Water sound??

So yesterday I was driving for a bit. Car was normal operating temp. With the radio off, on accelation, braking and turns I can hear what sounds like water that has stored somewhere behind the dash ( impractical I know ) or right at the other side of the firewall. Doesn’t happen all the time but just curious if anyone else has had this happen.

Hi WHITEY. Noises are always difficult to blind/deaf diagnose over the Internet.

So first...if your 2017 MKZ is still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty, call and make a service appointment to have the issue properly diagnosed and corrected. When you bring the car in, do not just tell them you have a water noise from somewhere behind the dash, hand them the keys and leave the car. Instead, ask the Service Writer to take a drive with you so you can demonstrate exactly what you are talking about. Have them clearly state they hear it. Helps to avoid the dreaded "Could not duplicate the customers concern" outcome.

If you are out of warranty: Some vehicles have been known to display a waterfall or gurgling sound from behind the dash. In some cases, it is due to air in the cooling system. Try topping off the coolant reservoir, with the correct coolant/distilled water mixture, to a little over the full mark. Do it with the vehicle cold (parked over night) and top off to maybe an inch over the "Cold Fill" mark. Then check every few days of driving to see if it has dropped at all. Refill as necessary.

If that does not eliminate or lessen the noise, you will need to do some further investigation and diagnosis.

Hopefully one of our tech members will also jump in with more advice.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Check the drains for your a/c condensate line, may be plugged.

I have also seen cars where the drains in the doors (along bottom edge) are stuck or plugged and make a swishy sound when accelerating or braking, check those as well
