CAPofMD Posted August 21, 2017 Share Posted August 21, 2017 (edited) Just got back from round trip from Baltimore area to Acadia Nat'l Park in Maine.... trip meter says total round trip was 43.5MPG ! Much better than the 2012 VW Passat Diesel I turned in for this 2015 Z Hybrid!!! After logging all the fill-up in FUELLY, they computed it to 42.2 overall.....guess Lincoln's trip meter needed to make it look a little better. I still ain't complaining!!! CAPofMD Posted August 24, 2017 Share Posted August 24, 2017 Recent trip to Maine from Maryland.... cars trip mileage says overall was 43.5 but hand calculation says a little over 42.... was getting well over 500 miles per tank. I was lucky...guess the downhills were longer than the uphills! I did kick off the cruise when going downhill so it wouldn't use the engine for braking.. However, there are those who drive some extraordinary miles per year as part of there daily travels such as that of Myron Brown, who has posted 13,000 miles during the first (6 mos.) of ownership. Sounds like 26-30,000 miles annually. Lots of driving there! I would be very much surprised to ever attain the mpg numbers you have posted. The interstate speed limit here in Fl. specifically on the (I-75) corridor is 70mph, and pretty difficult to move along much under that speed during peak hrs. regardless of driving lane used, which doesn't necessarily produce the best fuel economy, as I'm sure you and others are well aware. : ) Although I've chosen to go green, I would say my driving style doesn't exactly reflect one who is hell bent on maximizing fuel efficiency, if you know what I mean. In addition I now only have about 2000 miles on the odometer and the motor and other assemblies are probably still breaking in to some degree. I'm sure I'll see some additional mpg as things loosen up, incl my foot off the gas. Drove from home (S of Baltimore) to upstate NY, then drove rest of way the next day. Was surprised that going north I had better fuel usage than coming back south. 1steven Posted September 13, 2017 Share Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) True,work with the technology,as with the 2016 mkzh,anything 75mph and up exclusively uses gas engine only,so keep cruise control 74 or below. Also,sometimes tweeking cruise control down a mile or two engages hybrid mode,then tweek back up on downhills,those ev miles will add up! Our MKZ is a 2015 2.0T, but we've just started leasing a 2018 C-Max and Fuelly is popular app on their forum. My wife is averaging 50.2mpg in her first month of 45-mile commutes, plus a long expressway trip at 70+mph and local excursions (the C-Max). I assume her drive cycle would return good numbers in an MKZH as well. We're loving the feedback and coaching screens. Last fall I was mildly curious about the MKZH, but the C-Max has really won us over. One thing we've learned is the EPA mileage number is not relevant if you drive different terrain, climates, or speeds than what's assumed in the EPA test cycle. We're enjoying above-average MPG's now in nice weather, in mostly-flat Illinois, but are realistic that road trips back east, or running the HVAC will return lower numbers. When our 3-year lease expires we hope Ford is still offering hybrid vehicles (that we want). Our lease decision assumes that technology will advance in the future. When not highway driving I can get almost 50 mpg. I don't use the speedometer, I use the gauges and try to stay in the blue. But on the highways, if everyone else is doing 80-85, who am I to try not to keep up. Sooner I get to where I'm going, the better. For everyone. My lifetime average is 37.9 -38.1 variation (summer vs winter) with 65K on the clock, to me those higher reports are really just for a particular trip and not the same as lifetime average. reverendalc Posted December 8, 2018 Share Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) i've got a 2016 hybrid with the glass roof, which i'm sure weighs a bit more than your average Z... i purchased it 1162 miles away, and had a lot of time to experiment with MPG on the trip home. i smashed from CA to WA, averaging over 72mph, and there were a lot of mountain climbs. i parked it with 39.6 on the clock, and did a reset. it's true that if you hover in the low 60s, 41mpg is nearly effortless, even with cruise control on. i'm in outside sales, and the western half of washington is my territory, so i drive a lot. i did a day in bellingham, about 120mi out, and the commute is about 1hr in terrible traffic thru seattle, and then about 90min for speeds between 60-80mph. it's impossible to get good economy at 70+ speeds, as it just needs the ICE to hold that speed even on flat ground. i'm not hypermiling, just driving with a high mpg goal, and i'm constantly between 40.2 and 40.8mpg. in my experience, slow all electric launches aren't the way to go... they're infuriating for you and all drivers behind you, and they suck your battery dry... then the ICE is always running trying to recharge. i do quick launches up to speed or slightly over, then fall into EV mode to maintain. this way the battery gets a good charge on launch, a good charge on brake, and all of the little reminders tell me i'm doing a good job when i come to a stop. it's been excruciatingly cold this past week though, and between tons of remote starting and always having the heater on, i've been treading water ~40.3 and haven't seen my good friend 40.8 much recently. DeeCee Posted December 10, 2018 Share Posted December 10, 2018 I have driven my 2017 MKZ Hybrid for 42,900 miles since purchase in August 2016 and have kept a log of each fill-up over that time. My overall calculated MPG is 42.7. I have summarized my data in monthly increments with the best month being 45.0 actual MPG and the lowest 39.9. Most of my driving has been rural commuting about 18 miles each way on streets/highways with mostly 45 MPH speed limits. I do not try any hypermiling and usually just set the adaptive cruise to the applicable speed limit and let the car/computer do the "driving". I have the climate control set to Auto all the time so don't worry about nursing a few more tenths by not running the AC.These commute trips I drive provide excellent mileage stats with the best single tank fill-up being logged at 47.2 MPG. On occasions when I have taken trips on interstates with 70-75 MPH speed the mileage drops significantly with the lowest single tank fill-up being logged at 34.7 MPG. However, you can never compare your own MPG's/mileage to anyone else. Fuel economy is impacted by driving style, driving environment (types of roads, traffic patterns, highway driving versus stop and go driving, fuel types, ambient temperatures, etc etc), and that is just for starters. So we will never be happy if we compare to others. So yes, ask for tips and try to maximize your own MPG's, but don't go by what others quote, as they are not driving where and how you do, and you are not driving where and how they do. reverendalc Posted December 11, 2018 Share Posted December 11, 2018 i know that i put about 175 miles on my Z today. the wife was driving it over the weekend, and when i got in it was at 39.5mpg and i parked it at 40.3. i'd like to try fuelly or the like to get a second opinion... but i'm not sure i've got the discipline. i do have 7 flowers and a crap ton of leaves tho! What's weather like, cross-winds, hilly area in Seattle and temperature also might play factor. One time I got 39MPG average driving from Chicago to Dallas in last October with cold weather and cross winds during part of trip. Same trip in Summer got close to 42MPG with similar speeds.
