NEW SYNC3 NAV map update!

Downloaded the files again, and put them on another USB drive.  Both USB drives have the exact same files, so I didn't forget anything on the first round of downloads.  I got the error msg BGMAP_ERR01 again  (2nd picture from my previous post), which is caused by "USB stick is still inserted into SYNC after installation is complete", so it is showing that the update was completed after all.  No idea why the "INSTL_ERROR 14"  was displayed yesterday.  

 

Screen says NA 1 18 Maps, so I'm done.

Hi fusionff. LOL...I saw in your photos that your map version showed as NA 1 18, but didn't mention it because I assumed you were having some sort of issue anyway. Next time I'll ask. lololololol

It's a joke that map just released in 3Q2019 says it only contains information from 1Q2017 to 1Q2018. Over $100 bucks to buy a map that is already over a year old... No thanks. I'll stick to Waze community-based maps that are fresh and free.

This is all insane, on multiple levels. I paid a little extra around 8 or more years ago for a Garmin "stick on your windshield" GPS with "free" lifetime updates included for life. I share it on a Pontiac Solstice (no nav option available in '07) 2 motorcycles and my company van (program build-no nav option) If I go a year without thinking to update it, a message comes up on the screen notifying me it's been a year since last update, and an "OK" soft touch button also appears to dismiss the message. To update the unit, I simply plug the unit into my laptop with the included USB cord and go to the Garmin website. The GPS is recognized and smacking one mouse click begins the install. It took less than 15~20 minutes a few months ago for a full update, and when it tells you it's 100% complete it is!   It's disheartening to know Ford either couldn't or wouldn't design a vehicle under the Lincoln nameplate with a nav feature that matches an almost decade old unit that cost under $300 at Best Buy.

When I was looking into the Genesis G70, I learned that 3 years of complimentary map updates is included.

GPS factory installed units are seldom worth what they charge for them after they require the first "paid for after the fact" update.  That Genesis that DrOlds mentioned is an example of a company attempting to make their Nav more attractive.  I have Nav in a Ford Pickup, and in my Goldwing Motorcycle.  I have given up on the Ford for updates, and I hacked the Goldwing in order to keep it up to date.  For all other purposes, I have a "truckers" Garmin with seven inch screen with lifetime updates, which will also end when the files get too big for the 8GB interior memory.  That is what lifetime means, apparently, as all my older GPS units, Tom Tom, Garmin and Magellan have all ceased to update due to the size of the maps and the limits of the memory.  Having spent quite some time in the Army, I value GPS very much, but still know how to use maps.  The first GPS units we had were the size of briefcases, and still were only accurate to within about three miles.  We have come a long way since the late 1960s/early 1970s with this tech and the accuracy of it.  Triangulating back then meant exactly that - 3 satellite read.  Now they use 12.

 

To cut this short - given the choice, I will not pay for GPS factory units.  Portables are so much more updateable.

I have and use the internal maps when I'm in an area that there is no cell service.  Then Google Maps or Waze the rest of the time.

The 1-18 maps are the most recent, but they will be about 2-3 years behind.  when 1-19 is released the same will apply just a year or 2 later maps... ?

Pretty sure we all know how to use a map, but how many accidents "back in the day" were caused by jackholes driving while folding & refolding a map, and squinting to make out interchange numbers and small road names? Then they get interrupted by a thud when they piledrive your Wing? Maps don't put a little arrow up in a corner with what direction you go next, and the exit number, or count down the miles before the event so you can decide when it's time to possibly sit behind a slower vehicle to be in the proper lane. 

Are you sure about the insufficient memory thing keeping you from updating? I have an 8+ year old Garmin Nuvi 2460LMT, one of the better ones at the time but certainly not a trophy. The last time I went to update it, I was surprised when it said I had insufficient memory (I usually do, but the Garmin's memory was news to me) and to insert a 4GB or 8GB (can't remember) or greater MicroSD card. I happened to have a 16GB handy, so I made sure it was blank and used it. I didn't even know there WAS an empty slot for an SD card all these years, but sure enough, the GPS had been using whatever internal memory it was built with, and had provision to add additional memory in the side without having to even remove a single screw. After I installed the SD, I re-clicked the "start update" on my laptop and it never mentioned anything about memory, just updated the Garmin like always except for taking a little longer than usual. Pretty sure it was less than 30 minutes, and the included short USB patchcord also powers the unit during updates, so no worries about starting out with a fully charged Garmin.

You would be amazed at how many people cannot use a map, but the ramifications you mention are truer than heck.  Also, you have stated very nicely the reasons that I really like GPS units.

