Intermittent Check Engine Light

Recommended Posts

This started back in September, Check Engine light came on and so I made an appointment (one week out) light went out 2 days before the appointment.

one week later came on again for 1 day and disappeared. Third time was on again for a few day, so I made another appointment (10 days out). Light went out again but I kept the appointment and they said it was a faulty O2 sensor but none in stock, finally got it in 3 days later and they replaced back on 10/15/18. Light came on again today (now this is becoming annoying), have to wait again until next Thur for appointment.?

Back on 10/15 they replaced part CJ5Z-9G444-B Sensor - Exhaust for a retrieved code PO13A. Also stated that no exhaust leaks found details say this is the Catalyst Monitor O2 sensor.

I am not noticing any performance or odd engine issue.

Does this make sense to any mechanically minded out there?

Hi R2D2.  Can't help you on the diagnosis.  However, if you have an Autozone or other national auto parts chain store near you and get a CEL again, try to stop by as soon as possible and have them read the DTC codes. Autozone and many of the others do it for free.

Call some of your local outlet and ask if they provide this service.  Then you'll know where to go if it happens again.  At least you will have the codes for your own records, in case the CEL goes out before you get to the Dealership.

EDIT - Not sure if you Googled P013A or not.  Here is one informative return - https://www.autocodes.com/p013a.html

As you can see, like most DTC's, there are multiple possible causes for that DTC code.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Thanks for the info, I did run it by Autozone when this first happened and they gave me the same code but could not offer a repair part, they told me to see the dealer. I will stop by them again this afternoon to see if the same code turns up.

I wonder if there is any connection between this and the other intermittent issue of the vibration felt as the gas engines starts shutting down as it is changing over to the electric motor (hybrid operation). They could never give me a reason of why this happens.

here is the link to that thread

Hi R2D2.  I did not realize you have an MKZ Hybrid, and most forum members who read this may not realize it either. In my case, I did not read your profile at the bottom of your post. Maybe mention the year and that it's a hybrid in your post.  You'll get better answers that way.

I am going to move this thread over to the MKZ Hybrid Engine sub-forum, where you may be able to get information better tailored to your MKZh.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Move to more applicable sub-forum.

In fact I no longer see any way to change any of the profile information, I added my MKZ type to my signature line for now

Back on topic..... of course the Check Engine light went out again on its own....

Hi R2D2.  Just sort of an FYI for everyone: What I was also recommending is that we all include our vehicle information (e.g. 2014 Hybrid, or 2016 2.0T FWD, or 2018 3.0T AWD, etc) when we post with an issue. Not everyone reads the signatures. And a lot of us do not even have signatures.

Posting our vehicle information/descriptions in the opening post will help us get answers from our members and tech members which can be more specific to our own models. In your case, it may help avoid answers and information which may not/will not apply to Hybrids. And with specific vehicle information, we can sometimes find TSB's and Service Advisories, which apply to specific model years, models, engines etc.

Just a recommendation for all of us.

Okay, back to your topic and good luck.

Well they are reordering the CJ5Z-9G444-B Sensor - Exhaust (other was installed about 3 weeks ago) I think they are just guessing, the car acted the same way before and after the sensor change so I fail to see how another new sensor will solve the issue. We shall see

I was at dealer today and noticed a customer had same issue with check engine light going on and off on it's own on his 17 MKZh.  Dealer coulden't figure out and asked customer to comeback next week.

Well it has been about 4 weeks now and I don't want to jinx it but after the 2nd replacement sensor I have not seen a recurrence of the Check Engine light.\

In their case do you know if he had the same code (P013A)?

Could it be a sign that water pump is ready to go out?  I had similar situation with my Mazda where intermittent check engine light for 18 month until water pump died and replaced to mitigate engine light issue.  The check engine light code was keep pointing to oxygen sensor.

Note that the replacing water pump was very much end of trouble free service mazda provided. This is due to dealer service dept. and independent shops could not put all parts back to gather properly and it all started going downhill from that point on.

Not sure I understand how a water pump could affect or be affected by an oxygen sensor

Actually they did do the testing for exhaust leaks during the original trip to the shop for this issue but I will mention it to them again, I have another appointment just after the New Year

I actually find in my local the opposite, my overall mileage will drop 1-2 MPH in the heat of the summer and go back up in the colloer weather

Well, it;s the other way around a faulty water pump might have set off O2 sensor. At-least that was the main suspect in my situation. Could be various reasons, coolant leaking in an internal system that was not noticeable.

Well a coolant leak, even internal, would leave evidence by the way of lost coolant from the reservoir. My coolant level in the reservoir has been steady.

Ok, was at the dealer yesterday and they are stumped. They supposedly elevated the issue to Lincoln engineering but I saw where that went when I had the rumbling issue while the car was changing from the gas to the electric motor....

?It may be time to look for another vehicle, definitely next vehicle is back to an SUV or crossover, preferably a hybrid

Well, if you get another vehicle, there would be no reason for me to stop by when I'm down there to compare Zhs and have a look at your broken gas tank cover that you fixed, and have a few brewskis.
