Should Ford have recalled them?

Recommended Posts

Most here know the issue now with the Lincoln 3.0T and Fords 2.7T within a particular build date having bad cylindar heads causing issues. So should Ford and Lincoln have recalled these cars? Would Lexus have recalled them? Would BMW have recalled them etc?

Hi ZED.  No, there was no need for a recall (at this point).  Not all cylinder heads in that lot have an issue and the majority don't.  So they are repaired or replaced when necessary, as with all warranty issues. If there is need for a recall due to further information, Ford will issue a recall. And no, BMW, Lexus or any other manufacturer we can name wouldn't have issued a recall at this point either.

Just the educated opinion of one person.  Good luck. :)

Recalls are for safety issues.  This is not a safety issue.  As bbf2530 says, if there were substantial numbers, they might initiate what's known as a customer satisfaction campaign.  They've issued a TSB and will fix the defect under warranty if a customer brings it to a dealer's attention.

WRT Lexus, Toyota (parent company of Lexus) was fined over $1billion for concealing safety defects. They also initially refused to fix defective engines in Camrys, choosing instead to blame owners for not changing oil frequently enough.  Another class action suit resulted.  BMW?  A judge has agreed with plaintiffs that a class action suit against them for fraud can go forward based on concealment of a serious engine defect.

So, no.  Neither company would have "recalled" them.  Ford's not fighting anybody on this and is fixing the cars without a class-action lawsuit being filed against them.
