Hi all - performed an ATF level check this past weekend and discovered the level is below the bottom of the dipstick. After reading the service manual it states that if the tranny was removed and disassembled to fill with 6.2L and if the main control cover was removed to fill with 4.3L. No info on just a "drain and fill" cycle.

Anybody have any idea what the capacity should be for drain and fill only? Any recommendations on which tranny fluid to go with? Thanks in advance!

Mercon LV, the fluid that should be in your trans, expands a lot when it's hot. Assuming that you followed the procedure for checking the ATF in the owners manual, the question is why is the fluid low in the first place?  Transmissions don't "use" fluid.  The only other place it can go is via a leak.  Has the trans ever been serviced before?  If so, maybe it wasn't properly filled.  The OM says no to drive the car if the fluid is below the dipstick. That said,  a standard drain and fill starts with 4½ quarts of MERCON LV and you can adjust if necessary when the trans is completely warmed up.  Nothing else unless it clearly states that it meets FORD WSS-M2C938-A.  No "universal" ATF or anything like that.

The procedure is simple and can be seen here.  In the video, he's working on a Ford Edge Sport, but there's no difference for these purposes. It's a 6F55.

I believe the trans may have been serviced by the previous owner and simply not filled properly as I have yet to see any leaks. The level was checked at full operating temp.

Thanks a lot for the help and the video. Really helpful! Take care.
