Any idea what this sound is?

This started today while my wife was driving the car. Anyone wanna take a stab at it because I sure as hell can't think of anything that would make a noise like that.  My MKS has been acting up with stalling randomly (no codes have been set) so I am down one out of 2 cars and then this started. Need to know if it is OK to drive. My best guess is the dust shield behind the brake rotors, my wife swears she didn't run anything over but she spaces out when she drives and doesn't remember hitting something. I had a black streak on my Solstice that went from the bottom of the bumper cover to the middle of the hood.I questioned it and she said at firs that she didn't hit anything and then it was she ran over a piece of retread. She hit a whole damned tire is what happened. Things were bent behind the bumper cover.

The tires were just replaced by the dealership last week and the car was only driven from there to home and hasn't moved until today. There is no rust or anything like that on the rotors.

Hi kg. First, is your 2018 MKZ still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty? If yes, your best course of action would be to call the Service Department at your Dealership and make a service appointment. If not, take it to either a Lincoln/Ford Dealer or an independent shop you trust.

Blind Internet diagnosis is difficult at best, and correctly diagnosing noises over the Internet is just as difficult. The video makes more sense to you because you heard it live and could hopefully determine where it is coming from. We can not.

That being said...When does the noise occur? Does it only occur when you are pressing the brake pedal? Only when you are not pressing the brake pedal? Both? When you are going straight? When you turn left? When you turn right? All of those? None of those?

If one of our tech members has more insight into the noise on your video, I am sure they will jump in to help.

Also, we do have forum rules concerning language, profanity etc., so please correct the misspelling of "Dealership" in your posts.

Keep us updated and good luck.

While this seems to be your go to statement  I live an hour and a half from the dealership it takes 2 month to get an appointment with a loaner vehicle am I not supposed to operate my vehicle for 2 months? if not how would I get to work?.. I also want to throw in here the last time the car went to service it was there for 5 days and nothing got fixed. one part back ordered and the other part that took the 5 days to get was the wrong part. So now I have to drive 1.5  hours to get the car and 1.5 hours back to drive yet another 1.5 hours to drop the car off again and 1.5 hours back and 1.5 hours there again to get the car and 1.5 hours back again. Little obnoxious isn't it? I have an appointment with them at the end of the month to get the 2 hopefully correct parts installed into the car. I scheduled that appointment 3 weeks ago and I have 2 more weeks to wait. I cannot open another service request until this one is complete. I was told that is because of how Lincoln handles warranty claims. So I can't have them look at the car for the noise problem while they have it. once the claim for the 2 parts has been closed I can open a new one which will require a new appointment set out at least a month and if I want a loaner vehicle I have to wait even longer. Now if there is something wrong that is extensive enough that I should not drive the car how would I get it to the dealership to have the 2 parts installed to be able to open a new claim for the sound above. I would have to tow the vehicle down there, then tow it back to my house and then tow it back down there yet again. AAA isn't going to cut it, and good luck getting a tow driver that is willing to drive that far with the rates that AAA pays them. Had that happen to me before.

See the problem? So I need to know what could cause a sound like that and then from there I can determine if it is something easily fixed and if it is I will fix it. If it is not then I will have to then tip toe about Lincoln's service procedures and figure out how to get this new issue resolved and also how to get the vehicle down to them if it is unsafe to operate. But I cannot form a plan without knowing the possible cause. I have never heard a sound like that come from a vehicle before.  My wife was driving the car when it was doing it and I am lucky enough I got the video I have with the audio of the sound. She had a total of 10 videos and in all but one video she is holding the phone out the window while driving along at 40. The only thing you can hear is the wind. If she is unable to make a video there is in no way I can ask her questions like "does the tone change with speed" or  "does it change when you step on the brakes or turn the steering wheel"  I will get responses like "I think maybe it might change a little." which offers zero help. I am hoping that someone else might be able to give me something more then "bring it to the dealer"  because at this point my friend that is simply not an option. Had I known that this whole ordeal with how Lincoln handles their warranty work and had I know that I was going to have this issue I would have elected to hold off on getting the other things repaired. and one of those things is going to get me a ticket because my DRL flashes like a turn signal whenever it wants. So I am trying to not have that happen either.

Hi kg. You will find that using the New Vehicle Warranty will be the "go to statement" from many/most members here, for many/most "My car is making this noise, what is wrong..." type questions. This is because it is next to impossible to accurately tell someone what is wrong with a vehicle by a noise description, or a noise on a video. You want a blind internet diagnosis and that is usually an exercise in futility in cases like this.

I understand your frustration. At some time or another we have all been in similar situations, if we have lived long enough. And I and others here are very familiar with how the Work Order and Warranty Claims systems work, so you could have saved yourself a lot of typing. However, where you live etc., does not change reality.

We have one or two tech members who drop-in once in a while, otherwise this is a forum run by fellow Lincoln MKZ owners and enthusiasts and shade tree mechanics. If you can not figure out what is wrong when you can drive and listen to the car, how do you expect it to be correctly diagnosed over the Internet (whether you use the word "diagnosed" or not). I asked you the questions needed to at least try to help diagnose the problem, but you say you can not answer them because your wife can't.

You say her responses (or lack of the same) don't help you. Well, the lack of information and answers to the necessary questions doesn't help us either. A lack of information makes it rather difficult to accurately help, even under ideal circumstances. So it would help if you would remember that is not our fault.

Again, I understand your frustration. However, arguing with people here just because you don't get the answers you wanted or were hoping for will not help you.

I don't see that I can help you much, and I do not want to argue, so perhaps one of our tech members will jump in and be able to identify the cause of your noise from your video and tell you how to fix it without going to the Dealership. Until then, the rest of us will try to help if we can, if it all stay friendly, "my friend".

Keep us updated and good luck.
