Oil Change

Gonna be heading to the land of sunshine in the next week or so.  I've put about 4k miles on the car since I last changed the oil 2(?) months ago.  Should I change it again before I go?  The trip, one way, is 1200+ miles.  So, I figure 2700 total (more if I head to Palm Coast).  I checked the oil the other day and it is still looks new, like honey.

Hi Chris.  Short answer: No need to change the oil.

Does your 2013 MKZ have the Oil Life Monitor?  I believe yours does. Newer models do. That will tell you when you need to change the oil.

Is the oil change interval 7,500 or 10,000 miles for your 2013? Either way, you will be comfortably below the oil change interval when you get home. I would not change it if I was making the trip. I would put the money towards a nice dinner in Florida.

Have a safe trip and good luck.

Yes.  Lincolns have had an Intelligent Oil Life Monitor since 2011.  You'll get alerts when an oil change is coming due, such as:

Change Engine Oil Soon  Displayed when the engine oil life remaining is 10% or less. See  Engine Oil Check

To see exactly how much oil life is left, use the left toggle and scroll to through the menu to 'Settings.'  Go to 'Vehicle' and scroll to:

Remaining Life XXX% - Hold OK to Reset

Jeez, I left out that it is my '17.

I did set the oil monitor, but that really is a reminder to change it?  That doesn't do anything if you have some problem.

There's really no difference in that regard between a '13 and a '17.  Yes, it's a reminder, based on several algorithms. What do you mean by "some problem?"

Low on oil?  I thought there used to be some cars that would tell you oil level.

No, it won't tell you that.  You still need to chek the oil level the oil-fashioned way; with the dipstick.  ? My Mercury Sables did have a low oil level warning.  There was a sensor that was wired into the oil pan.  They dropped that after a while.  It's 30 years ago but I do remember that they tended to leak.

Hi Chris. As drolds mentioned, the Oil Life Monitor alerts us as to when it is time to change the oil, but does not monitor the oil level itself. Still need to do it the old fashioned way.

And since you were actually referring to your 2017, then your oil change interval is 10,000 miles. No need to change it before you leave for Florida.  If you like to go shorter than the recommended maintenance interval, change it when you get back.

Have fun in the sun! ?

Maybe I'll have R2D2 change it for me while I sit back and drink something with an umbrella in it.

When I had the oil changed last time, the sticker that the Lincoln guy put in the window for the next change

would make it out to be at 6500 miles.

Hi Chris.  That is because some Dealership Service Departments (and independent shops) still try to sell people on the old 3,000 or 5,000 mile oil change intervals. Makes more money for them. Do not go by the oil change stickers they put on your car. Even my 2007 MKZ had a 7,500 mile oil change interval.

Our cars have had an Oil Life Monitor and 10,000 mile/1 year oil change intervals for some time. All you need to do is check the Maintenance Schedule in your Owners Manual or Maintenance Booklet to verify. In addition, if you check your Owners Manual, you can adjust the Oil Life Monitor setting for lower intervals.

You can play it safer and go with 7,500 mile oil change intervals if you wish.  But assuming you had your first oil change performed around 3,000-3,500 miles, changing it at 6,500 (or before you leave for Florida) would be a needless expenditure. Modern synthetic blend and synthetic oils are good for far longer than that, your car has a 10,000 mile interval and changing that soon is just wasting money.

My opinion is...No need to waste money unnecessarily.
