2014 stalling issues

Recommended Posts

I’m a Newbee here and am hoping to get some help/advise.

I purchased my 2014 mkz a little over one month ago.  So in love with the car, drive, etc.  About three weeks ago the car just started randomly stalling while pulling out of a parking spot.  It happened randomly and about three to dour times now. Took it to a mechanic two separate times and he put the code reader on but nothing popped up.  Finally he recommended I see the dealer since there are hidden codes that can’t be seen.  Yesterday I took it to the Lincoln Dealer.  He diagnosed the fuel injector pump and luckily it was covered under my 6/70 ( I’m actually at 67400).  He also said my battery charge was very low and transmission fluid is dirty and should be changed.   I pick up the car today, drives beautiful, ran into a store, come out. Start the car and as soon as I pulled from the spot I could tell it was going to stall.  I tried pumping the gas to avoid being hit by the jerk on top of me and nothing.  The green engine light was blinking, pressed that again and it restarted.  The same issue before it went to the dealer!  $428.00  and I’m stalling again.  I believe it may only be stalling while I use the  start button and don’t recall noticing it when I use the key fob.  I’m literally driving myself crazy looking for any answers.

Hi NHgirl. Welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum! Unfortunately, Internet diagnosis in cases like this is iffy at best.  And there are multiple possibilities which can cause your car to stall.  So, that being said, here is my advice...

First, you can probably discount the starter button/keyfob thing. Yes, you should still tell the service techs what you've noticed about the starter button versus keyfob starting. However, once your car has started, you've shifted into gear and begun to drive away, it has no idea whether you used the starter button or keyfob remote start.

Second - If you had the car repaired by your Lincoln Dealer and it was not fixed correctly, make another appointment (hope you already did) to bring it back in to be re-diagnosed and repaired correctly.

Third -  If I understand your post correctly, they convinced you to replace your battery and have the transmission flushed and filled? What did they charge you, individually, for the new battery and transmission flush/fill? The total sounds high for only a new battery and transmission flush/fill. If it was the original battery, it was not a bad idea to have it replaced anyway. But next time you have your car in, either check the fluids yourself or have someone you trust who knows about cars check them for you.  Maybe the transmission fluid needed changing, maybe it did not. But a trans fluid flush is not called for that early, unless there was a problem (dirty, discolored, burnt, shifting issues etc). I was not there, so could not see the transmission fluid. Therefore, I am not saying the Dealers Service Department necessarily did anything wrong.  But next time, verify for yourself before spending the money.

Your car is still within the 6 year/70,000 mile warranty and they did not correct the original problem, so my advice would be to get your car back in as soon as possible.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Thank you!  Car has been back at the dealer and there are no codes, they cannot find a problem.  They said they tried to duplicate the stalling issue and it will not stall.  He’s going to continue today but I’m starting to feel like this won’t be resolved.  I can’t understand why the car would drive fine, then stall after restarting it when parked for 10 -20 minutes, start back up again and drive fine.  I love this car but am scared of getting hit by another car due to suddenly stalling.

Update- the car has continued to stall on warm starts only. I spoke to a family member who is a mechanic and he suggested replacing the fuel sensor (something behind the rear seat).  As I was going to his shop yesterday, the car stalled after driving it, parking for about 20 minutes and starting it back up.  Got to his garage, waited about 15 minutes to get there which I was happy about since experience tells me that it will die once restarted since it was driven and then sat for a few.  He grabbed his code reader. Hooked it up, started the car and after about one minute it starts choking and dies.  Finally!! Someone experienced it!  No lights came on but the code P0087 showed up on his diagnostic screen.

does anyone know of this code is now stored in the car where the dealer pull it up?  I have 68k miles and need to have this resolved while it still has the powertrain coverage if covered at all.

Any advise is greatly appreciated

Although your MKZ is not on the list, there was a recall, #16S31, which sounds an awful lot like your issue.

Fuel Pump Malfunction Leads to Recall of Multiple Ford Vehicles

The code should be stored, at least if it wasn't cleared by your family member.  But at least you have a code to mention since this issue could be dangerous, and will hopefully be repaired finally.

Hi NHgirl.  ,I would recommend having your family member write an Invoice from his shop, stating he retrieved a "P0087" DTC code.  Gives you something to show to your Dealers Service Department when you bring it in. It may help, just in case it was accidentally cleared (hopefully not).

And just to add some information to what fusionff correctly stated above: From a Google search of "P0087"-

P0087 trouble code definition

P0087 is Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low, indicating a fuel system problem.

