Change Oil Soon?

Recommended Posts

Your car has an Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM).  It doesn't just depend on time and mileage. It takes a number of other parameters into account based on driving conditions.  You can read the details here.

IOW, if you got the alert, you shouldn't wait for 40K miles.  Change the oil now.  Failure to do so could negatively impact your 6/70 powertrain warranty should you need it.

Why is this warning coming on over 2k miles before the 40k scheduled maintenance? Many thanks for your help, PW

Hi pwcopy. And just to add to drolds1's good information: Out of curiosity, at what mileage was your last oil change performed? It is usually noted somewhere on the Invoice. The IOLM does not come on at the 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 etc. mile marks. It illuminates shortly before ( I believe ~500 miles) 10,000 miles/1 Year after the last time you had the oil changed and it was reset.

As an example: If your last oil change was performed at 29,000 miles, the IOLM will begin warning you at ~38,500 miles. In other words, ~500 miles before the 39,000 mile mark (29,000 + 10,000 - 500= 38,500 miles).

And as drolds1 stated, that 10,000 mile/1 Year oil change interval is a best case scenario. If the IOLM senses the need for an earlier oil change, due to heavier duty service, it will warn you to change sooner, as necessary. This information is also contained in your Owners Manual.

So don't wait until 40,000 miles.

Hope my explanation is understandable.

Keep us updated and good luck.

An FYI for all recent model year Fusions: Although you should always check your Owners Manual for the correct Oil Change Interval, all recent model year Fusions have a 1 year/10,000 mile Oil Change Interval and are factory filled with Motorcraft Synthetic Blend oil. This applies to ICE/conventional engines and hybrids.

Good luck.

I got the email that I was almost there, but I still have 36% to go.  cuz I'm a hybrid, I can go 10K between, they use a synth blend

I've never gotten an email reminder to have the oil changed for any of my MKZs.  I do get mailers from my dealer.

I'm going to correct this (no need from BBF, so don't respond) it wasn't an email, it was the Lincoln app....

So there is no confusion, I have a HYBRID, you might not!!!  So the rules are different!!!  Consult your manual, or Dealer!!!

FWIW - there also seems to be a time factor in the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM), I don't drive a lot of miles.  On my 2017 MKZ 3.0 purchased 7/28/16 - Mine came up with the reminder 8/8/17 (6,600 miles), 7/20/18 (10,700 miles), 7/12/19 (16,302 miles) and 7/15/20 (19,077 miles).

Hi Ken. Yes, you are correct that the IOLM has a 1 year/10,000 mile maximum time span. Our 2nd generation MKZ's have a 1 year/10,000 mile oil change interval (1st generation is 7,500 miles). Therefore, according to the Owners Manual, the IOLM illuminates ~14  days and/or ~500 miles before either of those two limits (maximum).

Therefore...If I have my oil changed today (8/9/20) and only drive my car 10 miles in the next year, the IOLM will still illuminate ~500 miles/~2 weeks before 8/9/21 to tell me it is time for an oil change.

Again...a maximum of 1 year/10,000 miles.

And as mentioned previously, The IOLM will take driving factors and environment into consideration. So therefore, if we wind up driving our cars under a "Severe Service" environment (as described in our Owners Manuals), the IOLM will warn that an oil change is due much sooner than 1 year/10,000 miles. That is the "Intelligent" part of the "Intelligent Oil Live Monitor".

This is all covered in our Owner Manuals. And everyone should check and verify the information in their own particular Owners Manual, since revisions can occur from model year to model year.

This was also why we asked pwcopy to look up and post the date and mileage of his last oil change. It was probably ~1 year previous, or somewhere shortly before 28,000 miles.

Good luck.

Therefore...If I have my oil changed today (8/9/20) and only drive my car 10 miles in the next year, the IOLM will illuminate shortly before 8/9/21 to tell me it is time for an oil change. I forget the day limit, but it is something less than 30 days. 1 year/10,000 miles.

Indeed.  We've had instances of members purchasing cars that had been in the dealer's inventory for nearly a year and having the oil change reminder come on soon after purchase, with very little mileage.  Theoretically, if a car sat for a year or more and had never been driven, the reminder would come on at startup.

Per our owners guides:

Quote

Do not exceed one year or 10000 miles (16000 kilometers) between service intervals.
