GPS Map Update '14 MKZ

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Recently picked up a '14 MKZ.  Want to update the GPS data base....my Dad just bought a '18 MKZ.  Any chance that his SD card (I assume his came with one like ours) could be used to update ours??  I kind of doubt it but thought I'd ask.  If that won't work, what does the dealership charge for an update--or is Amazon/Ebay an option??

Thanks!!

No. Your father's 2018 has Sync3 which doesn't use an SD card.  Map updates will be done via a flash drive.  You need an A8 card.  If you search through this forum, you'll find discussions about obtaining one.

Makes sense....I thought that would be too easy.  So, with a A8 card, is it simply a matter of inserting it in the slot and it will read/install on it's own?  Thanks!!

Sounds like that will do it for me then--Thanks!!  Just curious, after I do the install, could I give the card to someone else or is it a one shot kind of deal thing??

Hi Rebel.  As Joe has stated above, the SD card has to stay in the navigation unit. It doesn't upload/download information into your NAV unit, it contains and is the information. So if you purchase an A8 card, it needs to stay in your NAV unit for it work. If you remove it and give it to a friend, your NAV unit will not operate because you removed all the map and navigation information.

O.K. now I understand it.  I saw a SD card in the glove box (A4 or 5, can't remember right now) and figured you would upload the info from the card and then remove it.   Maybe that was the original card and a newer one will be in the slot--I'll look later today.  I doubt it was updated but maybe I'll get lucky.

So what's to stop a computer-inclined individual making a copy of the A8 card and dropping it in their MKZ?  Hypothetically speaking of course ?

Hi ERock. Other than copyright laws...hypothetically...nothing.

I'm sure that is how the E bay sellers sell them for under $50....that's the way I bought mine.  I would assume that there is something security wise in the card that you would need to bypass in order to copy it ( which is WA beyond my 'puter skills) but once you break that, well, then they copy away.  Just a thought.

Question on the SD map card.

Will Ford/Lincoln ever stop producing these SD card for are vehicles that needs these SD cards.

Hi Izzy.  Updates come from the outside GPS maps provider. Used to be Navteq, not sure who it is now. The answer to your question is yes though. In the same manner that they eventually stop making parts for older vehicles, at some point they will stop updating the maps. Especially since SD cards are no longer in use on the newer NAV systems.  When? No way to know.

Thanks for the info and hope it isn't any time soon.

Dear All,

Please tell me. How can I know the different between Maps of A8 and Maps of A9 ?

In theory, it is data from about 1 year later - but exactly what timeframe that covers is not clear to me.  In my area, which is rapidly growing, I look for streets/roads/new exits that I know have been built (and when) and get a sense of the timing.   On the A9 chip, I find roads that were new about 12-18 months ago from now, but nothing newer.  I have been buying chips for various cars since the A4 Chip (2013) and the data lag has been consistent over the years..

In all cases, the data is only as good as the people providing it.  The A9 Chip still has a local shopping mall name wrong - even 5+ years later.  It sold 5+ years ago and changed it's name.

At one point, a new flyover ramp on a local highway took almost 3 years to appear on the chip.  Or in other cases, local restaurants or stores that have been closed and torn down for a couple years - are still listed.

You will also find that different companies make suppositions on the data that are not always correct.  For example, I found that the A3-A9 chips all identified a local training center for a retail store - as an actual retail store which it is not.  Also had that happen on corporate offices for restaurant chains, telling me a restaurant existed where it did not!  Quite frustrating sometimes.

Waze and Google have it right, so I know the information is out there, just not with the people providing these chips.  Overall, the vast majority of data is good, especially in areas that don't change much.

I know this is an older thread but I've been looking at updating my maps and found the following link:

https://lincoln.navigation.com/product/Catalog/Catalog_Lincoln_MKZ_2016/U.S.-AND-CANADA-SYNC-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-MAP-UPDATE-VERSION-A9/sku/GM5T-19H449-AC/en_US/LincolnNA/USA

A comment in the amazon reviews mentioned their card was slow.  Wonder if copying to a faster card would cure that.

I purchased mine from an ebay vendor about 6 months ago, plenty of vendors there to choose from right now about  $50-$55, some even lower

I do find that actually computing the route to be a little slower but once it is done, maps work fine
