Rear Shock Replacement - 13+

Buckle up - pics to come.

First - the MKZ has an electronic suspension, its expensive, and so far no aftermarket parts are available.

At the time I'm writing this, RockAuto has the best price for the rears.

Part #s:

AD1115 - 2x needed - Shock mount (suggested to replace when doing this)

ASH85976 - Rear Left

ASH24651 - Rear Right

Price at time of writing for above + shipping/tax - $531.31

Dealer wanted $1200+ with labor.

Local indy shop wanted $1000 with labor.

Tools:

Plastic snap tool pliers/flat head screw driver

19MM - Lug nuts

18MM - Top shock bolts

15MM - Bottom of shock bolts

15mm - Wrench (to remove shock mount nut from shock).

FYI - rear shock on the right went bad, didn't know - tire started bouncing and is now badly cupped.

I did not end up taking photos - the lugnuts were swollen - I spent more time getting tires off than actually doing the rear shocks.  This is a pretty simple job.  The dealer who just recently rotated the tires apparently broke one of the wheelstuds loose, so I couldn't remove one tire, I was still able to swap the shock without removing the tire, though it was a bit more difficult.

Steps:

Jack/support vehicle.

Put slight pressure under the coil area of the rear suspension with a jack while working on it.

Remove the two top shock bolts

Remove the two bottom shock bolts

Remove the electronic shock harness (I rolled under rear of vehicle to do this).

Pry the harness mount points out (plastic snaps that hold the wiring in place).

Remove shock

Remove shock mount

Remove the boot/dust cover from shock, put them on new shock

Put new shock mount on new shock, reinstall 15mm nut

Install is reverse of removal.

Here is 90k mile shock (both looked like this).

Car drives 100x better already.

Did you have to have the suspension system recalibrated?

Hi smsriker. Welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum. The OP has not been active since 11/2019, so I will try and answer your question: Not sure what you are referring to when you say "recalibrated". However, if you are asking if the vehicle should have an alignment performed after replacing struts/shocks, the answer is yes.

Good luck.

Hey bbf - I believe he's referring to a "ride height sensor calibration" that is noted in the service manual. I'm also curious if this is something that is really necessary.

Hi Molinski. You may be correct. However, the only way to know for sure would be for them to post back. Unfortunately, neither member has been active for ~1 year plus.  Perhaps they will see this and do so.

Good luck.
