Stardaddyed
I just purchased an after market HUD unit for my MKZ. I tried placing it right in the middle of the steering wheel, making the display show up right in the middle of the road. The image was smack in the middle of the road. Very distracting. I have moved it to the left and while functional looks a little awkward. Whay would you think of the middle of the dash board?

Well, that's a personal taste type of question and a tough one. The object of a HUD is to project the information directly in front of the driver, but down low on the windshield, so as to not obscure vision or distract the driver. In this way, the driver can see important information and still keep their eyes on the road. Placing the image on the windshield over the middle of the dashboard would defeat the purpose (my opinion, of course). This would mean you are looking over towards the middle of the windshield and down instead of ahead at the road. That would mean moving your eyes to the right, and possibly even having to turn your head to look at the middle of the windshield. In that case, you're looking further away than just looking down at the instrument panel, speedometer, etc. Won't it fit on top of the dash directly in front of you so it can project the image lower on the windshield and directly in front of you? Or is the instrument panel cowl in the way there? Again, this is just my opinion, but placing it in the middle of the dash would seem to defeat the purpose of an HUD and make it stick out like a sore thumb on a nice dashboard. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. rubyinla
drolds1
It might help if you posted a picture of the HUD unit you have. They seem to come in a variety of configurations.
Stardaddyed
Duh, thanks, good idea. Size is 0.6" x 3.4" x 5.8" (14mm x 85mm x 147mm). It was a whopping $24 on eBay so I thought why not.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I tried and tried to get it low on the windshield. I think the basic problem is that I am short (5'7"). If I raise the seat then it is not that comfortable for my legs. Definitely a first world problem!!! The other thing I thought of is to make a mount with a screen for it, like a Hudley. Pretty easy I think. Maybe talk a piece of Plexi and bend it.
fusionff
I wouldn't consider that a 'Heads Up' display, and putting that dead center in front of you would just be a distraction. Just an opinion.

The MKZ's previous redesign was in 2013. The MKZ would have had a HUD in its next redesign, if it had not been discontinued. Good luck.
