mkz hybrid

I got an MKZ in November that included moon roof and navigation packages for about $37.9k The car has performed as advertised, although the mileage has been about 35 in the cold weather. Handles well, even in the snow, reasonably peppy, and very quiet, with smooth ride, but not too mushy.

I am glad you like the Hybrid. Live in Va beach, so I am averaging about 38 mpg in the warmer weather (40-50's)

I'm looking to buy a hybrid vehicle and the MKZ caught my eye with a claimed 45mpg fuel consumption.  I tested two 2013 MKZs at two different dealers and both had extremely low mpg average.  I remember one having around 18mpg while the other had 20mpg.  I find it impossible to believe the explanation that I was given:  it takes about 2k-3k miles before the car will perform at the advertised 45mpg rate.  Why would I get 18mpg when the car is brand new and then shoot out to 45mpg when the car gets ... older?!!!  Also, what is this "car-need-to-reset-after-3kmiles-before-reaching-45mpg" explanation?!!!  Does anyone know of a logical, technical explanation why a brand new MKZ will only get 18mpg when new, rather than the advertised 45mpg?  I really don't want to get a car that claims 45mpg to only get mpg in the 30's.  I know the driving style influences the mpg but still, I can't believe the MKZ will actually get to 45mpg.  From the posts here, I see people getting less than 40mpg which is less than stellar considering Lincoln's claim of 45mpg.

Any explanation (logical, please!) would be appreciated.

For true owner fuel mileage discussions, check out the http://www.FordFusionHybridForum.com.  You'll get some better feedback since that site is specifically for Hybrids.  After that, come back here and tell us what you read/learned.

Not chasing you away, but since these cars have very similar, you'll get a much wider audience.

I have the 2013 hybrid and I'm getting 45 mpg Avg in my first week. Key is how you accelerate and coast.

Today I actually got 49.1 mpg on the way home from work. As I learn how to drive it more efficiently I see my mpg improve. The ride was 30 miles mix of clear highway and minor traffic slow downs.

The car does perform as advertised, key is driving it to maximize efficiency.

My current trip summary with a fill up on Sunday (it's now Thursday night)is 278.2 miles, 45.3 mpg, 158.5 EV miles and 6.14 gallons of gas used.

My commute depending on which route I take is between 30 miles and 34 miles. Only about 4 miles are back roads, rest are highway miles.

WOW - 45 MPG is awesome!  As I've been reading on other forums, driving a Hybrid has everything to do with how you actually drive it.

Congrats!  You should post your experience in the new MKZ Hybrid section :)

Thanks Robert, I'm going to have to finally fill up tomorrow after 9 days and about 510 miles on my first fill up, and its not even broken in yet! It's totally all about how you drive it. If you drive it like a conventional gas vehicle, you wont get the mileage, if you take the time to learn your car and drive it right, you will get what its rated at or better.

I love this car. People kept saying how I was crazy for trading in my BWM for the MKZ hybrid, I laugh as they are on the way to the gas station lol

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but if you are figuring your mpg by watching the dash readout, you may be getting false info.  In several thousand miles, my 2013 MKZ hybrid has regularly been getting about 1.5 to 2.5 mpg less than the dash readout when I hand calculate at each fillup.  I always reset the dash readout with each fillup.  My lifetime summary is now reading 40.0, and that readout may be close to accurate since I usually get between 38 and 41 mpg per tank by hand calculation.

I'm very satisfied with the car, including the gas mileage, but wish the dash figure was more accurate.  I have a 2011 Mustang GT and the dash mpg readout is very accurate.

I have a logical explanation. (My MKZ had that simmilar low lifetime mileage when I purchased Iit from the dealership). The cars at the dealerships get shown to many people. A lot of short test drives (which hurts avg mileage), but the real killer to the mileage is when the salesmen show the car by just getting sitting in the car, with the car on, and not driving it. Heating and airconditioning the interior takes a large amount of energy.

Remember, even when the car is sitting and running on the battery, it still is hurting the overall mileage. Because remember how that battery got charged -- yeap, by the engine running - which of course takes energy.

There is a break-in period where you'll get much less mileage than the advertised 45/45/45.  I've owned Prius twice, and they both got far below advertised mileage for the first 3-4K miles.  I've only got < 300 miles on my new MKZ Hybrid, but I'll report what kind of mileage I'm getting after 4,000 miles.

Also, it's a good idea to form fuel-efficient driving habits.  That's a whole other subject.
