Dash Does Not Line Up With Door Panels

I guess I should have noticed this and mentioned it to the dealership when I purchased the car but... after sitting in a newer model I noticed my dash has never lined up evenly with the door panels. It sits about 1/8" high. So the line of the trim look uneven wit the doors. I asked about it when my car was in to have the Satellite Antenna cable replaced and they never said why it is like this. Any thoughts as to how I can fix it? It drives me crazy now that I know it's not right.

I'll post a photo ASAP.

H Eurythmian.  If all the panels are attached properly, there is not much that can be done to adjust them.

Did you purchase new or used? Any work ever performed on the doors or dash which would have entailed either being removed, such as replacing door speakers etc.?

  • 3 weeks later...

I bought it slightly used. To my knowledge there has been no work done to the car. The dealership took a look at it and had my car for 2 weeks to fix a few issues it had, they told me the dash can not be adjusted. Something to do with it being permanently in a fixed position. I guess it's just a factory  installation Ooooops. Looks fine if it's not pointed out... just about 1/8" off. It's when I sat in a new one I noticed it right away. Never noticed it before. I'll try and snap a photo of it to the group.

Hi Eurythmian.  Yes, the dash and door panels are fixed position panels and there really is no adjustment.  They are put in place and fasteners go into holes with little to no adjustment. Unless the door panel and/or dash were removed and reinstalled incorrectly before you owned it, there is not much that can be done.

By the way, your car looks beautiful!

Thank you... I do get a lot of compliments on it. It's a tough color to keep looking this way - but I spend a lot of time wiping her down. Here are dash pics.

Wow that is bad. If it's original it never should have left the factory. I'd think it's due to damage or poor repair work.

The fact that it's the same on both sides tells me it's the dash that's out of alignment. It seems as though it needs to rotate downward,

Does the panel from this door make contact with the d-board?

Mine is just a tad off but not like yours.  Of course, as long as there is no squeaking, creaking or rubbing sound, I call it a win.

Nothing rubs and there is no squeaking. Its the same on each side... Sitting in the driver's seat looking at the passenger side it appears to be off more than on the driver's side - but when you sit in the passenger's seat it is the same looking over at the driver's side. Yes... I would agree that it appears that it needs to rotate downward to be in the correct position. But since none of this is adjustable, that would mean its a factory installation issue.

I never paid much attention to it until I sat in a newer model a couple years later. It isn't something that bothers me... overall, this car is fantastic which is why I never noticed it before.

Eurythmian , First I think the car is one of most stunning MKZs I have seen , I like that you framed the front license plate and is that a thin pinstripe ? I am a big fan of the 2013-16 front grill , I think Lincoln got too conservative when they redesigned the 17 model but that's another story . I have owned two Zs , the dash on the 2013 was a little off yours is way off in my opinion ,  but my 2016 is perfect and I was looking for it when I purchased the car as  Lincoln certified  used . I think a lot of the 13 models had this problem due to the fact it was the first of the new redesign .  The fact is on a car this expensive that is unacceptable workmanship given that it is something you will see every time you get behind the wheel , of course over time it will not be that big a deal giving the fact that there is nothing you can do to make it better and over all the car looks fantastic , we learn to live with  much worst things then this .  Best of luck with your Z .

I went from a Lincoln LS to this MKZ. I think I was WOWed by the beauty of it's color and deep reflective shine. Everything about the car had me mesmerized. I have never owned a super dark colored car before... and this will be my last. It's gorgeous clean but MY GOD!!! it takes an incredible amount of time and energy to keep it this way. The only polish I have found that does not haze or streak is Zano Z-5 Pro Show Car Polish. If you are not familiar with their line of products... you have got to check them out!

I could not believe the results after the first application. And it goes on easy and simply wipes to a bottomless deep reflective shine. It looks like a mirror reflecting back at me. I get compliments all the time on how gorgeous this car is. It's made living with the misaligned dash panel a lot easier.

Ha!  I've been a "Zaniac" for many years.  Simply the best.

I've got 4 layers on mine: Z-AIO, Z-2, Z-CS and Grand Finale. It doesn't need all that, but it's addicting.?
