2012_MKZ_KC Posted November 7, 2019 Share Posted November 7, 2019 Hi All, I just passed 60,000 miles on my 2012 MKZ and I had a leak (black). I took it to the dealer and they told me that "The PTU was leaking from the vent." They said it would be about $3000 to replace it. At this point, I have decided I am going to get a new car because I have had multiple problems this year totaling almost $6000 with the PTU leak and I decided I am not going to put anymore money into this car. It has been two months since I was first told about this and the mechanic said I would be okay driving in it for "a little while." I am concerned that there is a safety issue or a chance of damaging the car more if I continue to drive with the leak, or if the fluid runs out as it appears that the car only holds about 12 oz of the fluid. I cannot figure out how to check the fluid myself. I realize that if the fluid runs out and the parts that need to be lubricated are not being lubricated it will cause more wear and tear on the AWD unit, but I am concerned that the system will lock up on me while I am driving causing a life threatening situation. What are the consequences if the fluid runs out before I can get the car traded in? I am trying to decide if I want to go to an 2nd opininon appointment that I scheduled on Friday to make sure the fluid isn't getting dangerously low, but they will charge me $99 and I am not sure if it is worth it or not. drolds1 Posted November 7, 2019 Share Posted November 7, 2019 Too late now but if you're at 60K, the PTU fluid should have been changed 30K miles ago, despite what Ford says. Be that as it may, $3G is absurd to replace the unit. It should be around half of that. It actually holds about a quart of fluid. You have to get under the car to check the level. It only has a fill plug which has to be removed in order to check the level. See this video. I understand, however, that you don't want to spend any more money on the car. Therefore, I suggest you pull the fuse for the AWD, which will cause the car to become FWD only. This should get you by long enough to get rid of the car.
