New 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid owner

I am happy to have found this forum since the other Lincoln forums which include MKZ's don't seem to have that much activity.

Has anyone installed the aftermarket chrome or body colored moldings yet, and if so, how do you think they look and are they worth the bother?

Thanks.

For a picture, go to http://www.carid.com/2010-lincoln-mkz-spoiler/ then look around for the "Deck Lid Spoiler"

NOTE, this is NOT the wing spoiler. The part number is 3D-691239 (I think). Don't be put off that it says 2011 MKZ, because the 2010 and 2012 are all the same.

If you do phone them (1-800-505-3274) you will need the color code off the sticker on your door post, assuming you want it delivered painted. Much cheaper to have them paint it, vice you bringing it to a paint shop for painting.

If you do order one, check this forum for previous posts by me when I installed mine, or just ask me again in this thread and I will give advice on the two best ways to install. Once that tape sticks, there is no way you can remove it.

BTW, it looks great. This is my wifes car, and she loves the look with the lip spoiler ("Deck Lid Spoiler").

The guy you spoke with DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. I just looked it up in the manufacturers website, and it is lested for the 2010, 2011 and 2012. They all use the same trunk lid.

Go to http://3dcarbon.com/style_kits.asp?ID=77&l1=0&l2=4&l3=19&l4=38 and see it there. If that address does not work, just go to http://3dcarbon.com/ and search for the MKZ. 3dcarbon is the manufacturer but it costs more to order from them than it does from carid.

I just doublechecked the above long address, and yes, it does work, and yes, the 2012 is listed. Tell carid that I said they are full of it. You may want to phone 3dcarbon to make sure their information in their website is correct. I have their phone number listed as

949-650-1999 located in California so they should still be there. Did not check for phone number in their website.

I cannot see why it wouldn't fit either. The 2013 will be different, of course.

I have ordered by parts now, but from 3dcarbon, not CarID, because when I spoke to CarID again, this time they told me that the lip spoiler took 4 bolts to attach to the trunk, which by that time I knew from your help and the 3dcarbon site was definitely not true. Additionally, 3dcarbon, when you speak to them directly, provides a substantial discount on price, much less than the CarID site charges even with their discounts. I should have the painted lip spoiler in the next week or so and after installation will post some pictures here.

You will receive instructions from 3dCarbon on how to install the lip spoiler, but first I will tell you the following.

I've ordered two of their spoilers, and have been very happy with them both. That being said, I installed them differently. Both methods worked great, so you can take your pick. You may want to print this post.

1. First method. - On a former car, (with the backing paper still on the tape), I placed the spoiler on the trunk, just to see how it would fit, and to see how it sits in the correct area. I then cleaned the area on the trunk with rubbing alcohol. I then got a water hose out, and I wet the area of the trunk, plus I removed the backing tape from the spoiler. With the trunk wet and the spoiler tape wet (it might help if a helper was holding the water hose), I LIGHTLY placed the spoiler in position. Because the trunk and the spoiler tape is wet, you can make adjustments to the location without fear that the tape will stick at this time. Once you are sure the spoiler is in the correct position, press down on the spoiler, and lightly wipe away any water from the area. Press down again and again, wipe away any water. Leave the car sit all night so any moisture evaporates and in the morning again, press down to make sure the spoiler sticks. When I used them method, the spoiler stayed put, through many car washes, never moving. The beauty of this method was that when I made an error on placing the spoiler, with everything wet, I could still slide the spoiler to the correct position.

2. Second method - This is the method in the instructions from 3dCarbon, and how I did the job on my present MKZ. I placed the spoiler on the trunk to make sure of the correct position. I also marked the area of the trunk with masking tape, plus marked the left and right edge of where the spoiler would sit. I then cleaned the trunk area with rubbing alcohol. I then applied the special liquid supplied with the spoiler. This liquid is called a 3M Adhesion Promotor. Applied to the trunk where the lip will sit. Next, being VERY CAREFULL, remove just a couple inches of the tape backing from one edge of the spoiler. (Have a friend help you to hold and place the lip). Place the edge of the spoiler on the trunk. MAKE SURE IT IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION, because if it is not in the correct position, there is no way you will be able to remove it or make an adjustment to the position. (this tape will stick). Then slowly pull the tape backing back away from the end that is now stuck to the trunk. Don't make any mistakes on the position, because once that tape touches the trunk, you will not be able to move the lip. Once all the backing is removed from the lip, just push down on the lip to make sure all areas of the lip are sticking to the trunk.

This is the method plus photos in the instructions provided for my MKZ,

Lastly, don't try to use both the water method and the Adhesion Promotor method, because that Adhesion Promotor is so good, even with the trunk lid soaked with water, the tape will stick as if it was dry. (don't ask).

Use one method or the other. Once the spoiler arrives, and you have installed it, let us know how it worked out.

Has your spoiler arrived yet? Keep us informed.

Bob, I used the method called OPH: other people's help. I am not handy, so went to a shop here that specializes in after market parts installation for NASCAR and other car enthusiasts. Everything was installed for $60.
