Out with the Old, In with the New

Well, I wasn't really looking to buy another car, but the used car market is pretty crazy right now so we decided to poke around a bit. And we came across a 2018 MKZ Reserve that was priced more than $6000 below KBB. We test drove it and I told my wife it will take an extraordinary trade offer to get me to take on the payments...lo and behold they offered us $2000 over KBB for our 2014. So the deal got done. Out with the blue 2014 and in with a red 2018. It's the 2.0 with AWD and only 23k miles. Here are the old and new side by side.

I do have one question, the owners manual says that to disable the auto folding mirrors to go in to vehicle settings in the left side steering wheel buttons, but I find no setting for the mirrors. Anyone know how to disable the auto folding mirrors?

Hi leftoverture. If I remember correctly (sitting in my house): Using the buttons on left side of steering wheel, go to "Settings" (click OK) > "Vehicle" (click OK)> scroll down to "Mirrors" (click OK). Uncheck the "Autofold" box.

Keep in mind, if you turn off the auto-fold mirrors, the "Welcome Mat"/Puddle Lamps will no longer illuminate.

Hopefully I got those steps correct.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

That is exactly what I have tried but there is no "mirrors" choice.

Hi leftoverture. Well, then assuming you pressed the correct button sequence, there are several possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:

- First, that my my memory is mistaken and it is another series of buttons to push. I can check that tomorrow (it is dark and raining here now).

- Second, that there is something wrong with your Driver Information Center, causing it to not show the "Mirror" choice.

- Third, that your MKZ is actually a Premier trim level, not a Reserve. Auto fold mirrors were not available on the base Premier trim level. They were standard equipment on the Select and Reserve models.

What paperwork do you have confirming your MKZ is a "Reserve" model?

If you can not find the Auto-fold option in your IPC, then you should probably make a service appointment with your Lincoln Leadership to get to the bottom of this. Is your MKZ still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty period?

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Yes, it is a Reserve. And the mirrors do auto fold and I get the puddle light. That is what I am thinking, too, is I will need the service department to check it out. I'm only interested in being able to turn this feature off for the winter, when it is subzero outside or icy.

The immediate things I notice between the 2014 and the 2018:

1) the interior is nicer in the 2018. It seems they put some effort into taking it up a notch.

2) Sync 3 is surely better in every way than Sync 2, but it is taking a bit of time for me to acclimate to the new interface. I was very accustomed to Sync 2 and it's idiosyncrasies.

3) I always thought if I went newer I would pursue the 3.0 but this one is the 2.0 and was just too good a deal to pass on. I noticed right away that the transmission is much smoother than in the 2014. At least it is with only 23k miles on it.

4) lastly, and this one kind of stinks, the cup holders are smaller. They will not accept my thermal mug the way the 2014 did. I do not know why they would make them smaller like that.

I'm sure I'll discover more as time goes on but these are the first things I noticed.

Hi leftoverture. Just went out to my car to check, and the button sequence I listed last night is correct.

"Settings" (click OK) > "Vehicle" (click OK)> scroll down to "Mirrors" (click OK). Uncheck the "Autofold" box.

Just to cover all the bases: After you clicked "OK" on "Vehicle", are you sure you scrolled all the way down the list to get to the second page of "Vehicle" settings options? There are three pages on mine.

I am sure you did, so sorry for the question. Just want to be sure we cover all possibilities before you take it in for service.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I did find the button this morning. I swear I scrolled all the way through last night but this morning it was right there where it should be so I guess it was user error.

Hi leftoverture. Well, at least we solved the problem. Or better yet...discovered there was no problem. ?

Good luck.

my 2020 has a button on the same part of the console where the up/down for windows are and mirror adjust... not sure if the 2018 is the same

unless that is not what you are looking for.  ?

Hi Multitask. Actually, nothing has really changed since the 2017 restyle through the end of production last year, so you are correct that the physical mirror adjustment buttons are also on the drivers armrest in the 2018 models.

However, leftoverture was looking for the menu option to enable/disable the automatic folding mirror feature, not the physical button to fold/extend.

But the button  information may always help someone in the future.

Good luck.
