Timing cover removal in car?

I have looked everywhere with no answer. I have seen youtube videos with people removing the timing cover in the car, but they all seem to skip showing the step of them removing the cover in the car. Is there a simple step that you have to do to be able to remove the cover in the car? I need to get into the water pump so I can install my new one. I also want to replace the oil pump and timing components while I have it apart. I don't want to have to pull the engine, but it is looking that way to me at this point. Any help of how to get the cover out will help greatly. it is loose and I just need to be able to find the trick to pull it out of there. Thanks.

So how did this turn out for you and are there any tricks or knowledge you could pass along to help me out? I'm about to endeavor into the same project.

Hi JBM and welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum. If you let us know the model year of your MKZ (and engine, if it is a 2013+) someone may be able to help you. I realize by your profile information that you may have a 2008, but members often miss that, over there in little print on the left. ?

The OP has not been back since the day after they posted their original question (3/24/19), so you may not get an answer from them.

Good luck.

I have a 2009 with about 110,000 miles I am considering replacing the water pump as a preemptive repair.

Up until this point I've done all the repairs on the car (albeit not many) myself and as long as I don't have to drop the engine and cradle out the bottom of the car as I do not have access to a lift.   I'm otherwise comfortable replacing the pump and timing chains myself.

So as a follow-up to this thread can the timing chain cover be removed without dropping the engine like the service manual claims?  I don't mind cursing and swearing to get it out but I don't want to pull all the bolts and accessories only to find it isn't removable.

Based upon what I can see when replacing the pump I might as well replace -

timing chains

timing chain gears

timing chain guides and tensioners

water pump inlet tube

Probably won't change the VVT sprocket and solenoids

in terms of quality I'm looking at either Ford/Motorcraft or Cloyes parts as I don't plan on doing the job a second time.
