from prius to MKZ

hello MKZ forum, from the proud owner of a CPO 2016 MKZ hybrid.

i'm in sales, so i drive a lot.  it made sense to buy a prius, so i did.  30k/yr and i'm still only using half of my fuel allowance.  getting 48mpg in the summer and 44mpg in the winter, i didn't think anything could touch the iconic prius in terms of economy.  fast forward a few years and Leonard, an old man from a neighboring state side-swipes my prius on the I5.  into the shop it goes, and his insurance provider sends me over to enterprise, suggesting i get into a "chevy impala" or similar.  with a combined 25mpg, i suggested that was a measurable hardship, so they acquiesced and put me into a 2018 FFH for a week.

curious how a mid-size (full size in my opinion) sedan would fare as a hybrid, i reset the economy tools and gave it my best shot.  i turned the car in with 44.4mpg combined on the clock, after 6 days of careful, if not meticulous driving.  this got me thinking...  a prius is certainly acceptable for a salesman.  who would want to drive a whole lot and waste money on gas?  that would negatively impact the profitability of my profession.  but as a salesman, shouldn't i drive something that exudes business and success?

so i drove around deflated in my fixed up prius, reminiscing of the 2018 FFH titanium in the days of yore, and it's nearly equivalent economy.  truth be told, 44mpg was effortless in the prius, and it took a concerted effort to achieve in the FFH, but it was possible... so i began my search for a 2016 or better FFH.  a titanium one.  none of them fit the bill, so i set my sights on the fancier brother, the MKZ hybrid.  then i met the panoramic roof.  then i met the 600A reserve equipment package, which introduced me to the technology package, and down the rabbit hole i went.

to make a long story short, 1100 miles away in CA, i found a CPO 2016 MKZ Hybrid in white tricoat metallic, with the painted 19" wheels and the panoramic roof.  optioned with the black (not charcoal) leather interior, no wood grain, every single option (except motorized rear shade), and MINT condition to boot... i flew down there and drove it home for a meager 26K out the door.

happy to be here.

this so-called "hyper miling" is fun though... almost like a game.  try to drive without the ICE as much as possible, until the battery gets low, then shift the focus to charging...

it reminds me greatly of playing warcraft2 when I was a kid... attack attack attack, then oh shit defend, defend, defend!  maybe that's just my way of coping with a 90min commute home most days.

Whenever I'm out and about and end up next to a Prius, I look over and think, "Why would anyone drive around in that thing? One can have luxury along with great mileage."  A Prius, imho, is a statement car which says, "I care more than you."  Nowhere on a Zh does it state that it is a hybrid except for the "H".  And after driving a Zh, one will never go back to a Prius.

As for 'hypermiling'; on my 2013, I could go a couple of miles using just electric (that is with no one behind me) and get 999.9 mpg.  On my 2017, I can only get 99.9.  I lose 900 mpg.  Bummer.

i just don't think enough people know that FFH/MKZH, and probably camrys and avalons for that matter... can achieve spectacular mpg.

my wife drives a 2010 FEH, and while it's pretty great in a lot of way, unless i'm driving and hyper-miling, it sits around 30mpg.

i didn't take pride in my mobile portrait, framed in prius.  it was strictly a business decision.  kicking it out was an emotionally driven decision.

Driving behind a Prius with the driver hypermiling is probably a major cause of road rage.  In addition, the latest generation is , IMO, one of the ugliest cars on the road;  a latter-day Pontiac Aztek, if you will.

I have always felt that the Prius was intentionally vile (aesthetically) so that the average driver may choose form over function.  Once I realized that economy and quality weren’t mutually exclusive, I was pretty damned quick to jump ship.

As far as hyper-miling, I never did that in my Prius. That would’ve been a real drag.  The one thing I do appreciate about that car, is that acceptable (by my standard) economy is effortless.

You wont see me looking back though!

BTW all, not everybody who drives a prius wants to go on a date with you, is smugly saving the world, or is some other negative thing.