This code is similar to P0088.

What the P0087 code means

P0087 is a general OBD2 diagnostic trouble code that indicates a fault within the fuel delivery system. This code is set once the ECM has detected low fuel pressure at the fuel pressure sensor.

Low fuel pressure causes the Check Engine Light to trigger by the ECM and a failsafe mode is enacted to prevent damage until repaired.

What causes the P0087 code?

  • The most common cause is a clogged fuel screen or filter
  • A failing fuel pump
  • A restricted fuel line
  • Improperly reading fuel pressure sensor will set P0087 as well

What are the symptoms of the P087 code?

  • Check Engine Light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Vehicle may run poorly
  • Loss of engine power, noticed during acceleration
  • Engine misfire
  • Vehicle may stop running

New here. Does anyone know if the stalling issue has been solved? My 2014 MKZ is doing the EXACT same thing. I replaced one of the fuel sensors already. It seemed to help for about a month, then the issue resurfaced. I was just vacuuming out my car (car vac that plugs into cigarette lighter) so I had to leave my car running. It stalled 3 times before I finally gave up. It stalls when idling or right after start up when I’m going maybe 5mph leaving a parking lot.

Hi JNMKZ. Welcome to the Lincoln MKZ Forum.

More information would help. There can be many causes for a "stalling issue" and there is no way to determine over the Internet what the cause may be in your MKZ.

Have you had any warning lights illuminating on your dash? A Check Engine light? Have you tried having your local AutoZone or other big box auto store scan your car for any stored DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)?

Your MKZ has a 6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty. Are you still within that warranty period? If yes, you should make a service appointment and let your Lincoln Dealer diagnose the problem.

Keep us updated and good luck.

No Check Engine lights are illuminated. When it first started stalling intermittently I went to Autozone and had them test my battery. The battery was not the issue.  I didn’t have them run diagnostics at that time because no CE lights were on. I did some research and thought replacing the one fuel sensor I replaced would solve the problem. Unfortunately I was wrong. I think I may be a little over 70k, but I will check. If I’m still under warranty I’ll bring it to a Lincoln dealer.
The car usually starts right up, no problem. After it stalls though, the green Power light will be blinking. I have to put it in Park, turn it off, and then restart it. When this happens, it still starts, but it definitely struggles more than usual. I have no issues when the car is up to speed, I’d say 20mph and up. I’m almost positive the issue is fuel related.

My issue had been resolved!  It was the on the sensor that sits on the fuel rail!  It was literally about a $75.00 fix at the dealer.  The dealer said it was common and once repaired, it never stalled again.  Sadly, it started leaking antifreeze internally and I had to get rid of it recently. Loved that car

NHgirl, if you see this, do you remember which sensor was replaced? The air/fuel ratio sensor? Upstream or downstream? Or was it the fuel injection rail pressure sensor? My MKZ stopped stalling for 10 months, and now it’s stalling again. Same issue as before.

SAME ISSUE HERE.

I am fairly mechanical and started ripping engines out of cars when I was 16, decades ago.

My 2015 MKZ 2.0T started stalling ONLY on WARM starts.  EXACT description as above.

Dealer charged $140 for diagnostics (did it 2X), then tells me it is the sensor on the fuel rail (code came up fuel rail pressure).

He replaced this sensor for $180 then also said battery was weak (1 yr old and it is fine).

Long story short is that it CONTINUES to do the exact same thing.  Stalls if it was driven and sat for <1hr.

No stalls if cold start, no stalls when driving long distance...even when stomping on it ;).  Stalls about 75% of time if warm.  Very dangerous to pull into traffic!!

The engine chuggs and stalls.  Pumping or letting off gas does nothing.  This is a LINCOLN ISSUE with sensors.

Don't let the boobs at the garage scare you into a fuel pump.  If it runs 95% of the time, it is NOT a fuel pump or filter.

Well, I would be happy if anyone knows a Lincoln dealer with some insight.

Thanks

Hi. My 2014 MKZ is no longer stalling. Issues resolved. Yes, pulling out onto a busy road used to be VERY dangerous. I can’t remember the part number, but I replaced a sensor where the arrow is pointing in the picture. It’s kind of down in there, behind some stuff, but not too hard to get to. Easy fix. No mechanic needed. I think that sensor malfunctioning causes the car to run too lean or too rich.

Hi there, can you provide a part number of which sensor you replaced? I may be suffering from the same issue.
