Loss of 8" Screen

So here is the story, and I'm hoping it will be helpful for those that this happens to.

my 2020 MKZ Hybrids screen went black yesterday.

This after seen android Auto quit randomly for about 3 days.

AA had quit yet again

So I pulled over to see if I could get it back. (granted I was at a rest stop in the eastern part of Calif on the 10 freeway)

I did a Factory Reset , thinking that might reset the settings, and then when it was time for it to come back up, it did not, it was just black.

After 'some' fiddling with it, I left it black.  Hoping it was just a long delay in coming back up, but it was not.

So I got home, and parked it over night.

Got up this morning, and the Lincoln greeting was not there... and screen still black.  BUT after 15-20 seconds the screen lit up with the back light... so I knew it was on, so maybe the APIM had died.

After all I did not have radio, or Bluetooth, or back up camera.

and then after sitting it it waiting to warm up (for here it was cold, 41 F )

The Lincoln Logo showed, and it booted up... , as I hooked up everything, and tested and all seems fine.... just sluggish...

Had to add things back, as I knew that would happen...

So far so good, it all seems fine....

So it seems that the reset 'so far' has fixed things... it just took a few hours to recuperate

But I'm still going to call in and see if this is a for-shadow of things to come...   doubt it is under any warranty, I have 82K in miles so far (yes I drive a lot)

That's the thing with all this technology in our cars, it is easy for something to go wrong. I know for a while Cadillac owners had big issues with their CUE screens going bad. Sadly, when we do have failures outside of warranty, we are left with very expensive repairs because there are no low cost aftermarket solutions like there used to be. Glad it seems to be coming back for you. Hope it continues to work.

It's been quite cold on the East Coast this weekend.  Today, I had to run an errand and wanted to change the radio station using voice control.  All I got what was a "No USB Inserted" message.  As soon as the heat came on and the cabin warmed up, it was back to normal.  Of course, relatively speaking, 41º was balmy by comparison.  When the Lincoln MKS was introduced, there were common problems with the audio system in cold weather.

On Friday, the display on my 1-month-old laptop went black.  After speaking with tech support, parts are on order.?

It seems that everything needs an occasional reboot these days.  Last week, I opened my refrigerator and the temp readout indicated 276º in the freezer and 23º in the fridge part.  The freezer was not on fire and the fresh part was not frozen.  A check with a thermometer showed that the correct temps were being maintained in each part.  I cut the power to the unit, and when power was restored, the freezer immediately showed 0º, but the fridge went to 50º.  I was going to call for service in the morning, but when I got up, the fridge was showing 37º.  Go figure.  How many times have we gotten random messages in our cars that cleared after shut down and restart?

Well,  I regularly see temps below zero here in Minnesota and haven't had my screen go dark in either my old 2014 or the 2018. I'm not sure temperature alone is the factor,  the car manufacturers do lot of cold weather testing. But yes,  it does seem our modern electronics require an occasional reboot.

It is best to reboot a computer from time to time, I reboot my PC at work every Friday,  just so it gets the chance to do any Windows updates it missed during the week

One would assume restarting is good enough... but it tends not to reset hardware.

Shutting down, waiting for 5 seconds, and booting back up does that.

On another note, while I'm a So Cal person, I have lived in Denver for 2 years, so i know cold (sorta) parents grew up in Iowa....

Just an update

So after 2 days, it seems fine....

Even the responsiveness is better

and as an added thing to this.... right before I was looking at it when it was working.  The title bar (where time and temp are ) and bottom bar (where the icons for switching what you are doing) were missing.... this is why I did the factory reset.

I guess no telling what happened then, but Lincoln can push updates over Cellular whether you want it or not. WiFi has options not to update, but Cellular doesn’t. They would update me while driving when I was far from my home WiFi.

The only way I could prevent mine updating from 3.3 to 3.4 over Cellular was to do a master reset and NOT agree to Lincoln Way. I used Cyan to get back to 3.3 and lost usage of the app. I don’t like 3.4 because of the reduction in audio volume.

Anyway, I hope your issue was just a fluke.

Hi Tom. Just to avoid confusion for other owners regarding SYNC 3/3.3/3.4: Lincoln cannot "push updates over Cellular" to our vehicles at all. Our SYNC 3 equipped vehicles do not have the ability to be updated or even receive updates via cellular signal.

SYNC 3 and it's iterations can only receive SYNC updates via WiFi network or manual update via USB.

SYNC 4 vehicles do have the ability to receive OTA (Over The Air) updates via call signal. But SYNC 4 is a far more advanced system with far more advanced capabilities.

Good luck.

Sorry, I don't 100% believe that Cellular is incapable of updates.

I received at least 2 unwanted updates to 3.4.  They happened when I least expected it, such as driving on the highway at least an hour from home.

I was once connected on WiFi, but then I disabled auto update after my first update to 3.4, which was probably where it started.

Back when this happened I started another post here about unplugging the damn modem. That held off the updates, until I found the Master Reset and not initializing the Lincoln Way app work around.

Hi Tom. No need to apologize. I understand you may not 100% believe it, but SYNC 3 versions have no ability to update via cell signal. Only WiFi network connection and manual USB updates.

There is no secret cell update ability and this information can be easily verified with a little online research. SYNC 4 does have OTA/cell signal update ability.

If anyone wants to carry this conversation on, please start a new thread, so we are not hijacking the original subject of this thread.

Good luck.

It has started to do it again....

drops the connection to AA, and the screen goes black for a couple seconds when it does it.

So one time I saw that it said it was reconnecting to my iPod Touch, both use USB, so I'm thinking it is USB that is failing.

Time for an oil change, so I will have them look at it as well.
