Canister Purge Valve

Recommended Posts

Hello all, new member here, recently purchased a 2017 3.0t black label and I am shocked to see how little information is available on the MKZ after 2016 over all.

I am trying to locate the canister purge valve location on the 3.0T engine it wasn't immediately obvious and I am getting the check engine light for P1450 code.

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have not removed any of the intake yet but prefer to have a better idea before I do.

Thanks in advance look fwd to reading more here.

For any viewers curious or interested, Bosch/FoMoCo p/n 0280142519 is what is on the car, very obvious and visible in your face kind of thing once the plastic engine cover is removed.

However, most auto parts sites and searches for parts by year, make, and model etc DO NOT show the correct part. this includes Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts. They show and provide the wrong part which is why I struggled to find where it was located.

Hi sevenhate. Welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum. ?

In the future, you may have better results if you simply call or go to the Parts Department at your local Lincoln or Ford Dealer and ask them for the part number, price and other information, instead of big box parts stores. Once you have the correct part number, you can always purchase somewhere else if you feel their price is too high.

Good luck with your new MKZ!

you would think that, right? I just had it inspected and they saw the check engine light which I already knew the code for P1450 and they said they would have to connect their computer and instant charge of 100+ just for that. I told them no I just need a canister purge valve and they didn't even look it up.

I was also trying to get the rear emblems (mkz and black label badging) replaced since they either fell off or were stolen since the Z and black label were missing.

They said they couldn't find any issue with the emblems. I told them they don't sell MK vehicles... then had to walk them through the difference between emblems. mind you this is a ford dealer with the VIN. They also couldn't find the black label emblem and said it doesn't exist in any of their records for these cars. I suggested they google image search.

Some other minor questionable issues with their service as well but, I did at least try I just wasn't demanding.  FWIW Tasca auto parts sells factory parts at fair prices.

Hi sevenhater.  Yes, Tasca Parts sells Ford factory parts at good prices. There are actually many good sources of Lincoln/Ford parts that members here have used. Pricing can be done easily by Googling "Ford parts sellers"

About your car in particular: Is your MKZ still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty? If yes, the diagnostics and service would be covered under warranty. And according to what was causing the CEL, it could still be covered under the 6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty. Your Warranty Guide would tell you if the Canister Purge Valve is covered.

In addition, if that is the treatment you received from that Dealership, you should find another Lincoln Dealership.

A lot of variables here, which are always hard to unwind over the Internet. However, in the future, if you want a part/part number, I would recommend you do not ask the Service Writers, Techs etc. Go to the Parts Department and ask them.

If I were you, and your MKZ is still within the New Car or Powertrain Warranties, the first thing I would do is see why the Canister Purge Valve was not diagnosed and replaced under warranty.

Just trying to help. Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Without a diagnostic being run, how do you know you just need a canister purge valve?  A code P1450 doesn't automatically lead to that conclusion.  What do you mean by you had it inspected?  If you bring a car to the dealer with a CEL, it's standard procedure for them to charge you a diagnostic fee.  That's just the way it works.  It's not customary for an owner to tell the service department what the  fix is.  Where did you buy this car and how long after you bought it did the CEL appear? There are numerous possible reasons for this code:

WRT the BL emblems, there is a specific process for ordering BL parts that a Ford dealer wouldn't be familiar with.  My son was a parts specialist at a BL Lincoln dealer.  They couldn't find the #s b/c BL parts aren't in the regular Ford catalog.   You'd have to go to a Lincoln dealer.

Thanks for information and suggestion. I didn't expect special treatment as much as I had hoped for a bit more of something along the lines of exceptional service. It was a Ford dealership and not Lincoln which may explain things to some extent. As for the warranty suggestion to be honest I didn't think of it and nothing was brought up about it (falls under exceptional service). I am not sure if the initial new car warranty is transferable but I do know the 5yr 70k is. However looking into that engine sensors and entire fuel pressurization system are listed as exclusions to it, so may not have helped.

As for the parts, you may be right on going direct to the parts department, but I was assured that they could use my VIN to look all of it up. Although emblems were double the price through them than on the site in my previous post and they were able to get me the correct part number for the MKZ portion. However I will use your suggestion in the future.

you are absolutely correct that a P1450 code doesn't automatically lead to the conclusion of the purge valve. However, Ford and Lincoln have had issues with purge valves on their vehicles going back a while and I believe TSBs on other makes regarding it as well. I am able to read the vehicle codes and in general look up the most common cause. So, for minimal effort and less than $30 it is worth it to replace the part and verify at the very least that is not the issue before moving forward to other options. their diagnostic equipment is capable of a lot more than just general code reading and for somethings that is worth that initial cost. I didn't see any harm in them replacing it if I had asked them to.

I didn't bring the car to them for the CEL. I had them perform multipoint inspection and service and had the tires replaced because one had a sidewall bulge. So had them mount and balance and perform a 4 wheel alignment. All of this gives me either a list of things they find needing fixed or no list of things (as was the case) for driveline and mechanical and they did note that the CEL was on but I didn't request or turned down diagnostics.

the CEL was not on when I purchased it, came on a few days later, I can reset it for a period of time but it does come back.

Regarding the emblems I was assured before bringing it in that it would not be an issue and that they could use the VIN. I did ask. I purchased the car approximately  2hours from where I live. it was near King of Prussia, PA. so going back to that location is not ideal but the price was where I wanted it to be with the options I was looking for.

For $30, I would have tried that first as well, given Ford's history with purge valves.  I hope that's the cure.

In light of the fact that CEL came on shortly after you got the car probably means that the prior owner reset it before selling it, just as you've been doing.  As you've found, resetting the light doesn't cure the problem.

Let us know how you make out.

Just for information in case someone needs it.

My Vehicle: 2017 3.0T AWD

Giving that P/N to Ford/Lincoln parts guys did not yield anything so he search for a canister purge valve and came up with a different part number. The P/N above is part of an entire bracket assy which parts guy said cannot be purchased by itself. Full price ~$170.xx

OP is partially correct with the Autozone info. There are 2 types listed for the 2017 3.0 AWD. 1 is correct, 1 is wrong.

The correct P/N is Dorman 994-073. Somehow this part is very very popular - always out of stock. I even called Dorman itself. The price also varies a lot per retailer from $30+ at Rock Auto to $61+ at Autozone.

My point :

I neither had a check engine light nor a code. My vehicle has this issue of slight but obvious shake RIGHT AFTER gas fill up - all the time. It goes away though on the next start up or two depending on how much you have traveled.

Based on online research, this is what people replace when they have the same issue - regardless of car manufacturer.

My order finally came last night and installed the part.

This morning, I filled up - problem fixed.

Fordparts.com has the assembly... Part #: 9B325 Fuel Tube Support Bracket and they're awful proud of it at $90 before shipping. Be sure to enter your VIN or vehicle info to get the right part as there's multiple hits if you just search the p/n.

There's so many mistakes with descriptions and what is on which car, but this fits the MKZ 3.0. I wish I could find it on Tasca, but I can't see it no matter how I search.  Found it on Tasca as p/n GL3Z-9B325-B

https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/ford-bracket-fuel-tube-support-gl3z9b325b?c=az0x

I don't know if replacing just the valve section (0280142519) of this assembly will fix your issue. I would also avoid Dorman as their quality was a thing of nightmares back when I had my LS (coolant expansion tanks, etc).

I have not bought it yet, wondering if this will fix the stumble at idle after fueling up.

EDIT: I no longer have the stumble. To prevent its return, I stopped topping off the tank, and I now leave the pump nozzle in the car for 10 seconds after it shuts off.
