2016 2.0L Reserve FWD Rough Shifting

This auto has 44,500 miles. I bought it from a dealer off-lease in 2019 with 25k miles. It looked and even smelled new. I'm the second owner. I'm sure this issue has been covered at length. If, after reading my post, you can't point me in the right direction, it will be most appreciated. In April of this year, right before the Lincoln extended warranty ran out, I took it to the dealer for this issue. They said they flashed the transmission control module, and the problem seemed to be solved. Now it's back and it's worse. It's intermittent (of course) and happens on the 1-2 or 2-3 upshift, not exactly sure which. When it's really bad, it feels like I got hit from behind. I will be taking it to a local transmission shop, which I'm researching now. My questions are: 1) One shop immediately mentioned engine mounts. Is this part of the history of the problem? 2) If the trans isn't damaged internally, what part(s) need replacement (ECM, TCM, other)? 3) Can the Ford OEM replacement parts be trusted, or are they the same junk that's causing the problem now? 4) Any recommendations on aftermarket/reman parts? I would very much appreciate hearing from people who have actually had this problem fixed on their cars, rather than second-hand accounts. Many thanks for your help, PW

Hi pwcopy. Sorry to hear you are having issues. I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can.

1- There are no inherent engine or transmission mount design issues with the Fusion. That being said, things do fail, so failed engine and/or transmission mounts could be an issue.

2- Could be any or none of those. There is no way to accurately blind Internet diagnose what parts may have failed and/or need replacing.

3- I would definitively recommend using Ford/Motorcraft OEM replacement parts.

4- If you plan on keeping your Fusion, same advice as above. I would recommend staying with the Ford/Motorcraft parts. You are taking your chances with aftermarket/remanufactured parts. The exception to that rule would be if you plan of getting it running and then selling it. Then you maybe able to can save a little money on remanufactured parts.

One either recommendation: Have you checked the transmission fluid for proper level and smell/appearance? Have you ever had it flushed/filled since purchasing? If not, before doing anything else, the first step I would advise would be to have the transmission fluid flushed/filled by your Ford Dealer or an independent shop you trust. See if that helps alleviate or even resolve the issue.

If you use an independent shop, be sure they use the proper specification transmission fluid, as outlined on the Maintenance/Specifications section of the Owners Manual. No substitutes.

I'm sure others will jump in to help if they can.

Let us know who you make out and good luck.
