Noise when coasting (Regen braking)

I starting noticing a noise last week on my 2014 MKZh with 56K miles on it when I take my foot off the accelerator and coasting as I was coming up to a red light.

The noise is loudest at 30-35 mph but can appear at almost any speed. It sounded like almost a dry bearing, no squealing or squeaks, just a dry metal-on-metal rubbing/rotating sound, almost like a what a dragging brake pad might make. It was not coming from any wheel but from the engine compartment. If I hit my brake to further slow down the sound diminished but as soon as I release the brake to continue coasting it immediately came back.

As I was due for an oil change, I scheduled the service (including the steering wheel bolt recall) for Tuesday and informed my dealer that I would wait for the car as I had 3 hours to kill before a meeting.. After being in the service bay for about 2 hours after my 1st thing in AM appointment, the service advisor came out and told me he had some bad news. The noise is coming from my transmission and they were going to keep the car. They immediate lined up a 2018 loaner MKC for me and I was on my way.

They said it may be a few days before they have an answer for me, so I will post here what is ultimately found.

Update

The car has been at the dealer since 6/12 when they determined that the noise was internal to the transmission. I spoke them late yesterday (6/20) afternoon and they informed me that the "transmission shop" has not even looked at the vehicle and it may be at least another week before they determine the real issue.

Now this is not a small dealer by any means, In fact it is one of the largest dealers in the state and this location handles much more than Lincolns and Fords. Something just does not feel right about this and the service manager is not volunteering what is going on..... I am beginning to think there is a bigger issue here.

After doing some research, I found this thread over in the Fusion forum

http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/9913-2014-ffh-transmission-replacement/

it included a link to a TSB but the link is not working, and I am not sure if it is the same transmission in the MKZH. Mine is listed as E-CVT on my window sticker while they are talking about a HF-35.

Anyone have access to tsb14-0214.pdf  HF35 TRANSMISSION - THUMPING/RUBBING OR GRINDING NOISE and could post it or email it to me? - THANKS

I then found this article that supposedly supersedes TSB-014-2014

https://ford.oemdtc.com/578/thumpingrubbing-or-grinding-noise-coming-from-transmission-2013-2016-ford-lincoln

 .......and this

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/SB-10092366-5448.pdf

I thought my build date was on the window sticker but don't see it. I would think I would fall into the "built on or before 8/15/2015" as my invoice is dated 10/29/2014.

Anyone have any thoughts before I blow my top at the dealer

TSB 14-0214

11/19/14

HF35 TRANSMISSION - THUMPING/RUBBING OR GRINDING NOISE

FORD:
2013-2014 C-MAX, Fusion

LINCOLN:
2013-2014 MKZ

This article supersedes TSB 14-0176 to update the service procedure due to service tool compatibility.

ISSUE
Some 2013-2014 C-MAX, Fusion and MKZ vehicles equipped with an HF35 transmission may exhibit a thumping/rubbing or grinding noise coming from the transmission. The noise may be present in all gear ranges including neutral when the vehicle is moving, but will not be present when the vehicle is stationary or in Park.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. With the vehicle at operating temperature, road test the vehicle and lightly apply the brakes from 48-16 Km/h (30-10 MPH).

a. The engine shuts-off on deceleration when the vehicle is at operating temperature.

2. Is a thumping/rubbing or grinding noise present?

a. No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01 for normal diagnosis.

b. Yes - proceed to Step 3.

3. Install new transmission assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01.

a. Flush transmission fluid cooling system. Refer to WSM, Section 307-02.

As you noted, this was superseded 17-0039.

BTW, the date at the bottom of the window sticker is not the build date, although it's fairly close. It's the date the sticker was generated.  The month and year is on the doorjamb sticker.  In your case, you don't need to know the exact day.

HF35 is the trans used in all MKZHs.

I believe this would be under the powertrain warranty which is typically longer then the B-to-B.

    • Powertrain warranty:72 months/70,000miles
    • Roadside assistance coverage:unlimited months/ unlimited distance

So, since this is a TSB, and someone has the problem and are out of warranty, that would mean you are screwed and have to pony up some bucks to get it fixed?

If you're completely out of any warranty coverage, then, yes.  It would be out- of- pocket.  This is at the bott

MY Sincere thanks

I am going to confront the service advisor & service manager at the dealership with this TSB info as soon as I get back to FL since they seem to be hiding from telling me what is wrong which I don't understand. It has been two weeks since I brought the car in and not a peep from them. Maybe there is a bigger picture here then they want to tell me.

Right now I am on LI for a grandson's HS graduation, flying back on Thurs.

I guess I am going to have to speak to the service Manager and/or director at my dealership or maybe I am going to ask for the owner,

It has been over two weeks (went in 6/12) that my MKZh has been in for service and after two more enquiries to my service advisor yesterday

I got the ever elusive text reply again that the car has still not seen the transmission shop for evaluation and absolutely no comment on my forwarding of the related TSB @drolds1 was so kind to list above or any indication of when, where or what is happening.

This is very frustrating and highly unusual for this dealership where in the past they have always been spot on with service and information since starting with them in 2013.
