My record short trip is 68mpg, and I have just reached 35mpg total distance after 592miles and 1 month of ownership (2012 model). I also have my first "bloom" as of 3 days ago. BuckyB Posted February 5, 2013 Share Posted February 5, 2013 My wife seems to be getting about 31.4 MPG on her 2012 MKZ Hybrid. She doesn't do anything in particular to maximize MPG's and in my opinion drives a bit agressively. It's mostly around town in the San Sernando Valley, so I guess you'd call it "Suburban" driving. Very little highway and very little true city. I tend to get better in my 2011 Nissan Altima Hybrid, usually around 33 MPG with the same mix of driving. I had expected the Lincoln to do better than the Nissan, but I guess that's par for the course lately with Ford's hybrids. Anyway, neither of us has anything to complain about. 2 great cars with great gas mileage. BTW, MPG's for both are as calculated by the cars' computers. There is a great discussion about this, with several guinea pigs offering up results as they get them, over on the Ford Fusion Hybrid forum . It's to early to tell ye,t but my first fill up since the upgrade gave me 2.3 better mpg. I have had it as high as 75 in the EV mode in cruise control. I will update you in another month. There is a break in period--mileage should increase after 4-5,000 miles. 2. Driving in the real world never matches the EPA estimates, but that's true for non-hybrids as well. 3. You can learn driving habits and techniques that will dramatically improve your mileage. For example: - Watch the left display in Empower mode, and practice trying to keep it in the blue more (not too much--keep your eyes on the road.) - Look ahead for opportunities to break gradually and get some regen--for example traffic lights ahead. - Listen for the gas engine. Learn to drive so that it doesn't rev as much. - Drive more constant speeds. - Use all the tools that Lincoln provides to help with mileage: EV+, Eco Cruise Control, Brake Coach, and all the display modes. In other words, you have to work the hybrid technology to get the benefits. The next morning it was 22 degrees and we went to Michigan and the temps went from a high of 22 to a low of 9 degrees with snow and an ice storm. Then to Ohio where the temps were a little warmer...then back to PA in 45-50 degree sunny weather. Mileage was mostly 65-70 MPH with some 75-80 MPH legs. The car was loaded with luggage and Christmas presents and we averaged 40.8 MPG for the trip. The car drove great and it was an extremely comfortable trip. In other words, you have to work the hybrid technology to get the benefits. I just completed a 1700+ trip and I tried something different. I experimented with eco-cruise. I found eco-cruise wasn't allowing the car to go into EV mode on slight down hills. I switched it off and hypermiled the car for stretches and went into EV much more. I also was able to stay in EV mode much longer going up hill. When I got tired I would go back to eco-cruise. I think this made a difference. srcolson Posted February 5, 2014 Share Posted February 5, 2014 I too have found that Eco Cruise reduces use of EV mode. As a new owner of a hybrid, I find myself experimenting with driving styles absolutely unfamiliar to me. Am a delusional in thinking that I get better fuel economy when over-accelerating to a higher than desired speed, taking my foot of the "gas" pedal, coasting and then only applying enough throttle to maintain my target speed? The sweet spot is 62 MPH. That is where the EPA number comes from... on a flat road... no headwind... perfect temp... you get the point. The highest I have achieved is 39 MPG on a 1200 mile cross country trip. I was happy to get that since my SportTrac gets 21 highway on a good day. :) And yes, going downhill at 75 the MKZh will enter EV mode, but will not stay there for long. I knew going in that the EPA numbers of 45/45 would be hard for me to get since I live in Texas... Uber Hot in the summer and freezing in the winter (was a high today of 19!). Using the A/C or Heat keeps the engine running more often, therefore cutting down the MPG. I wanted a car that looked good, had a classy and comfy interior, and got descent MPG. srcolson Posted February 7, 2014 Share Posted February 7, 2014 I find that commuting 50 miles one way, at 65 MPH, will give me 40 MPG. If I get aggressive, my mileage drops to 37 MPG. Driving in "Old Man Mode" for about 10 miles will help me get my fuel economy back to 39 to 40 MPG. Until the MKZ hybrid, I've never driven this slow.
