Chris109
Well, headed to Florida when it was -10. 1st leg of the trip I got 25 mpg. WTF? I filled up with 93 octane. That was a mistake. Car ran like sh*t. Every time I stopped for a break and started again, car shook like a mother until I really floored it to get up to speed. Looked it up in the manual and said only use 89. Filled up again with 89, now I'm getting 33 mpg for the trip. Still terrible. 2 weeks ago, my total avg mileage was 42, now it's down to 36. Hopefully the warmer weather in Fl will bring it back up Should be running on electric the whole time in Tampa with the old folks poking about. Might be time to get a Prius. OMG! What am I saying? Dismonkey1
It will be interesting to see if the mpgs rebound in FLA. It could have been a bad winter blend or the engine not being designed for 93, but I think that it was most probably the extreme cold. The rapid drop in temperature throughout the NE and Mid Atlantic could have easily caused average mpgs to drop over 10%. Couple that to changes in tire pressure and I can see a 6mpg difference being plausible.
CDW6212R
Fuel is not as good during the Winter, and the changing of blends with an unlucky fill up(tank with old gas) can make any car run poorly for a while. Try to find stations which sell real gas, no alcohol gas. I don't need premium for my cars right now, but I have a station close that has real gas for 5 cents less than their premium with alcohol. They source the real gas from a different vendor, and the prices are unrelated. I'd buy the premium if the engine is made to take advantage of it, but it's a waste if it's not. jimflutes
Hey me too , trip to Phila. 36 mpg ( 500 round trip ) , this the lowest I ever got in 6 years of MKZh driving , I was around 40 until this very cold spell hit , so I think it is the weather . I always use 89 with no problems .
