adding paddle shifters to 2010 mkz

i was in the process of putting paddle shifters from a 2010 mks in my 2010 mkz and i went to test the select to shift wires after looking at a wire diagram. before running the wires and adding the pins to the clock spring on the wheel but unlike the Taurus or mks which is only the two up and down and a ground. mine goes has a four wire PCB  that has the two up and down wires a ground (which acts as a signal wire) and a power wire and i thought that all i needed was the up and down and a ground/signal but after hooking up to the paddles before running wires up to the wheel i cant make it shift gears do i need a controller in the middle? and if so what do i use