 

The Garmin dezl 760 LMT I have does have an SD card slot, but with it, I do not yet need a card.  It has lots of memory going into the future.  The Tom Tom and old Garmins and the Magellan had no sd slots.  They would update, but only with a truncated map (part of the U.S., or Canada, but not all) for a couple of years, and then no longer at all.  They are probably all older than your Nuvi.  The Nuvi is quite sophisticated compared to some of the older units.

Thanks, seems like I bought it 100 years ago, time does fly. When mine told me I needed more memory, I forgot that I was also offered the option of just updating certain regions. I don't recall if that would have started over after dropping the other regions. That would have been a hard choice,

A)having parts of all US & Canada out of date, or

B)only having some of the on the unit at all, but those that were on it would be current.

I would have gone with, "C-None of the above" and bought a newer Garmin that would be expandable memory-wise if needed. Still le$$ than constant updates to the OEM MKZ built-in, and transferable when I no longer have the MKZ.

I wonder if Ford has anyone left in the car division that realizes folks who buy a premium nameplate will be reluctant to continue if the neighbor kid's new Hyundai starts to look like superior engineering.

I wonder what's involved when it does need an update? Hopefully it's a simple wifi download or memory chip upload and not the hour-long drive procedure I'm reading here for the MKZ.

Genesis is still using SD cards, so it's apparently pretty simple.  They use the same system from the regular Hyundais and have been criticized for that, but it works well.  In light of their philosophy of constant improvement, I suspect there will be an upgrade to the Genesis infotainment systems in the not-to-distant  future.  They do respond quickly to customer input.

I didn't catch all the details, or who's "top 5" quality survey it was, but they were talking about how Genesis had pushed Lexus out of the #1 spot. Lincoln & Cadillac weren't in the top 5, but it was mentioned that some brands had suffered greatly because of poor survey results on electronics/audio/NAV. That sounds like Ford/GM to the letter ;(

If Hyundai has a top notch NAV system, I'd be pissed if I bought a Genesis product that didn't have the same one. Just put a nicer frame around it ?

Since Ford and other mfrs have no problem paying audio companies to to supply systems and display their names (Harmon/Kardon, and Bose in my old Caddy, etc. perhaps the Lincoln division could farm out the NAV to Garmin, and put the current engineering crew on interior wood and console lid(s) alignment?

Ford's problems with infotainment stem from early MFT (Sync2).   Sync3 has been praised by most reports, even CR.  I don't have any complaints with Sync3 in my 2017 and 2020.  That said, if the Lincoln dealer hadn't called me with a screamin' deal on the 2020 MKZ as I was getting ready to head to the Genesis dealer, I'd probably be driving a G70 today.

My problem is seriously outdated maps, in my '17, which I'm apparently supposed to pay to update during an hour+ drive, to have modestly outdated maps? I have less than 20k miles on the car right now, so I will not even consider a new one for a while.

I agree with that.  Like these cars don't cost enough. The sticker price of my 2020 is about what I originally paid for my house.  It should be a perk for Lincoln owners.  Seriously, how much can it really cost them?

I'm lucky that my 2020 has 1-18 , but I use AA for up to date maps... for the 2017, one would have hoped that they would have allowed 3 years of free updates.... heck they paid for 6 years of Traffic from Sirius... sheesh...

By all means, please post the website for us 2017 owners with the original NAV info. I have read in several places that only 2018 and up get a free upgrade, so if that is incorrect I'd love to know. To be fair, I haven't contacted my dealer on this. I figured I'd hold that in reserve for future goodwill, you know, first time I have to bring the car in for something non-warranty, ask if I could get a NAV update au gratis or at cost while I use my own wallet for whatever the car needs. In some respects, it's not even the money, it's the inconvenience and supposed voodoo ritual/rain dance needed to do a successful update on a ¼ tank of gas ☺. TIA!

Hi MKZ. It did not quite register in my mind that you were discussing a 2017. So you may be right. However, try the website to see if your 2017 qualifies for the complementary update. Dealers can charge for NAV map and SYNC3 updates.

I can not swear to what 2017 owners are entitled to. The information I have available stated that SYNC3 NAV owners were entitled to 1 complementary NAV maps update from the website. If you ask your Lincoln Dealer to perform the update, whether to charge you or not is at their discretion, just as it is for SYNC3 updates. We can download them and do it ourselves, or ask the Dealer to do it. If we ask the Dealer, they can charge us if they wish to.

 

Also, I do not know if that complementary NAV update must be performed while still within the Bumper to Bumper Warranty or not.

We can download them and do it ourselves, or ask the Dealer to do it. If we ask the Dealer, they can charge us if they wish to.

So I looked up my ESN (yes the one below the Gracenotes), and after entering these I got this error

 

InvalidModelYear(<2010): The vehicle’s model year is not eligible for a Sync 3 map update.
