End of the MKZ?

It looks like the 2020 MKZ will  be the last.  My lease ends in February. If I do get a 2020, history will be repeating itself.  I had the last of the Lincoln LSes also.  2006.  My son had a 1998 Mark VIII LSC.  There seems to be a family pattern here.  As you can see from my screen name, I was a big Oldsmobile fan. i also had a Plymouth and several Mercury Sables.  It's a family tradition.  My grandfather, father and uncle had Hudsons.  Another uncle in PA always bought Nashes.

Should I decide to get a 2020 MKZ, I'll need to factory order at the end of this month.

I'm not surprised. CD4 platform is coming to its end. There has been no word or information from auto shows as of yet either.

If against driving a CUV/SUV, You may just have to do what other former Focus and Fusion buyers ended up doing: Going to other brands or finding a cheaper used one. I don't think Lincoln will go 100% CUV/SUV while dropping the MKZ completely, so 2021 reveal auto show should announce something for what is to come mid-late 2020. Mustang platform variant seems the most likely guess.

My Focus is still good for till 2021 July. Plenty of time and I'm going to ride it out until something really calls out to me. Sync 4 is supposed to show up in 2021 MY as well, which some people may not like because of its cloud focus nature.

Giving your best-selling model the axe doesn't seem like a great idea, slagging sedan sales or not. At some point SUV and crossover sales will slack off, and what happens then? A year ago Lincoln was saying they were committed to sedans, which was a mixed bag for me. For one thing, it was nice to hear, but for another.... Lincoln didn't seem terribly committed to sedans when they made that statement. You could refine the Mustang chassis a bit, stretch the wheelbase, and theoretically have a coupe, convertible, and sedan variant riding one model. An available V8 and rear drive would make the car somewhat comparable to entry BMW and Benz models, and cars like the Infiniti G series. Not to mention the mid-level Cadillacs. That idea seems like a no-brainer to everyone but Lincoln's upper management. Yes, the lack of an existing AWD option might be a stumbling block, but I'm convinced there will be an AWD Mustang at some point or another. That just seems to be the direction the market is heading.

Barring that... Ford of Europe might have a platform or two that might be suitable. Even the new Explorer chassis might be workable, though I'd see that being better for something more Continental-sized. Then again... the deal with Rivian has me intrigued. Cadillac and Infiniti have both expressed adding more electric vehicles, and I can only guess that Ford has similar ideas in mind with Lincoln. You could put practically any body that'll pass safety on a Rivian chassis. And since the Rivian chassis already exists, you'd only need to invest in a body and interior beyond any "parts bin" components you may or may not use.

Maybe the new Mustang-E would be a platform that Lincoln could use. It will be available in AWD also.

Just stumbled across this- looks like Lincoln may get a Rivian-based vehicle and a variant of the Mach E. The logic would be that the Mach E would be a lower-priced entry with the Rivian-based model being higher priced. And am I the only one hoping Ford changes it's mind about slapping the Mustang name on the Mach E? I mean I'm no nostalgic fool but come on...

The MKZ ended in 2017 when Lincoln changed the unique look of the 2013 - 16 model to the 2017 "old man's Lincoln" front , instead of evolving the 2013 /16 into something daring they went backwards .  I would have purchased the 2017 model until I saw what they did to it . So I traded my 2013 in for the last of the style 2016.  I am still very happy with my 2016 original Z , and had hoped Lincoln would  have moved its style forward , but it looks like the day of the sport sedan has been replaced with the different sizes of SUVs . The only way the Lincoln Z sedan could have survived is by being something special and the company did  not want to invest in this idea . No other car comes close to the look of my 2016 Z , you can easily spot it in the parking lot , a gem among the ordinary .

Hi Robert. Can only guess at this point. Can tell you that the last order date for the 2019 MKZ was ~ mid-late 4/19. So wild guess that the closing date for 2020 model ordering may be mid-late ~4/20. But that is just a wild guess.

Good luck.

To each his own, Jim. I MUCH prefer the look of the '17 to the droopy-nosed '16.

Hi jim. As longislander stated, "to each his own". And I agree with him.

My opinion? The 2013-2016 MKZ was nice. But it was not nice enough for me to buy one. However, after Lincoln's new design language was previewed on the Lincoln Continental concept vehicle in the 2015 NY Auto Show, I purposefully waited for the MKZ's mid-cycle refresh which came in 2016 for the 2017 model year. That MKZ refresh was actually the first production implementation of that front end design language. I much preferred the Jaguar-ish front end and grille to the split-wing. So I purchased my 2018.

I have no problem admitting something looks nicer than what I may have. My first MKZ was a 2007, yet I thought the 2010-2012 mid-cycle refresh was a nicer looking car, both inside and out. And the 2013-2016 was much nicer looking than either of those models, both inside and out. And I obviously thought the 2017--present was nicer looking than all of those, inside and out. So I factory ordered my 2018 Reserve 3.0T AWD.

But again, that is only my personal preference. I am not putting down the 2013-2016. It is a very nice car.  And I could have bought one earlier...but I prefer my 2018.

More important than all of this?  I hope Lincoln does not abandon cars like the Ford division is doing. I hope they will redesign both the MKZ (although it will be renamed if they do) and Continental, and give us car lovers something to keep us in the Lincoln family. I do not want a CUV or SUV, even if it is a Lincoln.

Again, just my opinions, which are only worth what opinions are worth. ?

Good luck to us all. ?

Lincoln hasn't officially announced that the MKZ is going out of production, so that isn't known.  If it's a full year of production, that usually ends around June.   However, they could decide to have a shortened MY and end production before that. The last 2006 Lincoln LSes were built in April of that year.

Thank you...that should work out for me to order .. I think it was 8 -9 weeks on my 17 ..

HI Robert. Let me add some information. I gave you the last order date for the 2019 MKZ, and extrapolated that out to a possible last order date for the 2020 as being mid-late April 2020. However, just because I always factory order does not mean everyone else does.

So some added info: The last build date for the 2019 MKZ was 8/3/19. So you can loosely extrapolate that out to the possibility that the last build date for the 2020 MKZ may be in early August 2020. That probably fits your schedule a bit better if your lease is up 9/17/20 and you are not factory ordering.

And as drolds1 also correctly pointed out, a 2021 model year MKZ has not yet been ruled out by Lincoln/Ford.

Good luck.

Looks like the 2021 MKZ has been Kianapped, and shared a cell with a Dodge Charger. Man o' man...

What I dread is losing my Lincoln customer service by completely leaving Ford however. Even with my Focus, I take it to my Lincoln dealer just to support services.

I hope the 2021 Lincoln shapes the sedans up...or bring new ones.

Sadly, not surprised to see this article pop up after all this time.

Time to pack it up and plan for a different brand from here on, if you want a sedan.

Come with me to Alfa Romeo! We got the Stelvio for the wife last year and love It. I now have a Giulia on order. You can customize from sportier variants to more luxury focused.

I loved my MKZ and wanted a Lincoln coupe or at a minimum a refreshed MKZ, but Ford sadly went another direction.

The Alfa’s are different from the German competition and have amazing handling without riding rough. The Giulia runs 0-60 in 4.6 seconds! Check it! Lol.

On another note, this forum has been great! There are a lot of wonderful people who have been a pleasure to converse with online. I have enjoyed my time here and will miss all.

The design and performance are great, but you need to be tolerant of quality issues with these new Alfas.

I hear you. Knock on wood, our Stelvio has been trouble free since taking delivery in the summer.

I was really pleased with the quality of my MKZ. It has held up great over three years. The 3.0T engine is still silky smooth and powerful after being tuned and driven sportingly along the way.
