up until this morning. I did recently have a tire rotation within the past few weeks. 

 

It just seems odd having this shimmy occur early and never coming back again. I worry about taking it in and having the dealership not find anything. I see the rear driveshaft is something to be looked at per this thread. 

 

Just thought I would add my experience and I will post further updates if anything else comes up.

I would check you air pressure in the tires when the tires are cold., it almost sound like it was low but once the tires heated up from use the pressure rose and smoothed out the ride.

Another possibility (considering where you are located) would be a chunk of snow or ice temporarily affixed to a tire causing an unbalance and shimmy. It finally freed itself.

This is the final resolution to my problem with vibration at 45-55 mph.

A few times I had thought they had corrected the problem. However, after a few days it became clear that it was still there. I had made two additional visits to my dealer after my last update here.

Eventually the dealer had to contact the Lincoln Mother Company for technical assistance. They had my car for about a month in that mode. During that period they changed additional parts without success. Finally they told me they needed another part. This part was on back order. I picked up my car with the promise they would let me know when the part came in.

After almost  month the part was received. I brought my car in and they had it for three days. When I picked up the car the problem was actually fixed. I waited about two weeks before I posted this message.

The final part that really fixed it was:

I've devoured this post, because my 2010 AWD has a vibration I can't feel, but I can see and hear it.

Let me explain- at certain speeds (normally low speeds, say below 40 MPH) I can see the rearview mirror vibrate, and the leather on the passenger's side seat bouncing a little. Like I said, I can't feel anything, but something is rattling that mirror and seat. This happens no matter what type of surface I'm on. And the there's a sort of buzzy, whirring sound, like an old heater blower motor, coming from somewhere when I accelerate or decelerate. That is a more intermittent problem and I haven't noticed it at any certain type of speed. It's just loud enough to be annoying sometimes. The sound seems to come from the center of the car, under the floor. I'm thinking I might have the driveshaft issue, but I'm going to wait until I get the tires rotated before I proceed any further, just in case.
