Hybrid MPG

I own  2016 mkz hybrid, brought brand new,always changed my oil since 30k miles and added tufoil,now 78k miles and with 8 round trips from NY to Florida/Georgia at speeds up to 75-ish (I'm  no slow poke!),using only 87 octane gas, Average TOTAL mpg at 42.0 mpg. My average mpg with my 2012 mkzh before I sold it with same driving pattern and oil changes was 38 mpg.......and I still enjoy and have fun driving my car and always trying to improve my mpgs!

Good to hear from fellow MKz owner doing long distances.  I just did Dallas-Atlanta-Pensacola-Atlanta-Dallas round trip on my 14 Mkz.  I averaged around 41.8MPG. 

I was hoping the 17 MKz or later will have improved technology that can provide 45+MPG. Love to hear from 17 or later MKz owner on it.

I had a 2013 MKZ Hybrid (traded in for a 2017 3.0T).  Beside improving the MPG, the software update also changed the maximum MPH where the electric engine would automatically disengage.  Before the update, the electric engine would automatically disengage at 62 MPH.  After the update, I believe it was raised to 85MPH.   So, if you can run on electric up to 85, you have the update.  FWIW, it has been a long time and this is all from memory - I am pretty sure it is correct - or I could be having a "Senior moment".  ?

How do i run only on electric to see what mph it disengages? Mine runs on whatever it decides is best

Out on the highway just accelerate from 60 to 70 and then let up on the gas pedal and the car should switch to electric if you have the software update installed.

I have had mine in electric while coasting at 70 mph down I-95... never thought there was a top end but it could be there ?

does anyone know how I can find out what software mine has? annnnnnd how I could get it installed if its an old version. Just did a highway run and can only get it to engage ev at 45mph max. I have a 2011 if that makes a difference

2011-2012 was a different technology.  2013 MKZ went to a different type of battery and technology.  If I remember correctly, the top EV speed in the 2011-2012 model was 47 MPH, so you are where you are supposed to be.  The software upgrade was specific to the 2013 MKZ (Fusion and C-MAX) - and only those made in a certain date range if I remember correctly.

Hi Chris.  Yes, just the very cold weather can drop your mpg's that much.  Add in rain, snow, possibly more use of the remote start, having the climate control set to "Auto" more often etc, can lower it even more.

I'm not a true believer in the fuel computer mpg.  (It's all over the place when compared to pencil and paper numbers.)  Temperatures are not really a consideration around here.  Our seasons are fire, flood, earthquake and drought.

I just did 217 miles in my 2016 and the computer said I did 40.4 mpg with 102.4 EV.  My hand held calculator divided 217 / 5.97 gallons and came up with 36.7 mpg.  That's about the same results that I got last fill up.  42.4 mpg on the computer and 39.8 mpg on hand held calculator.  The last 2700 miles worth of fill-ups have been similar. 

So I'm trying to figure out what these EV mpg's are all about.  If we subtract my 102 EV miles from the 217 mile and divide that by the 5.97 gallons the 2.0 engine got 18.9 mpg.  Using the same logic my last tank was 22.8 mpg for the 2.0. 

I'm canceling cruise control for the long down hills.  The engine seems to come on to maintain your selected speed.

I'm very happy with it but i do miss zero to 85 mph by the top of the freeway on ramp in my Mustang EB with 31mpg on the highway.

If you are using pencil and paper to track just the last tankful then you will be off. You need to track overall history to be truly accurate. Looking at your fill up gals vs the mileage from your last fill up mileage for an "instant" number is not an accurate method.

That’s great to know! I just picked up a super clean loaded (all options) 2013 MKZ Hybrid with 48k miles for a steal and I couldn’t be happier! I’m hoping it will last me a good 50k miles.

 

I’ve only driven about 200 miles on it, but so far, I get about 41-42mpg on longer, highway trips (no A/C) and closer to 36-38mpg if I do lots of stop and go.

 

I really do wonder sometimes how did Ford get EPA to rate this car at 45/45. It seems very unrealistic in real world usage. Granted, it’s winter now, but in Virginia it’s been somewhat mild.

It seems dealer may have updated the MKZh vehicle system programing as part of service.

Hi jm98. Not sure if I am correctly understanding what you meant when you stated "The MPGs are not changing every 500 or 1K miles for some reason", but I'll give it a shot: The MPG readout does not change "every 500 or 1K miles". It displays a running average of the previous ~500 miles and is constantly adjusting. Not a mass adjustment every 500-1,000 miles.

 

As far as why it has not been changing...Perhaps like many of us, you are not driving as much and whatever driving you do is returning consistent MPG's. Therefore, the average has remained constant. Just a guess.

 

Hope that makes sense. And if you think there is another issue, have your Service Department address it.
