Tire pressure display

Hi ruby. Or the old fashioned way... a tire pressure gauge? ?

Good luck. ?

I set the my tire pressures to 38 psi with a digital tire pressure gauge... the dash display shows 34 to 41 psi. The wife's 2017 shows 37 to 39 psi. My 2018 F-150 tire pressure display always matches the digital gauge. Variations in the TPMS sensors?? ?

Hi Jim. Hmmm...In a case like this, my best recommendation would be to borrow another tire pressure gauge and see if the pressures it registers match your digital gauge, the TPMS system, or are different yet again.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

The dash displays on my 2017 and 2020 MKZs both match(ed) my  analog gauge exactly.

Hi Art. Like yours, my TPMS system and tire pressure gauge also match. Good quality analog gauges in both my cars here also. And I periodically check both of my gauges against each other to be sure they are still registering accurately. ??

I have a feeling when these situations occur, it is either due to a poor quality/defective tire pressure gauge or a problem in the TPMS system. Perhaps also a slight chance of user error once in a while? ?

Stay safe in the approaching snowstorm and good luck!

I may be thinking of an older system and/or other brand, but doesn't the car need to be rolling to get the updated tire pressures displayed after an adjustment in pressure? FWIW, my '17 had all 4 corners within a PSI of what I get with a good digital guage, with the OEM 19" wheels & tires. I just put on aftermarket wheels & Blizzaks for winter and 3 of the 4 corners were in agreement with the digital and one was 2 PSI low when cold and 1 PSI when up to highway temps on a 28° day, so I added a pound. CRS seems to be affecting me, because I don't remember if I ever looked at the psi just before going for a drive vs a couple blocks down the road.

Hi 17MKZ. That was the older system. I can adjust the tire pressure in my 2018 in the driveway and it will register a short time later without the car having been driven/moved.

In fact, while the car is parked in my driveway during the day, I can get in the car and check the dash readout, or even check the LincolnWay app on my phone and see how the rising temperatures or sun hitting the tires on one side of my car raise the PSI in my tires.

Good luck.

Thanks, must have been a previous car or just CRS. Good to know that it'll update whenever a tire changes. For a couple of years I just checked & adjusted all the corners at once using my digital, and never bothered checking the car's readout (too lazy to change from Fuel Mileage setting?) until doing the Tire Rack thing and all the pressures were 2-3 pounds from sill sticker and each other. Thx again.

So it turns out my 15 year old digital tire pressure gauge is getting old and cranky, refusing to show consistent readings. ? I picked up a new digital gauge, as well as an analog gauge. Both new gauges match each other, while the old one is getting a little senile. After the snow clears up I'll recheck the TPMS readings.

HI Jim. Glad to hear you have found the probable cause of your tire pressure issues. Let us know the outcome when the snows clear.

Good luck.

Right on!  Do that before the trip.  But, in the rain at night or on the freeway when that tire pressure warning comes on I'm taking the high-tech way out ?

  • 1 year later...

old thread, but I thought I'd mention, to those that don't have a tire pressure read-out it may be time to check your tires air pressure.

The 100* plus days of summer have finally passed and our frigid 60*'s have arrived ?    I randomly decided to check my tire pressures, last checked last summer, and they were all at 28psi, down from 35psi.  No wonder my mpg has gone down.  That 40* temp change certainly effected the 19" tires.

I am a tire nerd , so one of my favorite things on the 2018Z is the tire pressure readout gauge for each tire , especially now at the change of weather the tire pressure falls as weather turns colder . The hand gauge is the best way to check ,.  so it was reassuring that the  tpms readout and hand gauge were right on .
