3.0T oil change ?

Just a big 27mm socket. It's quite easy. The housing has your torque specifications on it as well. It is most just snug enough till you get resistance being 15 nm.

Also always remove the filter first before you remove the drain plug from the pan. It also helps to loosen the dipstick and oil fill cap to reduce any pressure. This makes it so the oil will not gush out upon removing the drain plug.

If the car was running prior to starting the change, allow 15 to 20 minutes for majority of the oil to return to the pain. After refilling with fresh fluid, again wait awhile before checking fluid readings since it takes awhile for some oil to pass the check valve.

But it should always be exactly 6.0 quarts (a gallon and half) of engine oil going in. Make sure the oil dipstick's lowest dot is filled with oil, but avoid passing the hash marks and filling the top most fill dot on the dipstick (sign of being too much.

I'm really going to miss how easy it was to change all fluids on this vehicle...for a modern car.

The filter is pretty straightforward. Along with changing the filter, you also change the O-rings as new ones come with the filter.

The only challenging part is replacing the smallest O-ring, which small pliers should help flex it on. Or heat it up, lube it with some oil, and it should go on easier.

There is a yellow drain plug on the oil pan. You do not need to remove any covers to access it, and pretty easy to spot.

As stated before, loosen the oil dipstick and filter housing first then untwist and pull the plug out quickly once ready to collect. Align the edge of whatever container or pan you use to collect oil, as it will flow forward at an angle like a water fountain due to some pressure, it does not flush straight down. Edge of  collection container should line up with the drain plug.

Do that for a non-messy change. Once oil is drained, attach the plug back. Finally after changing the filter, you can seal it up, close the oil dipstick, and fill 6 quarts of new oil. Wait 10-15 mins then check the dipstick (system has a check valve so accurate reading upon filling is not exact). As long oil fills the bottom hole and within hash marks when around ambient temperature, all is good.

Finally got around to doing my first oil change. It was really easy. I haven't ever seen a oil plug like this one. There is really no reason not to do this yourself it is so easy! The filter looked really dirty. Maybe they always look like this? Hopefully the dealer did actually change the oil as they said and not just reset the oil change gauge.

OEM Cartridge is fine. You're free to use any oil as long it sticks within OEM guidelines.

I suggest to read the fine print on the warranty conditions, but it should not void anything to DIY unless proven that the owner put too little or too much oil in a properly flowing system. It's simply 6.0 quarts of engine oil, so 1 gallon and 2 quart bottles will suffice.

The 3.0T is one of the easiest vehicles to DIY. Ramps, 27mm socket (torque wrench optional, honestly just hand tight to resistance is within torque specs), and a large capture drain pan is all that is needed. No underbody shields will be in the way of the drain plug.

I got my synthetic 5w30 ready but I assume most people are using the motorcraft oem cartridge? I got a super deal on a 3.0t awd last month and purchased a 5yr extended warranty.

Will changing your own oil void it?

Hi Jon. No, performing your own oil changes does not affect your New Car or LincolnCare Extended Warranty. This assumes you are using the correct specification oil, filter etc. However, keep good records and keep a personal maintenance schedule with dates performed etc, along with all receipts for the oil, filter etc.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I will try to give it a go as I've also never changed a cartridge filter but it sounds easy. The oem filters are like $40 or 50 in canada. Though it's like $5 to $11 in usa, Shipping is like $30plus to Canada.  Cant  drive across the boarder for a while it seems.

Anyone use a ez oil drain plug or futmoto? I used one for a decade on my s2000 and its awesome. I dont even need to jack up the car.  This car might be different though since I probably cant reach though the engine bay to slide the lever to release the oil.

The toughest thing for me was finding a 27mm socket. I ended up getting one off Amazon. I have an extended warranty also, but I think it will be fine. I am trying to keep the receipts and logging my oil changes on the Lincoln website. It is probably the easiest oil change I have ever done. My drain plug is a plastic twist off variety, so than is even easier than most.

I can find any spot to log the oil change on the lincoln site or app. Did they remove this feature?

I just checked the Lincoln Way app.

Click on Vehicle Details.

You are presented with a choice between Your Vehicle and Services & Support.

Under Services & Support, you can find Services History.

From here, you can view the recent service visit updated by the dealer (if they participate) or ADD a service yourself.

Good luck!

Kramf, I think they removed it from my app. I saw it before in feb when I got the car. It must be an update. It doesnt have service history anymore under service and support area.

The app I got is version 2.26.2 can.   I'm in canada.

The full lincoln owner webpage also seem to have removed it too from service history.  Am I correct?

I have had nothing but trouble with both the app and web versions. Sometimes my service history shows up, other times, not so much. It must be some poorly written software, or the database is unstable. Probably outsourced.

Hi Jon. If you read the banner, it probably informs you that the car has gone into "Battery Saver Mode". This means the vehicle protective systems have determined the battery charge is below optimum. This can be due to the car not being driven enough lately and/or very low ambient temperatures.

Many owners are getting this warning lately, due to the pandemic crisis leading to far less driving. Many cars are sitting still for days or weeks on end, or only being driven on short grocery trips if at all. So over time, the battery slowly loses its charge. Once it gets low enough, the vehicle goes into "Battery Saver Mode". The communication systems shut down and can not fully connect to the app while in Battery Save Mode. To exit Battery Saver Mode, you need to physically start the car. And in some cases, the car will need to be driven for some time to allow the battery to charge. Or alternately, you can attach an external charger.

This is explained in the Owners Manual (well except for the pandemic and battery charger parts).

Hope this information helps and good luck.

I got the message when I was installing my front and rear dashcams.  That was due to me forgetting that I'd left accessory mode on too long.  As soon as I started it up, it cleared itself.   That said, the ODO on my 2020 just turned over 400 miles yesterday after 2 months+.  Where am I going?

Hi Jon. While "Battery Saver Mode" is the most likely cause, there are other possibilities (i.e a failing battery etc). However, knowing exactly what the LincolnWay app message states might be helpful.

Even assuming it is Battery Saver Mode, sometimes just a restart is not enough. That was why I also stated above, "...in some cases, the car will need to be driven for some time to allow the battery to charge".  If the charge state of the battery is low enough, the car will need to be driven for awhile to recharge.

If driving the car for some time does not correct things, then a call to Lincoln Concierge or a trip to the Dealer for service may be necessary. Is your 2017 MKZ still within the 4 year/50,000 mile Bumper to Bumper Warranty?

Let us know who you make out and good luck.

Finally did the oil change. I was warned about the drain shooting out in a 45 degree angle but it was more. Made a mess.

The drain plug seem to just click in by hand when you tighten it.  No need to torque? Just making sure when I'm closing it.
