typical range on elec pwr

Recommended Posts

Toyoytas, unlike Hondas will motivate on elec alone.   With the (company) statement that the car will achieve freeway speeds on e-power alone, I don't think my question was out of line.

Does anyone with a new (2014) MKZ have any, more positive feedback?

I can go a max of 1.5 miles on a fully charged HVB at 35 mph with a slight uphill grade from my house to the main roadway.  If your primary commute is 30-40 mph, with multiple stops (for regeneration), you can stay in EV mode indefinitely.  Of course, if you use the HEAT or A/C, your EV range will be shorter.  Although the Z has an electric A/C compressor, it gets its juice from the HVB.  The heater, of course, gets its heat from the ICE.  With the latest update to the Hybrid software, the car will enter EV mode up to 85 MPH, though it will not stay in EV for very long at that speed (unless you are going downhill).  :)

Bottom line:  EV range is dependent on many factors.  State of charge of the HVB, speed, terrain, ambient temperature (batteries do not like freezing temps), altitude, and the weight of your right foot.

Have you owned a hybrid before?  Ever driven one?  How do you plan to use it?  More info on your part would be helpful.  :)

Bay Greg...

I wasn't trying to be a "smart ass" if it did come off that way I apologize.

Point I was making is that it is not a plug in electric and is not designed for long EV range without and assist from the engine.

If you baby your starts and don't have any hills you "may" get 1 mike in EV. The problem being the engine is designed to assist, so going pure EV mode take a lot of effort in driving style to accomplish. However, if you drive conservatively the gas usage is minimal and 50+ mpg are very doable. For that size car, I think those numbers are extremely good.

Other cars are designed to go EV first and the go to gas after the battery drains. Mostly plug in cars do that...  as an example (using your Toyota comment) the plug in Prius get's about 6 (EPA calculated) miles of pure electric, according to Green Car Report before having to switch over to the "Hybrid" engine for assist.

As a MKZ Hybrid owner, I have come to love this car. I previously owned a Prius C4. Now the Prius C4 got 50mpg and this one routinely gets 39 - 42. However, there is an unequivocal difference between the two from a style, size, and quality standpoint. To the original post, depending on the usage, route, and braking you can be in electric mode quite a long time. Also, there is an amazing feeling when you take your foot off the gas at about 80 and the car goes into electric mode...

Coming out of a 2013 Prius, to me the Z is easier to run around town on EV mode, at least for the short trips that I've been taking.

Any steep grade will force it to start. If you live in a fairly level terrain and you could baby it, you may get a few miles. Getting back may need engine start as battery will likely be pretty drained. In the end the engine will start when battery gets low to charge it as driving around babying it will likely not get enough excess velocity built up to do much regen braking.

Here is a simple overview of my finding I was not searching for to ponder. I drove it like my grandfather for a week or so when I first got ours. I then needed a vitrectomy (eye surgery) My wife needed to drive me around. She drives far more aggressive. Low and behold after she drove it a few days the avg MPG had increased by .1.1 MPG. So I stopped trying to baby it too. Said nothing to her...
