Left Wheel well case with opening?

Hi,

 What is the purpose of the opening in  the front left wheel well case? I don't like the idea of water, mud and snow beeing spread in the engine compartment right where the fuses and relay box is! 

 

Please don't tell me it's the humidity detector to automatically start the wiper!?

Could you post a picture to show exactly what you're referring to?  IDK if you were kidding or not, but it certainly has nothing to do with the rain sensing wipers.  The moisture sensor for the wipers is located on the inside of the windshield, up near the rearview mirror.

Hi. Here's 2 pictures from the wheel well.  One from inside the wheel well case just above the wheel itself. One from the top near the fuse box in the engine compartment.  Yesterday I saw a similar opening in a car like mine. There was no cover but than I saw an other one with a cover. I have presumed they are easy to lose. I suspect the rain, mud and snow spreaded by the left tire near the fuses and relay box is the source of my other problem. No front flasher left nor right.

 

So what is the purpose of such opening in the wheel well?

Of course I was joking about rain detection!? as I know  water and electronic components could be a source of problem.

I had 2010 and 2012 MKZs and I don't remember seeing those. I honestly can't say what their purpose is but if you saw one with a cover then, apparently, it should have one.
