2019 MKz annoyances

So my new 2019 MKz 2.0T FWD had just turned 5,000 miles and overall it’s a great car!

That being said, I have found several build annoyances that I’m surprised Ford/Lincoln hadn’t noticed pre-production or has not addressed in later years. It’s not like they just started building cars. Anyone else find this stuff poorly engineered?

Poor center console fit/finish

The pop-up doors on my console don’t sit evenly with the surrounding trip. The forward compartment sticks up too high and the cup holder door isn’t level with the left side bezel.  I don’t see any type of adjustment for them either. Also, the metal top material of the console gets really cold in the winter time and takes a long time to warm up, even when you rest your arm on it.

Volume/Temp visual indicator

When adjusting the radio volume or the temperature a huge round circle appears with the number. This is too bright at night and doesn’t need to be that massive.

Side mirror turn indicators

The signal indicator wraps too far around the housing and can be seen by the driver when looking at the mirrors. This wouldn’t be a problem if the BLISS indicator wasn’t the same amber color. I find it confusing when signaling to turn and seeing the blind spot detection illuminate at the same time. I might have to paint or tap off the signal portion.

Trunk top panel

The black aluminum panel on top of the trunk lid collects water in the seems after a wash or heavy rain. When the trunk is opened, the water pours into the trunk on the passenger side.

Window switch position

The drivers side window switches are too far forward on the door. I believe my arms are in normal proportion, but I often operate the rear windows by accident.

Revel subwoofers

Obviously 6x9 speakers aren’t ideal for true subwoofers, but having an independent “sub” level control in addition to high/mid/low audio settings would have been a nice feature. I can’t even tell if my subs are functioning. On the plus side, the rest of the 14-speaker Revel system sounds very good.

2.0T engine noise

For the first couple hundred miles the engine was quiet, however the exhaust has gotten nosier, which is probably normal due to carbon buildup, water vapor and rust. Now it sounds like the typical 4-banger. The engine idle seems noisy like diesel and is almost embarrassing. Not sure if it's the valve train or direct fuel injectors that I'm hearing. I don't think it's a mechanical issue,  I was just hoping it would have been quieter when approaching the vehicle after a remote start.

I'm still glad I own the car, but felt it necessary to document these issues and see if anyone else thinks the same.

Whoa, I don't like the engine noise comment - "Now it sounds like the typical 4-banger". I'm thinking of a 2.0T in my next vehicle. Others with similar noise concerns?

Hi Mcondo. Take all Internet opinions, whether good, bad, mine or others, with a grain of salt.

Go to your local Lincoln Dealers, drive a few for yourself and decide for yourself.

Let us know what you decide and good luck.

It’s an older review, but check out this Motorweek episode. Even they complain the 2.0T is noisy.

The good part is it has plenty of power. Only tachs around 2K at 65-70mph. Has good torque, without lots of down shifting. I average 31mpg on my mostly highway commute.

All my other daily drivers have been V6’s. I suppose I’m just not used to 4 cylinder sound. I do a lot of my own maintenance, so I shy’d away from the hybrid. The 3.0T would’ve been awesome, but shoe horned in there, more complicated and a little too thirsty for my commute.

If you do test drive a few MKZ’s, see if they have a higher mileage one on the lot. I test drove mine with only 5 miles and it was pretty much perfect then.

My center  console was fine until they replaced the APIM and had to remove it and re-install. After that, it was way out of alignment in about every way. I complained, and they took a look and determined that it was out of spec and replaced the doors. It is much better now, but still not close to perfect.

As far as noise from the 2.0, I have had a few 2.0 loaners, and I thought it was a great engine, and didn't notice it being noisy. However, I love my 3.0. It gets around 17 in town and around 28 on the interstate.

I had a 2.0 Turbo in my 2013 MKZ and never noticed any excessive noise.

I do agree on the window switch position is too far forward in the MKZ, I too finding myself to this day opening the rear window when I want the front but I do keep my driver seat to the extreme rear. I noticed better positioned in loaners of other Lincoln models.

The 2014 I current have has different controls and Sync system so I do not experience the volume circle but have had loaners that worked this way, never noticed that they seemed "too big and bright"

You can download one of these...   https://play.google.com/store/search?q=sound%20meter&c=apps&hl=en

It won't be exactly spot on, but close enough to be repeatable and is something you can use to compare other cars with.  Take it to your Lincoln dealer and take a spin in your version of a new car and see what you get.

If nothing else you can put a number on "it's loud" or "excessive".
