TRUNK DESIGN FLAW? You decide

IS THIS A TRUNK DESIGN FLAW? (MKZ 2013-2015) - I think my trunk issue is not unusual, but quite common. My Lincoln is a 2013 MKZ Hybrid w/power trunk (8200mi.) which I purchased in June, 2013. The left upper trunk lid tip rubs the rubber molding attached to the body upon closing and tears it. This rubber molding is supposed to guard the tip of the trunk lid against touching the car body. After two replaced rubber moldings, it continues to tear. The dealer even tried to glue it down and it still ripped.

I first noticed it a year after ownership. When first taken to the dealer, they claimed that they had not seen this before. Today, they wrote on invoice: " CAUSE: REPLACE MOLDING TORN.--999A REPLACE TRUNK MOLDING - COMPARED TO LIKE VEHICLES - WORKING AS DESIGNED." The service rep. said that it happens on some cars and even showed me a 2015 in their showroom that did the same thing! Strange: At first, they never saw it before and now it is common and "WORKING AS DESIGNED". Is this a design flaw?

I have requested to have the trunk lid adjusted, but they just said, "We'll contact Ford for a solution." When I got home today from the dealer and parked the car in the garage, I noticed that the trunk lid tip IS now scraping the paint OFF at contact point. The tear and damage is minor now, but I'm looking at 5+ years down the road or when the warranty expires and the metal starts to rust. Who is going to pay to repair it then?

Are there similar situations like mine in this forum? I wonder if this also happens to non-powered trunks. Please submit your suggestions and comments. Thank you.

I have a 2013 MKZ Hybrid w/power trunk purchased new in May 2013, roughly 18,000 miles on it now.   I did not ever notice anything like this and just went out and checked the whole rubber molding in the trunk closely - I don't see even any sort of marks or wear on it at all.  We use the trunk frequently for groceries every week and other purchases to keep them out of sight.

My opinion is the scraping paint is an issue since that is potential long term damage - and indicates that something is not aligned properly.  You definitely have a good reason to be concerned.  Do you have the ability to take it to another Lincoln dealer to get their opinion.  There are 4 or 5 Lincoln only or Lincoln/Ford dealers within 20-30 miles of where I live and I know there are huge differences in how they price their cars.  Their service departments (and concierge services) are vastly different also.

UPDATE - Dealer will not budge and claims that all cars in their lot has the same issue. I sent a complaint letter to Lincoln Motors and I'm waiting for their response. Will keep you posted.

Why don't you have the dealer walk you through their lot to show you how their Lincoln MKZs possess the same problem?

Absolutely a must to throw on the agenda.  Take pictures of every single one and post them everywhere.  Make a YouTube video.  Use Twitter.  Take charge.  This is ridiculous - with computer aided design and robot assembly... please.  Shouldn't happen.

robertlane: Please see my other entry: "BEWARE - POWER TRUNK OWNERS". Ford Motors, I mean 'Lincoln Motors' wont budge either. I have gone to the 'Consumer Protection Agency' at the state level and I'm waiting for their mediation process. This issue is absolutely ridiculous! I know I should have bought a Lexus. I also have a Toyota Avalon. Any little problem that requires attention, the Toyota dealer bends backwards to repair it.

It always bothers me when I hear others having this experience with the dealers. I guess I should count myself lucky. I have never had any problems over the past 16 years with my dealer. In fact, they go out of their way to make sure I'm satisfied. Although they keep the Lincoln "section" seperate they do service and sell Ford, Sabaru and Mazda vehicles at the same location.

I think that it's a given that the Lincoln Motor Company has to educate/motivate a number of dealers in their network.

2 thoughts. Each dealer has a Ford/Lincoln District Representative that is sent concerns to them by the servicing dealer. Did the dealer direct your concern to them?

Second thought....if you are determined....I would call Mark Field's office in Dearborn and tell them about this runaround. I did it when Alan Mulally was the Executive....and wicked fast response. What do you have to lose? Trust me, you'll get action. 1-800-392-3673 press #4
