Can Lincoln Be Cool Again?

In the car business, Lincoln once stood as the pinnacle of luxury. Frank Sinatra drove a Lincoln. So did the Shah of Iran. In the U.S., the presidential limo was a Lincoln.

The brand peaked with the 1961 Lincoln Continental, a beautiful, innovative car that stood for style, individuality and sophistication.

Here's the thing about cars, they're either cool, or they're not.  A manufacturer can build a car, but they can't decide whether or not it's going to be considered 'cool'.  You can aim it at a certain target (let's go with sports sedan drivers), you can include certain features, and attributes, and even certain design cues, but in the end, it's going to be the press, and the consumers, who decide whetheror not something is cool.  The same actually goes for just about any type of product you can think of.  Apple didn't set out to make 'cool' products, they just designed based on what they thought people would like, and the cool factor came.

I think my Lincoln is cool.. I have posted a few times on this forum my last 4 cars going back 20-25 years were Mercedes S Class...Top of the line in German Luxury  in fact still own a  little 2 seat 92 500sl... Living in So Cal Mercedes,BMW,Audi and Lexus are everywhere... But I saw the MKZ and thought it was a cool car that you do not see that often... I have had more people stop and tell me what a great looking car I have since I decided to change to Lincoln and people were more amazed  with my 13 Hybrid... Hybrids are not meant  to be cool but the MKZ is...... So to ME Lincoln can be cool agian

The thing about cool cars is that they are that way without seemingly trying too hard. It should come natural because cool cars like cool people are not overly concerned with what others think. We who buy the MKZ  buy it because we  have taste and instinctively know style when we see it. We lead, others eventually follow. I know my MKZ is cool and that’s good enough for me.

You have just demonstrated exactly what Lincoln is shooting for.  Lincoln needs people to think its products are cool, and it seems to be slowly succeeding.  While not a fan, I am pulling for Lincoln to succeed.

Looks like Lincoln is doing something right.

I worked for Shelby for several years and one thing the Carroll Shelby said (in different quotes) is that a great car makes a name, but a name in itself can't make a great car. How true.

That's one distinguishing factor about the MKZh that rings true.

Carroll Shelby is way above 'cool' status.  He is legendary.  His cars are of iconic status.  I think the closest anyone got to Shelby was Don Yenko.

I'm not worried about being cool. I bought a Lincoln because "I just liked it".

:hysterical: Nice.

He was really cool in private as he was in public - just awesome to be around.  Yenko's daugther is on Facebook and she has a new Camaro. That brand could have been something really big too.

I'm not sure how I feel about the modern day Yenko revivals, but I know the original Yenko cars are highly collectible, with many trading for as much as, if not more than, some of Shelby's cars (of course, we're not comparing it to the Cobras, but check out trading prices of GT350s, vs the Yenko COPO cars).

I can only imagine what Carroll must have been like in person.  I don't think anyone will come close to him.
