2014 MKZ Hybrid - Front Heated/Cooled Seat Failure

Hello everyone,

I've got a 2014 MKZ Hybrid, right at 121,000 miles. Very recently, the heated and cooled front seats stopped working. Usually, when I turn on the heated/cooling function, I could hear the fans turn on in the seats. I no longer hear that. Heated steering wheel and heated rear seats work fine. Sync Entertainment screen shows the front heated or cooled functions enabled when I turn them on. There are no error codes to be found on the entertainment screen or on the dash.

I checked already Fuse #65 in the lower engine compartment fuse panel, that fuse is good to go. My suspicion is the climate seat control module. The only thing is, I am having trouble identifying where it is. None of the parts I came across on eBay match what is underneath my seat. Some articles say it is located in the back of the upright part of the seat, some articles say it is located underneath the seat in the front.

Looking for suggestions, ideas, or diagrams. I would greatly appreciate some input on this. The attached photograph is what I see when looking underneath the seat from the front.

The climate controlled seat module is under the front passenger seat.

Removal

  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

NOTE: The PMI (programmable module installation) process must begin with the current SCME (front seat climate control module) installed. If the current SCME (front seat climate control module) does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool, the tool may prompt for As-Built Data as part of the repair.

Using a diagnostic scan tool, begin the PMI (programmable module installation) process for the SCME (front seat climate control module) following the on-screen instructions.

  1. Position the front passenger seat to the full upward and full rearward positions.

  • Remove the screws.
  • Release the locking wedges and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  • To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  • NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
  • Using a diagnostic scan tool, complete the PMI (programmable module installation) process for the SCME (front seat climate control module) following the on-screen instructions.

There are 2 issues I see with this. First and foremost: it may very well be the module but you don't know that for sure and may just be throwing (expensive) parts at it.  It could be a wiring issue. Next, the SM indicates that the new module must be programmed with an IDS tool.  How are you going to accomplish that?  IDK if this can be done with ForScan.  I'd get the codes read and go from there.

drolds1,  that is a massive help. Thank you.

One of my business associates is a service manager at a local Ford/Lincoln dealership. I'm certain that they could handle the programming aspect of it if it could not be done through ForScan. Fun fact, ForScan was able to code more and access more options than their factory scan tools. During my upgrade from Sync2 to Sync 3, they couldn't reprogram the APIM correctly, I ended up doing it myself via ForScan. Now, the heated seats did work just fine after this upgrade was completed. I will work from here and will update this thread when more information becomes available.

Just a guess, but if the cooled seat feature stopped working after the Sync2 to Sync3 update, then you may need to compare (I assume you have the compare tool) your As-Built data to another newer MKZ As-Built data that came with both Sync3 and cooled seats from the factory, to see if anything else needs changed with ForScan. The hard part maybe finding a newer VIN to download another data file.
