Please tell me the factory tire are not good!

I have a 2017 MKZ Premier (I have no idea what tires/wheels it has) with 24K miles, had some snow and it was my first experience with the Z in the white slime.  Always have had front wheel so know the good and the bad on traction.  Well this sucked!  I was all over the place under any sort of power.  Once at speed it was fine but from a start, yikes.  I would be the one at the bottom of the hill  screwing everyone's day up.  Tires don't look brand new but don't look quite ready to be replaced and I would guess these factories are 40k tires.  I put a lot of miles on a commute (20k per year) so probably need new ones this summer.  I am hoping the stock tires are picked to make the ride nice and smooth out of the show room and my next one can actually grip something.  I've also noticed this in the rain as well, although not as bad.

Has anyone noticed the same thing?  Comments?

Hi Stardaddy.  I can state that I have no issues with my 2018 MKZ AWD 3.0T or my 2007 MKZ FWD 3.5 V-6.  Both have Michelin tires. Tires on the 2018 are the factory Michelin Primacy MXM4's.  Tires on the 2007 are now Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. They are the third set of tires on the car, including the factory Michelins, which I believe were the Michelin Energy S8.

Since we do not have much information about your MKZ, please answer these questions:

- What manufacturer and model tire is it equipped with? When you have a chance, check the sidewall of all 4 tires and let us know what make and model tire they are (all 4).

- Do all 4 tires look evenly worn? Do you rotate your tires regularly (every 6,000-8,000 miles or so)?

- Are you the first owner? Did you purchase the car new or used? If you purchased used and the previous owner mixed in replacement tires, that will adversely affect handling, especially in the rain and snow.

- What engine is your MKZ equipped with?

- Are you driving with traction control on or disabled?

- What PSI do you keep your tires inflated to? Check pressure regularly?

Give us the above information and we can give better answers for your situation. Not knowing the answers to those questions yet, I'll answer with general information.

- The factory all-season tires are usually Michelin and are good quality tires. But all-season tires have their snow limitations

- It is possible your car is equipped with summer only tires.  It was an option, although rarely ordered.

- All-season tires are a compromise and have their limitations.  If you are putting 20,000 miles a year on your car and regularly need to drive in heavy snow, dedicated snow tires are always the best bet.  They will make a world of difference.

- Tires with 24,000 miles on them will have degraded performance in the snow as compared to new.

That is just for starters.  We can give better advice with more information, as mentioned above.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

So this is just my 2cents on the stock MXM4s which my Reserve 3.0 AWD came with. They are a perfectly good tire depending on certain factors such as driving style, location,  treadwear, and whether your car is tuned/modded. I would agree with the statement above that the A/S tires (and the Primacy are cross between grand-touring and performance) are not meant for heavy snow. If I lived somewhere where there was a good deal of snow, I would probably go with winter tires. Also, your tread is probably low by now which will decrease whatever limited snow performance it had. I can get away with an A/S tire in the D.C. area because we have limited heavy snow and when it does snow, we shut everything down anyways LOL. With all that being said, if you mod your vehicle and cross the threshold where you need performance, handling and dry/wet traction, the Primacys have to go (they just can't handle the power to the rear wheels) and you need to go UHP A/S (but you will probably get even less snow handling than regular A/S- tradeoffs) or straight summers and put on the winters when needed. I would encourage you to provide feedback on bbf2530s questions/comments so that folks can weigh in with some help/answers.

I took the MXM4 off my new 2013 MKZh after sliding in small amounts of snow . This car is front wheel only and is generally not good in snow I would guess because of heavy weight , my old 2009 Accord stick shift was very good in snow . After taking off the MXM4 I went with Perilli a/s plus and experienced an improvement in snow driving in up to 4 inches , I am very experened with driving on snow so that is also a help , I liked the Perilli so I put them on my now 2016 MKZh , there are other high rated a/s tires you can see on tirerack.com. the MXM4 is very low rated . If you want to drive in higher amounts of snow you have to go with snow tires .

I know this is an old thread but I am throwing my 2 cents in for future readers. The OEM Michelin MXM4 94v SL 245/40/r19 has been surprisingly poor performing, for me. It is a smooth quiet tire. Those are the only two good things I can say about it. At proper inflation, these tires could no longer handle wet roads after 15k miles. I couldn't even get the car out of my cove to go to work during a very minor Memphis snow event. And they lasted no more than 25k miles before the tread was useless and my shop was unwilling to even rotate them. For a tire that proclaims to be in the sweet spot of an all-season, good handling, comfortable ride, and tread wear, I've had and now have better for less money. Never was a fan of Continental but the the Extreme/Control Contact rated better overall in dicey weather than all others except the fairly new Vredestein Quatrac Pro, and I'm willing to endure a little extra road noise for the extra grip in the rain. I usually keep my music too loud to hear it anyway. As a bonus they were $20/tire cheaper than MXM4. Your priorities may differ.

But after extensive research on the internet when tire shopping for the mkz, it seems rarely is anyone getting 40k miles on any brand in this tire size... touring a/s, performance or otherwise.

Your results and tread life are about the same as mine-dismal. I rotated front to back at 8k & 16K. Car's only got about 20k on it and when I pull the 4 snow tire & aftermarket wheels off next Spring to return the OEMs, it'll already be with two new tires because the ones that spent about 12k on the front don't have enough tread to bother with. Easier to just drop them off for new skins while the Blizzaks are still on the car. I prefer to swap the sets myself because it gives me a chance to take a good look at each corner with the wheel removed and look for any possible road object damage, mic the rotors and measure the pads, etc. FWIW, tire wear on all four was even and as good as any car I've owned, the tread just went away too soon IMHO.

I have liked the Continentals also for excellent grip in the rain, but they too wear very fast. I have two sets of them now that are about 2/3rds gone with under 15k miles. I'm used to seeing 30k miles or so, as I'm very hard on tires. I have a new set of Continentals for my last 92 Lincoln, price was good and I wanted the best rain performance.
