Or a failing fuel filter?

Hi kramf. Yes, could also possibly be clogged fuel filter. Or a multitude of other issues.

We were only trying to reassure Chris109 that whatever the problem was, it was not due to the 93 octane rating of the fuel he was using at the time (which is what he thought it may be).

Hard to pin down the actual cause though, since Chris said it only happened once (or maybe twice), and he isn't even sure which MKZ it happened with (his 2013 or 2017). Hopefully it was a bad tank of gas and will not happen again.

Good luck.

I bet my bottom dollar it was a faulty EVAP purge value. Leading cause for "bad gas symptoms" which otherwise are really rare to happen in reality. Those purge value units were potentially faulty from manufacturing between 2012 to 2018, multiple engines, models and TSBs came out as a result. My 2014 2.0T Fusion suffered from it for a while.

Hi Art. Was in a hurry this morning, but that was what I was stating, in a convoluted way. Full HP rating (I wrote "improved performance") is obtained with premium fuel.

So Chris109's stumbling problem was not caused by using 93 octane. It was either bad gas or another problem.

Good luck.

Without really wracking my brain, eh hem, I'm starting to believe it was my '13 that it happened to.  In a thread from a previous year, I stated I was heading south and miscalculated from where I filled up and when I left.  I just about coasted into a station in Balt ( I started in Albany, NY) when I realized I was even below empty, running on fumes.  That is where I filled up with 93 octane.  And every time I stopped along I95, the car had problems with acceleration.  So, it must have been gas or just crap from the tank making it's way into the filter.  It never did it again.

And I do not care about HP.  I just want the best mpg so I don't need to stop as often.

Hi Art. Just wanted to let you know I wasn't losing my marbles...yet. ?

Good. That makes one of us. This morning I kept the cardboard toilet paper tube and threw the spindle from the holder into the wastebasket.

I'd call the power on the 2.0t "adequate". You can bomb down the turnpike at 90-100 without breaking a sweat. It's perfectly respectable power and if you've been driving for 4 plus decades you appreciate how far cars have come.
