My 2020 leasing saga

Recommended Posts

During this past December, the leasing manager at my dealer, with whom I've been dealing many years, contacted me about ordering a 2020 MKZ.  The lease on my 2017 ends on 2/27, and he's aware that there's never a car in their inventory or locator that I'd want.  So armed with my X-Plan PIN, I went in near the end of December fully prepared to order.  I laid out what I wanted, and he went off to check the X-Plan pricing.  He came back with a funny look, so I knew I was in trouble.   Bottom line: it would be $100 more per month than I'm paying now.  Due to reconfiguration of standard equipment and packages, the MSRP of the 2020 and my 2017 are pretty close. In fact, the 2020 is less even though it has more equipment than my 2017  I was taken aback by this.  Why on Earth would I pay $100 more per month for basically the same car.  Do I have "schmuck" written on my forehead? This is with X-Plan and a whole host of incentives. There was no reasonable answer for that.  It is what it is.   At that point, I got up and left after telling him I had some soul-searching to do.

In the thread about what your next car would be, I'd mentioned the Genesis G70 Sport.   There's a Genesis dealer right up the road from me and when I discussed it with my son, he told me that his very good friend was the sales manager at a Hyundai/ Genesis dealer.   Later, he got back to me ad informed me that this dealer no longer sold Genesis, but he gave me the name of a friend of his at another dealer that does.  So  I made an appointment for a  test  drive.  I drove one equipped exactly as  I would want: Sport/AWD.  The Sport package includes the Elite and Prestige Packages, which can be had separately,  but it includes everything option you can get on this car.  All colors are no extra cost.  What a concept!  You also get 3 years of free maintenance.

I absolutely loved the car.  It’s a true sport sedan.   Rear-biased AWD that can send up to 90% of the power to the rear wheels, 4 different drive modes and Brembo brakes.  0-60 in 4.7 seconds and a 13.0 ¼-mile.  Plus a whole bunch of stuff like HUD, wireless phone charging, 360º camera, and a powered decklid that opens if you stand behind it for a certain amount of time with the fob on your person. No need to push the button if your hands are full.  What I didn’t like was the very tight back seat and tiny trunk and a couple of other things that didn't make sense. For instance, you can't remote start the car with the fob. You must use your smart phone.  This means taking out your phone, going to the app and going through sub menus.  I find that to be something of an inconvenience.  Sometimes I just want to push the 2 buttons on my fob.

After the test drive, we went back inside to talk.  The initial offer the sales guy made was just $6 less per month than the price for the MKZ was.  I went home and ruminated over all this for a few days.  I kept going back and forth comparing the pros and cons of the two cars.  The Genesis doesn't have a few things that I'd miss and the MKZ doesn't have some things that the Genesis has.  Finally, one Sunday afternoon in early January, I was sitting around and decided that I'd live without some things I've gotten used to on the MKZ in favor of what the G70 has to offer.  I was going to call the sales guy to see if he was in and if so, I'd head over there and negotiate in earnest.  As I was headed to the phone, it rings and guess what?  It's the Lincoln leasing manager.  He asks what I'd decided and I told him that I hadn't.  He says to forget about X-Plan and makes me an offer I can't refuse for the MKZ with everything I want.  So I accepted.

End of story: my 2020 MKZ has been built and shipped.  Silver Radiance (new color), Terra Cotta/Ebony interior, 3.0TT, Luxury package, Elements Package, Magnetic Package, which is standard with the 3.0.  ETA is the week of 2/23.  History repeats itself.  My 2006 Lincoln LS was the last of that line too. I've been abandoned by Lincoln for the last time, though, unless they pull some rabbit out of a hat and come out with a sedan based on the Explorer/Aviator RWD platform.  I'm not holding out a lot of hope for that.

Hi drolds. Congratulations on your 2020 MKZ! Happy to hear you will still be sticking around with us Lincoln MKZ guys for at least a while longer. I would have hated to lose you! ?

Good luck!

Very good playing the field to work out a deal in your favor. The patience and time taken to think a final decision over was a wise move.

There is no doubts a trade off between Genesis G70 and the MKZ as it is. The MKZ is the better all around daily choice because its got the weight and bigger size, which can benefit comfort better while still being powerful. The G70 is a lot more sporty and will out perform the MKZ in the long run, but that's not always the most important thing in choosing a car. G70's main weakness for daily driving is the backseats/trunk space is the main drawback unless one is a light load rider.

The direct Genesis sedan rival of the MKZ is the G80, which can have a V8 Naturally Aspirated 5.0 AWD in rear wheel format! Although will probably be phased out the coming year, as its rare to find one without a special order as its a really niche thing to desire nowadays. Plus the 3.3T is closer to the MKZ 3.0T, with Torque being more favorable to get moving faster off the line than a NA with steady growth.

