2016 MKZ Base 2.0T FWD: OK, I know the horn sounds twice if you exit the vehicle with the engine running, which is annoying enough, but it's been sound when I exit the car and close the door when the engine is off. How the hell do I shut all these idiotic sounds off. It's already gone of 3 times this quiet afternoon. I'm sure my neighbors are thrilled. Many thanks for your help, PW

Hi pwcopy.  Welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum.  I realize you understand what you are asking, but at least to me, your post is a bit unclear ("...but it's been sound when I exit the car..." ?). Could you be a little clearer as to what sounds you are referring to, where your keys are at the time etc?

As far as the horn honking when you exit the vehicle with the engine running: That is necessary, due to the push button start system. Otherwise, inattentive drivers would far too often be leaving their cars with the engine running and the keyfob in their pockets. That could be deadly in a home with an attached garage or similar situations (even with a timed shut-off).

Concerning the car making noises when you exit with the engine off: The car should not be making any sounds when you exit the car, engine off, keys in hand/pocket etc. Unless you press a keyfob button or keyless entry keypad buttons.  And what is "going off" three times that would aggravate your neighbors?

If you are getting two beeps when you press the lock button on the keyfob, that means something is not closed.  Could be a door, the trunk, hood etc.. if everything is closed, you may have another issue that needs diagnosis and repair. But as I said earlier, your post is a bit confusing.

In the meantime, your Owners Manual explains all the entry/exit alert and warning sounds and how to enable/disable those that are programmable, through the Drivers Information Center.

If you do not have your Owners Manual, you can download a PDF copy on the Lincoln Owners website: https://owner.lincoln.com/tools/account/how-tos/owner-manuals.html

Get back to us to clarify your previous post and good luck.

What is "going off" is the damn horn blasting whenever I exit the car without shutting off the engine. What does that have to do with remote start? I've owned a dozen vehicles in 46 years of driving, any one of which could have been left running due to lack of attention. I guess there must be morons out there who remote start their vehicles in a closed garage? At any rate, I frequently get out of my vehicle with the engine running, and I don't need it to remind me that the engine is on. I'll review the manual. Thank u.

It does that when you keep the key fob in your pocket and exit the vehicle. Leave the key in the car (as you've done in the previous dozen vehicles in 46 years I assume) and it won't honk at you. Or you could also just shut off the vehicle when you leave the car.

Hi pwcopy.  No one mentioned "remote start" and I was not referring to the remote start at all. However, what was confusing was you had also mentioned noises your car was making when you get out of the car "when the engine is off". You stated, "...but it's been sound when I exit the car and close the door when the engine is off. How the hell do I shut all these idiotic sounds off."  That is what was confusing to me.  So I advised you that your car should not honking or beeping if you turn the engine off and get out.

To make my previous post clearer, I referred to the push button (or keyless) start system, not the remote start system.  The start system using a "keyfob", starter button and brake pedal, instead of a key turned in the ignition.

Yes, you and many of us owned cars for many years in which we had a key that we had to insert in the ignition and turn to start the car. And we essentially could not accidentally get out of the car with the keys in our pockets and the car running, because we had to turn the engine off before we could take the key out of the ignition and put it in our pocket. Now, with puch button start systems, it is easier for people to forget their car is running and get out of the car with the keyfob in their pocket.

That is what I was discussing when I mentioned people leaving their cars running in a garage.  Because now someone can pull into their garage and get out of the car with their keyfob in their pocket/pocketbook and the engine still running.  Something that could not be done in the last 46 years, until more recently.  And yes, people have accidentally died and/or killed others by doing it. So whether we like it or not, the horn honk is  a safety feature. Yes, due to the absent mindedness of some people and our lawsuit happy society.

I have a 2018 MKZ and have not looked in my Owners Manual to see if that warning can be disabled. In my case, it does happen enough to bother me or my neighbors that much.  Maybe another Lincoln MKZ Forum member has checked their Owners Manual for that particular programming and will jump in to tell you if it is possible. Or if I have the time to check my manual, or scroll through the Driver Information Center, I will post back.  In the meantime, if you look and find the answer, please let us know.

There may even be a way to do it with an OBDII reader and the ForScan software, but that would entail spending money for those items.

Or you can do as mav2 stated above. Either leave the keyfob in the car with the engine running as you did with keys for 46 years, or turn the car off.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

There is a way to disable the horn honking by doing the Forscan bit.  Here is a link to a tutorial:

http://www.2gfusions.net/showthread.php?tid=4573

I know nothing about how it's done, but remember seeing it.

Here is a list of what can be done.  That double honk is in there.

As an aside, I am one of those morons.  However, I have a detached garage with garage doors and windows that haven't closed completely since the day it was built, which was almost 40 years ago.  So CO buildup isn't really something I need to worry about.

Thanks for the  help everybody. I will learn to leave the fob in the car. I never leave my cars running in the garage, so I never thought of the safety hazard.

Hi pwcopy.  Just to add to what Chris said about the ability to disable the double honk, using an OBDII reader and the ForScan software: I had a chance to quickly look through the  Drivers Information Center on my MKZ, and while it is possible I missed it, I did not find any programmable setting.

Unless there is something in the Owners Manual, I think an OBDII reader/ForScan software...or adapting and living with it as you stated...might be your only options.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

It's kind of like having the TPMS sensors.  Just because some people can't maintain their tire pressure without some type of warning lights s0936.gif,  we all have to have these tire pressure sensors in our damn tires.  Some people can't remember to shut their car off s1001.gif, so now we have these 'reminder honks' thanks to them.

Some people simply don't deserve to own and drive a car.  t2636.gif

It's not just the safety hazard issue.  I know of at least two incidents in which the person who had the key fob in their possession was a passenger who got dropped off somewhere and left with the fob in their pocket or purse and the driver unknowingly took off with no way to restart the car when they shut it off.  The MKZ does display a warning in the IC in this instance, however, that you have 20 seconds to restart the car without the fob present.

Anyway, it's two quick honks of the horn.  It's not that big of deal, IMO.  It's not like the horn is blaring for any length of time.

I avoid the horn honks by not completely closing the driver's door, but instead slowly closing it and stopping just before it latches. I imagine a very strong gust of wind could blow the door open, but I haven't had any problems.

Another thing that usually works, if you'll be staying close to the car like when helping a passenger exit or grabbing something from the trunk, is holding the keyfob up to the pillar behind the driver's door (by the keyless entry) while closing the door. But then if you step too far away from the car you'll get the honks.
