Clunky Shifting & "Dead" Spot

OK, so I have a couple of things that have been bugging me on my 2017 3.0 AWD that I want to see if others are also noticing.

 

1. Sometimes when I let off the gas, I get a clunk. I suspect that it may be at the same time it is shifting. Or, slack in the drive line maybe related to AWD? Also, when mostly shifting into 3rd, it seems to rev up a bit and then slow back into gear. I mentioned this at the dealer, and they said it was normal. Really? 

 

2. From a standing stop, I often get a bit of a hesitation or maybe a dead spot. I can sometimes notice it when stepping on it during a downshift. I mentioned this at my dealer, and they said it was due to the fuel system needing to be cleaned and of course had an expensive cleaning process. I can't remember how much it was, but I think it was around a hundred bucks. I did run some Techron in a tank, and that seemed to help but it was temporary.

 

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Should I go back to the dealer, or maybe another one, and have it checked out?

I tried a different brand of gas for the last fillup, and that seems to have really helped with the "dead spot". I was using Costco 91, and just filled up with QT 91. Both are top tier fuels.

Scott, I have a 2014, 3.7L AWD (non-turbo 300 hp)

I have tried BP 87 and 89 each for about a month.

87 was terrible. 89 was better but, I still had some issues of the type you mention.

When I went to BP 93 (my station does not have 91) all the little issues went away.

I have a 2017 3.0 AWD as well.  If you let off the throttle in the middle of a shift, you will get that clunk as the PCM tries to catch up with the mixed signals.  IDK about the "flare" of the 2-3 shift.  I'll take note of mine and check it out.  I think I would have noticed something like that but I'll double-check.

This engine is very sensitive to heat.  I get that hesitation in the summer unless it's running on premium fuel.  Also note that if you're a little exuberant with the throttle on takeoff, with 400 lb.-ft. of torque, you can easily induce wheelspin and TC will kick in.  This cuts power and will give you the feel of a hesitation.

Do not let the dealer run any fuel system cleaner through the intake.  It is not recommended by Ford and could be harmful to your turbos. See this video.

I had it in to the dealer for the same thing. Said they could not duplicate it. Almost inferred I was the issue. Sometimes I hit the gas from stop and nothing happens, just slow forward motion. Pretty dangerous potentially.

My 2.0 does that at a traffic circle where I need to dart in. The solution is Sport mode, it keeps the turbo spooled up and she jumps out nicely.

How many miles s re on it? Is it in sport when you hear this. If it's sport it could be a bad bushing if not it could be a bad PTU TAKE IT TO THE DEALER LINCOLN DEALER

It has about 28K now. It does the clunk in any mode. I have found that it is between the 1-2 shift, and usually happens when letting off the gas about the same time it is ready to shift. Of course, the warranty has expired due to time. It does have an extended warranty, but at this point I think I will just deal with it.

HI Scott. Has your 6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty also expired? If not, have the Dealer take a look at the car.

 

My advice/opinion: The issue will only get worse. Therefore, whether using the Powertrain Warranty or an Extended Warranty that covers the transmission, I would recommend having it looked at.
