2013 MKZ Hybrid battery going dead over night???

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I am a new owner of a 2013 MKZ Hybrid and I am stoked about the car. I however am concerned that the dealer has sold me a car with issues that they KNEW about. Let me start from the beginning.

Last Monday I went to the local dealer looking for a Fusion Hybrid. They had a beautiful '13 MKZ hybrid with 21k miles on it that was priced nicely and I decided it was the car for me. Upon entering the car for the test drive however, nothing turned on... The salesman said someone must have left the lights on or something and that he would boost it off. I thought that was odd because this thing is PACKED full of batteries, but he said it has a normal 12v battery to start everything and then the hybrid batteries just control the power to the electric engines. OK, I'll buy that, I am a Robotics engineer and I an very aware of how controls work, so it sounded reasonable. Well, the test drive went fine, and I asked if my wife could come by in a couple of hours and drive it and he said "sure".

So, upon my wife arriving at the dealership, the salesman said it would be a bit because he had his service guys driving the car to make sure the battery was charged well for us. (This was concerning for me to say the least) but I shook it off and said no problem. we signed the documents that night but I couldn't pick up the car until this past Friday as I had to withdraw funds from a stock market account to cover the down payment and it took three days for those funds to clear.

upon arriving Friday morning to get my new car, they had me wait for almost 2 hours while they "detailed" the car AND the salesman said he wanted his service manager just to make sure that the battery was fine. (never mentioning that there was any issues after the single time it didn't start on the test drive). I get the car finally, and it had not been detailed at all, yet two hours had passed, so I was a little worried about WHAT they were doing to the car during that time... well, now I know.

THIS MORNING, I went to drive the car, and...... NOTHING. It was dead again just like before the test drive!!! I had to jump my car off this morning, and then it started and drove just fine. Luckily it is all under warranty, BUT I am really upset that they covered this up and now I will have to send my new car in for service before 100 miles are on it.

Do any of you know what might be causing this? the 12v battery is getting 14.4v charge to it while the car is on, so it is not the charging system, so it is either something not turning off, or the battery is bad, but it does just fine after a boost gets everything going.

Thanks for your help!!!

Ford has admitted that a bad batch of batteries were installed in the early 2013 model cars. If I remember it was a Sept '13 build Motorcraft battery. My FFH went through two 12v batteries real fast. They replaced the original and the battery they replaced it with. There is also a TSB that is supposed to fix this issue. Check the Fusion Hybrid forms for it. There is a thread with all the TSBs.

Have 2011 MKZ purchased in 2012. Replaced battery after 2 years and 33000 miles. Assumed problem was car sat on lot for a year. Car is now 3 & 1/2 years and 52000 miles. I was suprised because batteries on my 2 Mercury Marquis lasted 5+ years each.

I have the same problem.   My 2013 has 11450 miles on it.  I go away on vacation for two or three weeks and come back the 12 volt battery is dead.   This is the second time it has happened.    Does Ford have a fix?

Do a search for this TSB: ASI-45124

Our MKZ Hybrid also was dead on the lot, brand new. Put it down to sitting too long, and after it was charged it was fine...until a couple weeks later when it was dead in the driveway. I jumped it in order to get the HVB started and the car charging, and it was fine. Two days later it was dead again. I jumped it again and drove it to the dealer.

They reprogrammed the power trunk control module as described in that TSB, and the problem never happened again since.

I just had the battery replaced on my 15... I have had the car 13 months 20,741miles.. I got an alert on my phone from the Lincoln mobile app.. did not think much of it for about a week.... that's when the car started to turn over slowly.. Went to the dealer and they changed out the battery.. they said that the system was ok .. It was the battery.. I have been driving for 40 years never had a bad battery...after reading some of these post .. I think Ford should find a new battery supplier

I just replaced the 12v battery on my '13 MKZh. This car is a very early 2013 build. I only have 32K miles on it, but I think it gave me pretty good service. Dealer put in the upgraded battery (higher cranking amps). I was starting to get the flickering electronic bugs and a new battery fixed it.

ITFlyer, thanks for the tip on TSB ASI-45124. I've had an intermittent problem with the trunklid bouncing back open.  Last Thursday the battery was completely dead. AAA came out and started the car, which I then drove for an hour to fully charge the battery. The next morning the car started fine, and later when I went to close the decklid it bounced back open. By the end of the day the battery was dead again. Took the car in this morning and told the service advisor about TSB ASI-45124. They won't be able to get to it until Monday, but I'll report back here what they find. By the way, my car is a 2015 with 56,000 miles. This is the first big problem I've had.

I believe I am having issue with the power trunk mechanism draining power from the 12V battery. Past two days my MKZh would not start. luckily it did after few tries but still has me worried. The car would always trigger "power saving mode" when shutting down the car.

Just wondering for those who fixed this issue, did your dealerships cover cost of repair TSB: ASI-45124 ?

My trunk module was replaced under warranty. However, even though it was defective, that is not what was causing my battery to go dead. It turns out that my 28 month old battery was defective. Battery was replaced, at my expense, and all has been well for the last year until today when my navigation system started acting up. It only works intermittently, and when it goes out i get a message that navigation SD card is bad. I got a new card about a year and a half ago, so don't know why I need to buy another one. Checking with the dealer tomorrow.

The cost of applying a TSB is covered under the original B2B warranty. The customer is responsible for the cost if the car is out of warranty.

What is the upgraded battery they put in ?

Wow its good your MKZh has been running smoothly since you replaced the battery.

Looking at the manual it recommends the batteries: BXT-96R-500 & BXT-96R-590

Which battery did you replace it with ?