Silver Radiance is sharp, akin to Iconic Silver on the Ford line vehicles. Best silver I've seen in my opinion, yet a shame it cannot be given the Black Monochromatic Package, as that would look so good. Looking forward to pictures!

The main thing holding me back from the G70 was the back seat.  My wife rode in the back for the test drive.  She's fairly tall for a woman of her generation (5'9") and she  looked very uncomfortable.  She had a real hard time getting out when we were done.  The MKZ isn't that spacious in the back but it's a limo compared to the G70.  My friend kept telling me to get the car that I want. and not to worry.  He asked me who was going to sit back there anyway.  I said, "your wife, for one".  The response would violate the rules here?   My grandsons would fit.  That's most important to me.   What it lacks in space, though, it makes up in style and quality of materials.  It has quilted Nappa leather  seating and a suede headliner.  It has the look and feel of a more expensive car.

I did consider the G80 Sport for a minute.  I'd sat in one at NY Auto Show and it was the one of the most comfortable cars I've sat in at any price.  Even the standard model starts at $3G more than the G70.  A G80 Sport approaches $60G.  The rear seats don't fold down.  That's a deal breaker for me.

I've never been a fan of silver cars but I saw an Aviator in the showroom in Silver Radiance and it really caught my eye.  I've seen a MKZ in this color few online in dealer ads but they all have black interiors.  I think mine will be unique with the Terra Cotta interior.

Question about he Terracotta... I think it's 'too' red , I wish it was more brown looking.... but it's just pics that I've seen... am I wrong?

Hi Multitask. drolds1 can answer in the first person, since he has the Ebony/Terracotta interior in his 2020. However, I have seen it in person and it looks brown to me.

Probably best if you can find one at Dealership that you can look at in person too.

Good luck.

Did I miss the pictures? I'd love to see your new beauty!

No.  You didn't.  I had issues posting the pics and never got back to trying after I got home from my last trip.  Then coronavirus kind of distracted me.

Here's on quick phone pic I took, but it doesn't really show the difference between the old Ingot Silver and this new Silver Radiance.

Congratulations Drolds1...I just  picked up my 2020 3.0 AWD fully loaded last Friday.. This is my 4 th MKZ (2013 Hybrid, 2015 3.7 FWD and 2017 3.0 AWD) Was not able to order one they stopped taking orders. The dealer found one close by with everything I wanted.. The only draw back was it has a Pano Roof not a big fan, but they gave me a deal that I could not refuse.. First thing I noticed was that the back window has less visibility and that's with the roof closed worse when opened .. Also the trunk has 2 arches that support the roof and therefore smaller. The only positive for me is that the doors have a more solid feel when closing  I assume that is because of all the roof support.... So I am all dressed up and no place to go.. I am going to take it on a quick freeway drive this weekend since the freeways here in LA or wide open ?

Congratulations to you as well!  What color is yours?

WRT the door feel, I think they did something with the seals on the 2020.  We've found that if you don't close a door quite firmly, they don't close completely.  I've come down to the garage a couple of times to find the driver's door ajar. This didn't happen on my 2014 or 2017.  Thank goodness for the battery saver?.   I'm not in the habit of locking the car in my garage, so I imagine that if I locked the car after parking outside, I'd get the double horn-honk to let me know something is open.

Dressed up and nowhere to go is right.  The car is a month old and has only 230 miles on it.  A good chunk of that was done the 2nd day I had it (pre-covid 19).

Got the Black on Black ( Last 2 MKZs had the Capuccino with the dark wood)  And yes I have found my door not fully closed.. I am very impressed with the sport tune suspension and the Torque Vectoring witch are part of the 3.0 AWD Reserve package.. They were desperate to sell me the car.. I went the day after Los Angeles was put on shutdown. This is the first time of buying a car that I agreed on a price and monthly payment and my sales guy came back out while I was adjusting my settings in my new car and got my payment down $ 20.00 with out asking... I am sure this is the last car this guy will be sell for quit a while....

Thanks.  It has what I'd call a brightness to it. Silver Radiance is a fitting name for it.  I was never a fan of silver but when I was in the Lincoln showroom, there was an Aviator in this color that really caught my eye and prompted me to ask what it was.  I was surprised at how much I liked it.  This random ad probably shows it off a little better than my phone pic.

That's nice, I like how the chrome around the lower grilles blends into it compared to my Black Pearl.

Edit, that's funny, Multi, we both were typing at the same time, and I wasn't trying to address your post since I hadn't seen it.

Would look very cool if you could plasti-dip all the chrome bits to black

The Monochromatic Package is available for 2020.

Mine has the black grille included with the Magnetic Package, which is standard equipment for 2020 when the 3.0 is ordered.  I only posted that pic above to illustrate the Silver Radiance paint.
