2017 MKZ reserve auto fan speed med and high same speed?

Hello all, I just purchased a 2017 MKZ reserve.  I had a 2013 and loved it. My question is about the auto fan control settings. Of the 3 settings low is low, but medium and high speed are the same blower speed. I can manually change speeds with the dial but that defeats the purpose of auto. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hi Suctoes. Blind Internet diagnosis is difficult. However, if I understand correctly, your description tells me your DATC system may be working correctly.

To explain why I state that: As far as choosing the maximum fan speed allowable when on AUTO: using that setting does not manually choose the fan speed. It simply tells the system the maximum fan speed you want to allow. This is because some people are bothered by the high speed. So choosing between "Low", "Medium" or "High" does not actually change the speed manually. It simply selects  the allowable parameters that the system can use if necessary.

So in your case right now, It may simply be that the AUTO system feels the high fan speed is not necessary during this temperate time of year.

And yes, as you discovered...changing the fans speed with the dial automatically "...defeats the purpose of auto". So does changing the chosen air registers (Defroster, instrument Panel, Footwell).

If you have not already done so, taking a look at the DATC operations explanation in your Owners Manual would probably be a good idea, in case my explanation is unclear or you think it does not address your question properly.

If you still feel there is an issue, then you will probably need to make a service appointment. Is your 2017 still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty or some other type of Extended or Dealer Warranty?

Keep us updated and good luck.

Thanks for the response. It sounds like there must be a problem with the system. I am not unfamiliar with automatic climate control works, and understand what you are saying but if I set the temp to lowest temp or highest temp the auto setting for med and high are still the same speed. Example,

I get in my car after work and its sunny outside, very hot inside the car, if i set the temp to the lowest temp and cycle through the auto fan speeds low, med, and high. The fan does change between low and med but high is the same speed as med. High never gets close to max fan speed. If i turn the dial up one click while fan is in auto lo. The second led lights up and screen says fan speed 2. If i turn the dial up 1 click from auto med 4 leds light up screen says fan speed 4. If i turn the dial up 1 click from auto high 4 leds light up screen says fan speed 4. Thats with the temp control set to coldest setting or hottest setting.

I hate taking our lincolns to our 2 local dealers with or without warranty. They never have a loaner vehicle and take forever to do anything.  A typical oil change will take 3+ hours, with an appointment set 2 weeks in advance.

Hi Suctoes. It is just so difficult to diagnose something like this over the Internet.

The DATC system takes many variables into account (such as interior/exterior temperature differential), when choosing fan speed, registers being used etc. So it is difficult to know if there is an issue or your system simply feels high fan speed is not necessary  to cool/heat the car.

Since you seem to be feel there is definitely an issue, your best course of action would be to make a service appointment. I understand youdfon' t like to bring your car in for service, no sane individual does. However, is your car still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty or some other type of Extended or Dealer Warranty which would cover this type of service?

Regarding appointments and loaners: Most Auto Dealers, of any type, do not have loads of loaners sitting around unused. It just makes poor business sense. So loaners go to emergency customers first, then non-emergency warranty and routine maintenance customers next. So it is simply a matter of planning ahead for these types of non-emergency situations. Call ahead to make an appointment, tell them you need service and a loaner, and you will get the next available date a loaner is available.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.
