Should I buy it?

I test drove it, seems fine, put a deposit on it..but having second thoughts because of the mileage and the CarFax not showing a whole lot of maintenance. It still has about 600 miles left for the factory drivetrain warranty...and naturally the dealer wants to sell me a $3000 warranty.

CarFax is only as good as the person / Business that reports the info.

 

Depending on how much you drive 600 miles would be good if you do not.  For me 600 would be gone in a month.

 

3000 for a warranty seems high.... and it would depend on what is covered, and what is not.

Hi Woodzy. Any used car is a gamble. And as Multitask stated, a CarFax report only goes so far. For example, maintenance can be performed but unreported, just as the vehicle could have been in unreported accidents. So unless there are maintenance records available, you will need to assume spending money for all required maintenance between 0-~70,000 miles (6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty), according to the Maintenance Schedule in the 2018 MKZ Owners Manual. And yes, the mileage is a bit high for a ~4-5 year old vehicle.

 

If you want to go through with the purchase, my advice would be to have a professional vehicle inspection performed before you purchase, by a shop you trust, if possible.

 

If you want an ESP Plan, I would recommend two things: First...purchase a factory, LincolnProtect ESP plan, not a third party, aftermarket plan. There are 4 levels of LincolnProtect Plan coverage.

After extensive local local Lincoln/Ford Dealer and online price shopping, it is where I purchased the LincolnProtect ESP's for my previous 4 Lincolns. Their pricing has always been the lowest of the online sellers, and far lower than Lincoln/Ford Dealer prices.

Not sure if you noticed, but the front right wheel is different from the others, that one wheel is from an earlier year than 2017.    You can easily pick a one that matches, but the wheel was most likely damaged pretty bad somehow.

Yes...I did notice that...they claim they will address it...but if not...I'll have them discount the vehicle at least $500.  Thanks for noticing!

Hi woodzy. I did not look at the photos, so good catch by fusionff. Also, now that I did look, the one wheel they show an individual image of has some pretty good curb rash.

 

So just as an FYI: Although I am not sure about the pricing on that particular wheel style, the retail price on some of the MKZ wheels approaches $900. So you may want to check with their Parts Department on the replacement pricing and factor that in.

 

EDIT- Also, I just recalled...There was an issue with some MKZ front passenger massage seats failing. The connectors/wiring would overheat and short out after a period of use. So be sure to carefully check them out.

 

When operating properly, they run on a timer for 20 minutes. What will happen is, after a while the connector/wiring will overheat and they will shut off before 20 minutes. You can restart them, but each time you restart, they will tend to operate for a shorter and shorter time period, until they will not work at all.

 

So you need to repeatedly use them to ensure they are operating correctly. Otherwise it would be a very expensive repair after you purchase...if you care about the massage seats. This can be a problem when shopping for a used vehicle, since it could take a minimum of 40 minutes to properly test the seats.

Hi alll...Thanks for all the good advice.  I just called Zeigler Lincoln and they quoted me $2630 for a 5 yr 48k. Premium Care $100 Deductible.. Everything covered except for wear and tear...But they are making me get inspected for around $200 first..  Doesn't seem like a bad deal at all.  I bought an Infiniti from a Lincoln dealership a few years back and I bought a ford warranty...and the warranty was amazing.

Sounds good if you trust them, and have the replacement matching wheel promise in writing. A good body shop should be able to tell you quickly if there's been chassis repairs on any of the 4 corners, no guarantee the corner with the different wheel was where it was located in an accident. Not all maint. gets reported, btw, there could have been full oil changes by the owner, or various maint. by a small local shop that doesn't report to anyone. One reason I take mine to the local dealership and pay just a little more for the oil & filter and similar. There's no record of my changing the cabin filter...
