FaSSt2001
Hi. New to these boards. We have a 2014 MKZ Hybrid that has started making a whining noise when the gas engine is running. It only makes the sound when the engine engages and it does it in park and all gears. It's a lot less audible in neutral and reverse though. It gets louder with acceleration as well. I've never heard anything like this before. It resembles alternator whine, but I'm finding out that these cars don't have alternators. The sound is coming from right under the electric motor, but it's so tight right there I can't really see what's there. I made some videos of the sound to hopefully help diagnose it. It's driving us nuts and we really don't want to take it to the dealer. Has anyone heard anything like this on their hybrids (or even gas models) before? Thanks in advance for any input. geno4952
Wow.... that is really nasty sounding. If it is still under warranty I definitely would take it to a dealer. It sounds to me like two pieces of metal grinding against each other. Good luck man..... Peace
glocklt4
I posted to your other thread on the blue oval forum, but checking back here as well to see if you got this fixed an have details on what the problem was: https://www.blueovalforums.com/forums/index.php?/topic/65213-strange-engine-whining-noise/
glocklt4
As posted in the other forum, wife's car needs a new transmission. Probably the bearing issue posted there. Go there for more details.
FaSSt2001
Hi. Sorry, I didn't see these notifications until now. Yes, our issue was the transmission as well and we had to get a new one put it. Our dealership ended up finding us a used one out of a wrecked car and it cost us half the price of a new one. No warranty covered our repairs, but we didn't know about the hybrid parts warranty. They also told us the transmission is sealed and they don't work on them, they only replace them. I'm glad they are covering it under warranty for you. I would have never guessed that sound would be coming from a transmission. Good luck! R2D2
Well car went into the shop (again) about two weeks ago. Once they got the bad gas problem straightened out, I started to hear funny noises like a dry bearing or a hanging caliper on the brakes. They diagnosed it as a tranny issue,. just over 80K miles on the 2014 hybrid. They called to tell me a new tranny is on it's way and should arrive tomorrow to the dealer... Has anyone found the 2020 Corsair in Hybrid yet to test out? I really have to get a new car ?

R2D2
The saga continues Following up on my post above from Friday 11/22/19 After they finally cleared up my bad gas issue (I am still trying to recover money from the gasoline company) I started to hear that same noise again that sounded like a dry bearing or a hanging caliper. Took it into the dealer 2 weeks ago and they kept it, just got it back yesterday as they changed the transmission (yes you read that right) Work performed per TSB 18-2328. All seemed good until I got home as I could not get the car into reverse to back into the garage. I would hit "R" and it would immediately switch down to "N" accompanied by these two notices, switching back and forth between them. If I turned the car off and then restart it, I could immediately shift in reverse for 1 time only , 2nd time it would go back into the same error error mode. ?Back to the dealer 1st thing in the morning. BTW The manual says the following on this error screen... well that was helpful.....NOT and I could not locate a copy of TSB 18-2328 on-line 2014 MKZh with 80,525 on the clock Edited 5 minutes ago by R2D2 Edited November 26, 2019 by R2D2
drolds1
That doesn't look like a regular TSB format. Maybe it the original TSB was superseded but this was it (14-B07): Quote ISSUE: Some 2013-2014 C-MAX, Fusion and MKZ vehicles equipped with an HF35 transmission may exhibit a thumping/rubbing or grinding noise coming from the transmission. The noise may be present in all gear ranges including neutral when the vehicle is moving, but will not be present when the vehicle is stationary or in Park. ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE With the vehicle at operating temperature, road test the vehicle and lightly apply the brakes from 48-16 Km/h (30-10 MPH). The engine shuts-off on deceleration when the vehicle is at operating temperature. Is a thumping/rubbing or grinding noise present? No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01 for normal diagnosis. Yes - proceed to Step 3. Install new transmission assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01. Flush transmission fluid cooling system. Refer to WSM, Section 307-02. Apparently, they screwed something up when installing the new trans. Brought it back in early (7:45) in the AM and they had me back out and on my way by 9. Claimed they found many communication errors and reprogrammed several units. So far for the afternoon we were good, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
bbf2530
Hi guys. Not sure if this helps, but found this: https://ford.oemdtc.com/2846/customer-satisfaction-program-14b07-transmission-inspection-and-repair-2013-2014-ford-c-max-fusion-hybrid Strangely enough, it does not mention the MKZh in the original Customer satisfaction Program notes, and the program was set to expire on 5/31/16. Perhaps the MKZh was added and the program end date extended later. Good luck. Edited November 27, 2019 by bbf2530

R2D2
Transmission saga continues..... Car yesterday morning on three different occasions exhibited yet again problems of trying to go in reverse. Symptoms - Pressing R to back into a parking space, it would first start in reverse and then after two-three feet, it felt like the transmission just disengaged, after a split second it would start going into reverse again and then once again disengage, repeating this until we finally got into the spot. I did notice that the backup camera screen went blank each time it stopped moving in reverse. Hard to detect other observations or warnings as it happens so fast. Took it into the dealer yesterday mid-morning but they found no codes and they could not repeat in test driving it, asked me to make note of the level of the hybrid battery when this happens. Anyone got any ideas what is going on?

I wonder if they put enough tranny fluid in it.
R2D2
Not a tranny in the traditional sense for a hybrid and the display of the camera when it goes off doesn't revert back to another screen, it goes blank. It comes back on when reverse engages. Edited December 5, 2019 by R2D2

drolds1
I have no idea about the electronics and trans control in the Hybrid. IDK if it's controlled by a TCM or the ECU or if it has a range sensor. Just spitballing, but between the intermittent non-movement and camera going blank, it sounds like a momentary loss of communication between whatever controls the trans and the trans itself. No messages? Of course, OTOH, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about here. Have they called the engineering Hotline in Dearborn or are they going to try and figure it out? R2D2
Don't know, they haven't said, been trying to get service manager back on the phone for 2 days with no response to voice mails and text messaging. Car is deteriorating as the "Sys Shift Fault" error is reoccuring. And now having problem just starting the car.

R2D2
Well, Before I said it was fixed, I wanted to be sure that my issue was gone. Picked up the car on the 14th and the reverse issues have not reappeared, they said they had to adjust a cable. "Adjust & Reset Shift Cable" Cable? I thought this tranny was run by motors not a linkage cable.

This is from a 6F50 but I'm sure the CVT is operated the same way: R2D2
